Michigan Friday: Is Shocked

Writing and researching Michigan stories 5 days a week doesn't leave you too much room to be shocked about anything that happens.   We all know in advance if a recruit is leaning hard to Michigan or not and if a guy is injured or not.   Whenever the information is confirmed the Internet has usually beat the story by a couple days.

Yesterday was an example of the media trying to beat the story and a transfer I (and most folks) didn't see coming.    It's really hard to break stories if your name isn't Michigan grad Adam Schefter.   Yesterday was another example of that as ESPN broke the news that Nik was leaving school early and heading to the NBA Draft.   Nik quickly got on twitter and said the report was not true.   Most people believe he is leaving and just wants to do it on his terms.    ESPN stole his moment but that's what happens when you tell people things close to you and they sing like a bird.

Then this happened:

Jon Horford has decided to transfer for his final year of eligibility.  He will graduate in May and will be able to play at any program that has a graduate major that is not offered in Ann Arbor

"My time at Michigan has been the most beneficial period of my life in terms of athletic development and overall enlightenment," said Horford. "The bonds created over the last four years are everlasting, and the memories made are truly priceless. As on all journeys, new paths must be taken and intuition must be trusted. I leave Michigan with nothing but love in my heart."

Talk about shocking!  Nobody saw this coming as Jon announced about a month ago that he was coming back.   Jon has always been a different guy, if you notice in photos while other players are celebrating he seems to be just taking it in.   I don't know if it was a team chemistry issue or something else, but this decision doesn't seem to make any sense.

Here are my thoughts:

  • Does this mean McGary is coming back?
  • Even if he did there would be plenty of minutes for both.
  • Is he chasing minutes, when he is leaving a Big Ten champ with a huge need for a big?
  • He did struggle late in the year but so did Jordan Morgan
  • Does this mean Mark Donnal is the real deal and would be taking his minutes? There is only an inch difference between the two players.
  • Will the Michigan Coaches now look to add another low post player to the 2015 class?  Like they did when they grabbed Caris late.
Maybe we will never know what happened but now Michigan's low post is very much in question as we wait for McGary and GR3's decision and an update on McGary's health.

I'm thinking that Beilein has a plan to replace Horford that targets a specific player that most have never heard of. He's a recruiting machine. It may even be a European player that he's had his eye on and will use that time over seas to secure this guy. After what coach has done the past few years, I'm comfortable with whatever his plan is.
