Michigan Monday: How To Bring Down A Major College Football Program

One of the thoughts that keeps going through my mind is:  How in the hell did we get here?  I had a discussion with a friend of mine this weekend on how many teams in the Big Ten are worse then Michigan?  Indiana just beat a ranked SEC team on the road and Purdue scored two touchdowns against ND.   How the hell did we get here guys?

Let's take a look at the steps of failure:

Step 1:  As the #5 ranked team in the nation, Michigan loses to D1A Appalachian State.   Lloyd Carr tried to retire the year before and "Sailboat" Bill talks him out of it.   Lloyd knows he had a talented team and stayed one more year.  The team wasn't prepared and lost the game.

Step 2: Lloyd retires after the loss to Ohio State.  Sailboat Bill has no plan in place to replace Lloyd who he knew for at least a year was close to retirement.  If you want to point to the largest mistake made, this might be it right here.

Step 3: ESPN reports the Les Miles will be the next Michigan coach.   Instead of making the most important decision for the future of the program.  Sailboat Bill takes a long vacation in Florida and turns his cell phone off.   Another terrible decision and clearly a lack of leadership.

Step 4:  Sailboat Bill thinks he has turned "lemons into lemonade" when he hires a 'hot" coach in Rich Rodriguez from WVU.  RR had recently turned down Alabama and now is Michigan's new head coach.

Step 5:  Instead of fitting into to Michigan, RR tries to fit Michigan into his system.   That didn't work.   He is known for taking 3 star guys and making them D1 players.   That didn't work.   He wasn't ready for a job like Michigan and that was clear after his third year.

Step 6:  Sailboat Bill has already done enough damage to the program and sails away.   Michigan hires Domino's Pizza CEO David Brandon to become the next Michigan AD.   I question why a guy making millions would want to take a job making $250K but he is a former Michigan football player and might want to do the right thing.  He walks into a NCAA Infractions penalty for stretching before practice.  Michigan gets a slap on the wrist and a lot of noise really becomes not much of anything.

Step 7:  After year 3 of the RR experiment, it becomes very clear that RR is going to be fired after the Ohio State game.  Instead of firing him in November, Brandon decides that the team deserves to go to the Gator Bowl as a team.   Jim Harbaugh is considered one of the top coaches in the country and could be ready to jump at a new job.   Stanford plays great in a bowl game and Jim blows up.  Michigan gets embarrassed in it's bowl game and RR is clearly fired.   Another Michigan AD misses another window to get a high profile coach.   Jim goes to the 49'ers.

Step 8:  Brandon is not going to make the same mistake Sailboat Bill did and makes being a Michigan man a real important requirement of the job.   He hires Brady Hoke who has MAC and Mountain West experience.   Brady has a nice first year with a win over an OSU team coming off of a major NCAA investigation and a win in the Sugar Bowl.  Brandon points to winning red letter games on the schedule against the likes of OSU, MSU and ND.

Step 9: Hoke struggles after his second year, mostly due to an offensive coordinator that really doesn't understand how to leverage the skills of Denard Robinson or the next QB Devin Gardner.

Step 10:  Hoke fires his OC and brings in a highly regarded one from Alabama.   This seems like a positive move, but the concern for the running game and offensive line still remain.

Step 11:  Hoke's team gets embarrassed on national TV at Notre Dame and in a home game to Utah.  He sits here a 2-2 and his offense can't score even against fair defensive units.   Has a terrible red letter game record.

Step 12:  Hoke's seat isn't hot - its on fire.  The next move sits with Brandon if he still has a job.

This is ugly folks, there isn't anyway to sugarcoat it.   Our beloved program has hit bottom and needs strong leadership to get it back where it needs to be.   Brady Hoke is not John Beilien, and I don't believe he is the right coach to turn around this program.

You want advice on who or what to root for this season?  Root for any team playing the San Francisco 49'ers.   The only way Jim comes here is if he gets fired from the 49'ers.     At this point, I will take any coach with the last name Harbaugh, even Jack.

steve, john gruden makes $4 million a year in a super low stress job compared to college coaching. he is never coming back to college or NFL as a head coach. and i wouldn't either if i was him

As much as I like to think that Devin is one of RR's guys and that is the reason for the issues...trying to fit a dual qb into a pro offense. I look at OSU and they seem to do just fine. I just have NO clue why we are doing so poorly. I really like Hoke, but probably more of a recruiting coordinator vs a head coach. I think the d could really dominate, but when you can't score any points, it just deflates everyone. If we figure out how to score, I think the d will play off of that and dominate. They are not going to lose me as a fan....I just hope things improve sooner than later.

I can't get the bad taste out of my mouth. This is tough to shake. I think that we actually match up extremely well vs Minnesota this week. Example, they cannot pass the ball at all and our run D is solid. But somehow I can't even write a "W" down next to that game on the schedule right now. Disappointing.....

I like Hoke and I hate seeing good guys finishing last. I really hope that they figure out a way to right the ship because if we bring in someone new, then it'll set the program back a few years again because kids will start leaving, etc....

I don't have the answer, and "keeping the faith" isn't working out too well right now. I think it's time to go with Morris and look toward next year. The game just moves too fast for Devin...

GREAT Michigan Monday by the BHB!

How to save Hoke:

Hoke is a nice guy, is good at recruiting, and represents M's culture well.

- He can't be allowed to make any game decisions, and must stay off of the fricken football field...wtf

- The O-coordinator must make all clock mgmt. decisions and coordinate with the special teams coach and D-coordinator

- Mattison much be in charge of all major game decisions / orchestration where over-all coordination is required.

- Someone other that Hoke / possibly a combination of Mattison Nusmeier must be in charge of all assistant hiring / firing - Hoke has no balls in this area and doesn't understand anything resembling anything beyond basic high school football coaching so is incapable of making these decisions - I watch Clarkston high fb, the coaching across the board is far superior than what I see at the M games!!!

- Ferringo must be fired!!! The special teams are serviceable, but not "special" - ten man punt coverage only two on the returner.... - wtf....not being able to pooch punt, get inside the 15, etc etc...wtf, wtf, wtf

- Funk must be fired so obvious - wtf!!!

- Wellman must go - Need someone to make them tough and motivated - It's hard to watch the O-line not be able to push inferior D-lineman

- THIS ALL NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW!!! Save the season, save the recruits!

- Need someone on the sidelines to get in players face - not clap and pat their butts!

I'm all for keeping Hoke, said the above.....Nice guy, represents the program well, good recruiter, good for the culture....Establishes a good comfortable family atmosphere for the kids and their families.

Hoke seems like a very good person and a guy you want your son playing for, the problem is he is WAY over his head leading this program and his coaching ideas (going slow and running the ball too much) doesn't fit todays game. Jim H took Stanford from one of the worst teams in D1 to a top 10 program that is still there. His act is starting to wear out in the NFL, I just hope this is perfect timing situation. Because I think that is the only way Brandon will make the right decision.

Yes, Bob :-(.....Your right, no way to save Hoke we need a coach- sure hope that we can get Harbough...Probably should can Hoke now and put in Mattison as an interim in that case instead of keeping all wondering, and perhaps that could work for an extra year while getting the "right" guy....Sure don't want another of those "2:30 am decisions"....always fun short term, but long term, once that light shines, yuk, and those darn doctor's visits!

Hell Cam Cameron would be worth a shot.
We used to have a consecutive sell-out streak, now its been reduced to a 'consecutive games with over 100,000 in the stands'. If things don't change it'll be consecutive games where the stadium parking lot is full..

-Harbaugh has a better overall background. Miles has a better collegiate record and that is what matter most to me. He has maintained a high level of play in the toughest division in the FBS with more hardware to show for it.

-Both are high profile coaches that can get players from anywhere, but Miles has deep roots in the South while Harbaugh has roots on the West Coast, especially California. I think it is a bigger deal to get a pipeline from the South than California.

-This would be Miles last job and he'd spend 6-8 years at UM, while I fully expect Harbaugh to leave within 5-6 years to give the NFL another shot if he came here and had the success we are expecting.

I just think there are better odds for Miles to come to Ann Arbor than Harbaugh. I am 90% positive Miles would say yes. I think there is a 50% chance at best Harbaugh says yes. If SF doesn't offer him a deal or fires him, either NY team, Miami, or the other Bay Area team (at least for now), the Raiders, are all realistic spots for him.

For the top two candidates, Miles and Harbaugh, I am leaning towards Miles.
