Michigan Tuesday: Coach Speak Doesn't Sound Good For Peppers

Hoke was asked about Peppers yesterday, his response:  “No, but I’m getting closer to seeing where he is. I mean, he’s getting better but he’s not where he needs to be, and so that’s a very good question. I’ll probably have something soon.”

Reading between the lines and hopefully Hoke is being honest, Jabrill seems to be heading for a redshirt.   Not sure it would make much sense for him to play in the last 3 (or 4 with a bowl game).

Speaking of Bowl Games, Michigan is a 2 point favorite on Saturday against NW and will probably be a favorite against Maryland.   They will probably be a two touchdown dog at OSU.

I mentioned two wins equal Gator Bowl, well the Big Ten is not part of the bowl any longer and Michigan will not be heading to Florida if they win 6 games.

Quick Lane Bowl:  Really?  This is the game at Ford Field.   Is it possible to decline a bowl game?  This would be completely embarrassing.  The only positive would be the 14 practice days.

Heart of Dallas:  Played at the Cotton Bowl.  Played on January 1st against a Conference USA team. This is like when Michigan played in the Blue Bonnet Bowl in 1981.

Pinstripe Bowl:  What to get some sun for the bowl game, not if Michigan goes here?  Maybe Christmas in NYC?  Michigan would play an ACC team on 12/27.

Music City:  Another ACC match-up. 12/30 in Nashville.

San Francisco Bowl:  At the 49'ers new stadium.  Interesting side story with this bowl game?

Holiday Bowl: Usually a fun bowl game in San Diego.   Maybe Hoke could drop his resume off at the home stadium of where he used to coach.

No Florida unless they upset Ohio State and the Outback picks them up.    None of bowls above, allow Hoke to keep his job and the game will probably be coached by Greg Mattison or Doug Nussmeier.

  • Reports are that Michigan has contacted CMU AD Dave Heeke and Dartmouth AD Harry Sheehy.  There seems to be a very wide net right now.

Yes, possible to decline bowl game. I believe Notre Dame declined in Weiss' last year with transition to Kelly.

Do you think Michigan will decline to give new coach more time to recruit?

Why give Hoke another month and get further behind in recruiting and coach search.

If Hoke will get fired, which I am assuming will happen, why not cut ties 5 minutes after OSU game and start process for new regime?

Thoughts?

Thanks for your questions Jim. My question on declining the bowl game is more a Big 10 question. I have a feeling you can't decline in the Big 10 due to revenue sharing. Yes, Hoke should be fired right after OSU, probably the Monday after. The delay could be with the new AD. If the new AD is not in place it could take longer. Jim H will probably won't get fired until early January anyway.

They certainly won't (and can't) decline a bowl game. This is a VERY young team. The extra practices alone are worth it.

Also, none of the coaches we would want will be available in November, so it makes no sense to do that. Hoke will continue to sell the university and the tradition and the youth as reasons to come here regardless of who is the head coach.

Lastly, with the AD situation unsettled there's no way that they hire a coach.

I like the idea of firing Hoke (thought it should have been done long long ago) and appointing Mattison or Nussmeier interim, getting the extra practices, and seeing what one of those interim's can do as head coach. My belief is that Nussmeier and Mattison aren't the problems..The real problems are mainly; 1.) the bottom of the Barrel assistants that Hoke brought from SDSU (Ferringo, Wellman, Funk, etc. They only got rid of one...uhhhggg) 2.) The antique RB coach. 3.) Hoke's total inability to manage game, clock, strategy, adjustments, decisions, orchestrate disciplines, etc.

I keep saying the same thing in different ways.....hmmmmm - wtf, why hasn't anything been done. It's insane that Nussmeier was set up for failure. Didn't both Bo and Lloyd change / replace assistants pretty regularly to try to get the best? Perhaps Hoke just wanted to keep people dumber than him around?

First things first. They have to win 2 games and given that they are 0-3 on the road and Maryland is doing better, I put them at 40/60 to do that. Being able to have those extra practices would be huge for us though.

I can't remember the specifics of the OSU situation where Meyer was able to recruit right away while the interim did the bowl prep, but that situation was so ideal it seemed almost unfair. With NFL and high end NCAA coaches likely not available until after the new year, we need a new good AD asap.

NC wolverine is correct, We need a new AD as soon as possible. No use for fans to even discussing coaching changes until the AD piece is firmed up.

I also do not see how we help out the players by firing Hoke now and appointing Mattison or Nuss as interim HC.
