Michigan Friday: Coaching Search Miss Direction Plays

Florida seemed to have got their guy in Jim McElwain and figured out a way to get past the $7.5 M buyout.   There were rumors about guys like Jim Tressel and former Wisconsin and current Arkansas coach Bret Bielema at Nebraska.  They went way off the board and hired Oregon State coach Mike Riley.

I thought Michigan would be competing for candidates with Florida and maybe even Nebraska when they fired Bo on Sunday.   Boy was I wrong,   Jim McElwain might have been an outside candidate for Michigan, but would never had been seriously considered with that huge buyout.   Mike Riley is considered a good coach but I don't think he was on anyone's hot coach list.

So where does this leave Michigan?  With a ton of information floating out there.

ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd must of needed some love from Michigan blogs as he said on the radio he talks to a few agents and has heard a name that the Michigan faithful will like (that is not currently being discussed on message boards) and it will become clear this weekend.   He didn't want to burn his source, so he won't tell us who it is.   He said something similar that UConn was headed to the Big 10 a few years ago.    I don't give this much credibility, but my guess would be David Shaw or Georgia's Mark Richt.  Which probably means that their agents are looking for a raise for their clients.

Also heard on ESPN radio on Thursday, is that Brian Griese is "close" to the coaching search and would not give his opinion on who he would like to see at Michigan.   Brian talked a lot about Jim Hackett and how he can handle this search even as an interim AD.   So it seems Brian is being asked to participate or give his opinions to Hackett on candidates.   I consider this a good move.   I would imagine that Desmond is also in the circle of trust.

Another person has been asked his opinion and said, he believes Jimmy is the right candidate is Lloyd Carr.   Lloyd says he is not involved in the search but was asked his opinion and said Jimmy is the right man for the job.   He also likes Baylor coach Art Briles.   As you know, Lloyd hasn't had the best relationship with Jimmy or Les the last 10 years or so.   My guess is that some fences have been mended with Jimmy probably not Les.

Until Jimmy publically says "I not going to coach Michigan"  He is the one and only candidate.

On a side note, there has been some "noise" around UCLA's Jim Mora.  Jim tuned town Texas and UW last year because he said his family wants to stay in California.   He doesn't make a ton of money and his team under preformed this year.   Not sure why now he would be available.  Mike Debord who works on Hackett's staff, coached with Mora at the Seahawks.   I don't know about you but it seems there are a ton of Jim's in this process!

The longer this goes on, the better it is for landing the "coaching grand slam".    Jim Hackett told the players there would be a new coach in place when they got home from winter break or January 4th.

Hackett made it quite clear that there would be no 'cutting corners' and things would be done right, with no shenanigans..

Les hasn't had the cleanest recruits in football, in fact he's kept a few felons in the program. Reading between the lines, does that send a message that NO, Les will not be offered the job?

Personally, Les, Cam and Bo would be a pretty hard to beat coaching staff...

I agree Scott.

This will be a crazy ride and tons of Internet chatter.

We sure hear it all, from Big Game Bob to Schiano back to Les then Jimmy etc etc etc.

Would love to know what Hackett is thinking.

Marcus Ray confirmed Hackett had a conference call with many former players on the coaching search.

He said to expect a search that takes weeks, not days. So were just starting...

Bob, thats got Harbaugh written all over it. Why else would it take Hackett "weeks" to make a hire? He is making a strong run at him.

That "January 4th" timeline he quoted to the players leaves the door as wide open as possible to give Jimmy the time to finish his season and also make the decision.

How does that impact recruiting? 5 weeks to nail down the rest of the class would be tough. Then again, if Jimmy H is the Head Coach it probably won't be that tough. LOL

No matter what I'm liking the names I'm hearing.....
Harbaugh
Richt
Miles
Mora
Stoops
Shanahan

All guys that I can live with.

I think the absolute worst we could end up with would be a guy like Greg Shiano or Kyle Whittingham which I could deal with because both of those guy are truly good coaches and know their shit. The one guy that I don't want would be Dan Mullen. He doesn't impress me at all.

Appreciate all the info... without it; the whole process would be much more nerve-racking...some information is better than none, and a lot better then being in the dark until it happens.

Anyone else get the feeling that Hackett will be around for a long time?

Ya I do,especially if he lands Harbaugh.

I just wish that Lloyd would shut the f&%! up and not interfere. He ruined the last 7 years of M football with his interference (assuming John U Bacon's take is correct in "3 and out". He brought us some decent years of football....Now, just go golf or fish, or find a willing cheerleader..."you're not Bo!).

Well said M go Clean.

How come Ohio can have 3 guys that can play QB and we can't even find one?

M go Clean said...

Hey BigHurt...Thanks! That is quite a mystery why their QB's are so good.....I'd normally say it's because OSU has a QB coach, but they don't either. So, is Tom Herman that good? I wonder what their practices look like? Or, perhaps it's talent evaluation....definitely warrants some research! Michigan seems to favor local heros, perhaps Michigan HS football players are over rated?

Player development, game planning and play calling, that's the difference.

Schiano is being called a 'serious candidate' by some outlets. R U kidding me? Didn't our last coach come with a .500 HC record?
The new coach HAS to be a proven winner. We can't try another 'good guy' who might make a great coach.

All the Shiano buzz is likely coming from Shiano's agents, which are pushing their client hard for this job. No thanks. If Shiano is hirted I am officially walking away from this cluster f**k.
