Michigan Friday: Coaching Search Status Report

Brady Hoke was fired on: 12/2
Time of Search: 10 Days
Outstanding Offers:  1

Florida, Nebraska, Oregon State, and Wisconsin didn't take anytime finding their next head coach.  Wisconsin did a search and hire in all of about 30 minutes.  (If you haven't heard they are hiring former Wisconsin assistant Paul Chyrst).   Pitt will now have to fill their head coaching spot.

With these major programs filling their openings fast with what I would call all Plan B choices (outside of OSU hire of Gary Anderson), Michigan continues to wait in the weeds.   The media is taking a couple of stances:

Bad

  • Michigan is a mess and has no idea what they are doing.
  • These other jobs are better jobs
  • Since Jimmy isn't coming they continue to work their plan B for guys wanting the job
  • Nobody wants to work for an interim AD
  • I heard a dork on Sports Radio say that when the search firm contact agents, they are actually offering these guys the job and all the coaches are say no.
Good
  • Michigan is smart to wait because the NFL is going to clean house in a couple of weeks and there will be a ton of guys available.
Now lets be smart/realistic which sometimes the mainstream media forgets to do.   The one and only risk Michigan has in waiting to find the right guy is recruiting the 2015 class.

#1:  Michigan has a very small 2015 class
#2: The recruiting holiday dead period starts on Monday and lasts until after New Years Day.

Not much of a risk.  I don't know how much recruiting Chyrst and Anderson are going to be able to accomplish at their schools in the next two days.  I'm guessing finding a place to live and filling in your staff might be the top priorities.

Don't let the search firm contacting coaches concern you.   It's their job to get a pool of available coaches and it's their agents job to leak it to the media so they can get their clients a raise.   I'm pretty confident is saying that Butch Jones hasn't done anything at Tennessee to deserve his latest extension. They just didn't want to be Kifffin'ed again.

Targets

I believe reports that Jimmy has a Michigan offer on the table.  I also believe Jimmy only has focus for his current team.   It's one of the reasons that makes him a very good coach.   The only folks that believe Michigan even has a chance is Michigan insiders.

Everyone else is Plan B:

1. Les Miles - There is still too much "hate" in the athletic department to hire Les.   Here is what I tell those folks, get the hell out then.  Les is Les and we all know who Les is.  Michigan needs an impact coach and Les will take the job and bring a ton of high profile coordinators with him.   I don't care who doesn't like Les, their job can't be as nearly important as the head coach.   Find another line of work.  Michigan is where it is right now, because you dorks didn't want him hired when Lloyd retired and then again when RR got fired.   Enough is enough.

2. Dan Mullen - I'm not buying he is not available.  Michigan would be able to get him with out too much work.   I think they could of had him last week.

Guys I believe to be off the table:  Bob Stoops, Sean Payton and Jim Mora.   I also don't think Michigan will go the coordinator route unless, they get stop signs from all their head coach targets.

The only head coaching hire that made sense this year is Paul Chyst.  Gary Anderson left a top 4 job in the Big Ten to lead one of the worst teams in the PAC 12.   The other hires were clearly quick fills.

If Jimmy says no, then Michigan has to hire Les Miles.

I like Dan Mullen and think he would be a good hire, but there are really two candidates in my mind.

Timing

It's obvious that Michigan is targeting Jimmy and the Wolverines don't have an answer.   Michigan is willing to wait two more weeks but should have a good idea if the 49'ers lose in Seattle this weekend.    I would hope Jimmy wouldn't keep Michigan on the line as he considers if he wants to work for a Davis in Oakland or not.

With the silent period, there is no rush if we need to wait for Jimmy.  If Jimmy isn't coming, I would expect a new coach in role quickly.

I hope if Harbaugh is the next coach its because he is driven to 'come home' and turn the ship around. If he comes because he loves Michigan and can't stand to see the program fallen to the lows it has fallen to, GREAT! If he comes because there isn't a better offer on the board, I hope his Heir Apparent is named and in place ASAP.... Because the first NFL offer that suits his fancy will have him leaving the program in another coaching search.

The more turnover and instability the worse the coaching searches get.

I must have had my head in the sand some over the last 15 years.

What did Miles do that was so horrible many Michigan faithful do not want him and (bigger question) how can those people stop the AD from hiring a top 5 coach?

I want Harbaugh as much as the next guy, but if not Harbaugh I would want Miles. I don't understand how Carr or anyone would have enough clout to stop that.

If Meyer wanted to go back to FL or if Saban wanted to go..well..anywhere it would happen. How can a few ego's stop Michigan from hiring a proven and successful coach? What am I missing?

jim w. ok here it is.miles had an affair with carr's wife so if miles is ever hired to coach football then that would mean carr would have to cheer for THAT guy! could you do it? it would take the ultimate forgiveness on lloyds part and I don't know if he couldever be in that place. I would have a hard time with if it was me. Mich football is carrs life. I don't see it happening for miles even though he is my # 2 as well.

steve said...

i want miles too but if it splits ann arbor right down the middle AGAIN i say H no!it could be another RR trainwreck so the question becomes is it worth the risk? if you support carr then you don't support miles and therein lies the issue. make sense now? if you haven;t read the book three and out by john u bacon. you should

let me understand this.... Les allegedly screwed Lloyd's wife... and Lloyd is so pissed that he spent the last 7 years screwing the football program at Michigan. NICE.....

If this is really the case, time to move on... However, if it isn't, time to move on....

At some point, Michigan needs to hire the best coach available.... the last two times they tried another approach, both times failed miserably.... Lloyd can screw both my ex wives as many times as he likes, if that helps!

Lets hire the best guy available, regardless of who it is. Being in the cellar of the Big 10 is getting friggin' OLD!

I thought I heard Miles banged Moellers wife. Not Carr's wife. And Carr is loyal to Moeller as Bo-Bretheren. The rumor on this comes fulkl circuile when Moeller got dri=unk in the SOuthfield resturant that lead to his resignation. The jight w=he was drunk in public and made a fool of himself was the night he found out Miles banged his wife.

Rob said...

Regardless, Miles is out because he banged someone's wife.

Steve...thanks for the info. I appreciate the insight.

That is tough for Lloyd, but as Scott K. said, at some point Michigan needs to what is best for Michigan.

That was years ago. I ache for Lloyd but he should not hold the football team hostage.

Does it make him, Carr, feel better to watch our team get destroyed week after week while Miles is winning? What sense does that make?

Scott K said...

Regardless of whether it was Mo's wife or Carr's.... IF IT EVEN HAPPENED. aren't they still married? She had to be 50% or more responsible.

This is Michigan Football not the young and the restless for the love of God!!!

scott k- your right. IF IT HAPPENED? if your a true blue michign fan you really need to read the book. it will explain alot although painful to .I trust john bacon and i have spoken with him several times BEFORE Brandon banned him from the tunnel and field. He lost all access to any part of the stadium except the tiny spot high in the media press box for it. I am employed here so i see alot that never gets outside the walls. trust me when i say this. miles will probably never work here as long as carr is alive. imho. i wish it was different because i do not actually believe we will get harbaugh. hope i'm wrong. we are waiting on him at this point and have done everything he has asked.

I don't care if dumb ass Miles screwed all the cheerleaders, he has a recruiting hot bed at LSU, gets top talent and does very little with them. He does not develop quarterbacks, has really poor clock management, makes really stupid game day decisions and often has " clown" shows for press conferences. He is 61 and past his prime. If we hire him we will be 8-4, 9-3 most years with no big ten titles. He is not the guy to take on Meyer and win. It won't happen. If you want the bar to be 2nd place in the division year after year then hire him. He has about 4 years before he packs it in , will continue to divide the program and other than playing in some bigger bowls, will have nothing else to show for it. There is a reason Miles has not come back to Michigan. This hire would be symbolic of how desperate we have become.

Miles averages 10 wins a season in the SEC, u clearly don't pay much attention to college football. Isn't the kid playing QB for the Titan's a LSU qb?

Les and LSU are a contender in the SEC every season, but he isn't good enough to compete in the Big 10? Really? That's crazy talk.

Squashman said...

I have followed LSU football since he took over. He is a dumb ass. His teams under perform. He gets out coached by the elite coaches in the SEC. He is stale. Perfect for Michigan if they want to stay in the 19 th century. His teams are loaded with talent. He should be competing for National championships. He won one with Sabin's guys. His record is average when looking at the talent he has on the field.

When I wake up in the morning and I turn that film on, it's like reading a book and it's exciting. I don't read books, but if I read books it would be like reading a book." During a weekly press luncheon address.

Les miles----

Scott K said...

LSU has the best defense in the SEC, top ten in the nation. Award for top offensive lineman was just given to a Sr from LSU. Clearly they are developing talent. Wouldn't it b nice I'd we developed O linemen again?
Les is 3-3 vs Meyer.... The losses were close games, the wins were not.

Squashman said...

No question he is loaded with talent. Want this buffoon representing the university of Michigan? LSU fans would be esc attic if he left. There is a good reason for that.

2. "My point to you is, there is no such thing as a flop that takes the field for our football team. Just so ya know, I'm proud of those men. How ****ing easy would it have been to say it's their night. Excuse my language. Spectacular group of men. You got to find them, you throw your arms around them and give them a big kiss on the mouth, if you're a girl." Reacting to column on Russell Shepard as a flop after Ole Miss 2012.

Well Lloyd's not clean.....He banged Drew Henson's wife or sister or someone......Only plausible explanation for why he started Henson over the best QB in the history of football for so long..had to be some sort of blackmail!

Scott K said...

I'll take Les and 10 win seasons any day..... Or we can get ron English or Greg schiano and continue to be the laughing stock of the country, bottom half of the big ten.
Clearly u hate Miles. His statistics cannot be argued.. He is the winningest coach in the SEC over the psdt ten years....
Love or hate the SEC, over that time its been one of, if not the, toughest conf.

Truth of the matter is, we have politics at Michigan the same way we have politics in every segment of our society, including churches, synagogues, the Vatican, the Scouts, families and so forth. It can stop the best people from getting or keeping a job that they'd excel in. Whether it's Les Miles coming to Michigan or Jim Harbaugh choosing Michigan or some other job, it appears that the decision to fill this position will have some sort of political spin to it.

In other words, the collective "WE" want the best coach, but whether or not "we" get the "best" coach will have some form of political wrangling to it, most of which we can't see or will ever know about.

Right now, Hackett has a process and we as fans have to trust the process. We hope that it will be sooner than later for Michigan. We also can infer that whoever the coach is, they will need to hire a staff, which will have to relocate as well as recruit and sign players in what could be less than a month's time. Even though Michigan will have a small class the new coaching staff will have to determine if these players fit what they want to do, and they will still need to secure the ones that they want. Hopefully, this will not be another throw away class.

I thank "Steve" [December 13, 2014 at 3:16 AM] for his comment on Harbaugh and the insight that he's given to the rest of us who aren't insiders there when he said, "...we are waiting on him at this point and have done everything he has asked." That tells us that the firm has identified Harbaugh as "the" candidate of choice. It also says at least two other things, one, Michigan has (up till now) met his demands, which would at the very least include a financial package that would likely involve a buy out if demanded by the 49ers and two, Harbaugh is waiting for the best time to give his answer to Michigan (and or publically). ). I would also imagine that there is some sort of deadline that Michigan has imposed upon Harbaugh that he has agreed to. That tells me that even though he is seriously in negotiations with Michigan that he hasn’t quite committed to Michigan just yet.

I don't know what's Harbaugh's legal options here are; can he just quit and go to a college team with one year left on his contract, or does Michigan have to buy it out? Does he have to be fired first, and if it is possible for NFL teams to actually trade coaches just like players is a legal question. I would assume that the players union covers the players but what (if anything) does the agreement say about coaches under contract? As far as I can tell, this has never been done before, and therefore, if the owners have talked about it, I’m sure they’ve discussed it with their attorneys. We may be treading new legal waters hear, similar to the Curt Flood trade on October 7, 1969, when Flood challenged baseballs’ reserve clause. This isn’t the reserve clause but the spirit of the question.

My point is simply, I think it maybe more to it than a simple yes or no for Jimmy. However, if he doesn't come to Michigan this time and he actually can come, then I don't think he ever really wanted to come in the first place. However, this may be something that we may never really know for sure because of the politics of it all. IMHO!!!
(Sorry for the length)

I am not sold on Harbaugh. He's a great coach, he can win, he can turn Michigan around, and he would immediately get damtonio and Meyer's attention, no doubt..... But I think Jim thinks he's bigger than Michigan football. I doubt Michigan's HC is his 1st choice. I think Miles is the best hire Hackett could make. Mullen is probably a fair third option. Outside those 3, some of the names being circulated concern me. Schiano? Really? Mora, Gruden, Fundy, Adazzio? I hope those are nothing more than writers reaching for a story..... shit, I'd take Pelini over any of those clowns.

Steve said...

Why do people keep talking about Gruden? He was ok as a coach but not the end all be all candidate. I'm notr following the logic here.
