Michigan Thursday: Being Jimmy H

sporting news
Walk in Jimmy's shoes for a few minutes.  He currently has a high profile NFL job which pretty much everyone agrees he won't be back at in about a month.   There are reports Jimmy and the 49'ers GM had some type of incident a few weeks ago that continues to kill the relationship.   Now his alma mater has a very high profile opening that they are willing to break the bank to get him to come home.

Recent reports that could be true or not true:

  • Hackett is pulling out all the stops to bring Jimmy to Ann Arbor, including a report of a salary north of Saban's.
  • Hackett understands Michigan has a clear advantage being able to "sell" him on coming back to Ann Arbor when other NFL teams can't approach him.
  • NFL insiders are saying, Jimmy is going to stay in the NFL because coaches don't go back to college unless they have no other options.  IE: Pete Carroll.
  • Former players are telling Michigan insiders that he is genuinely interested in Michigan.
  • Sam Webb who was the first to break the news on Hoke being fired.  Is now saying, two of his sources close to Jimmy is saying he probably will stay in the NFL.
  • Vegas odds are that Jimmy goes to A2
  • Michigan's private plane can't be tracked via the internet anymore (this was an issue when Brandon was flying all over the place when he was hiring Hoke)

Jim is known to beat to his own drummer and be a bit flakey.   I think it's pretty close to a fact that his wife doesn't want to move.  Which leaves what the Raiders job?

Jim is torn between his childhood home, his wife, his college, his mentor Bo, and unfinished business in the NFL.  If Bo was alive today, I think Jim would already be Michigan's coach.

So the reports of him not coming and reports that he could come maybe exactly how he is thinking day by day.   I'm sure he tells his former Michigan teammates that he is considering it, because that is what they want to hear and I'm sure he is telling his NFL sources just the opposite.

Here is how I think about this:

If the wife wins:  he stays and takes one of the worst jobs in professional sports with the Raiders.  I understand Happy Wife = Happy Life, but the Raiders job is about as a dead end gig you can get.

If his style of coaching wins:  He has to go back to college, because his coaching style is much more geared towards the college game.  He also knows he pretty much will run the program and could coach there as long as he wants.

If he wants to stay in the NFL and agrees to a trade:  he could be going anywhere from the Raiders, to the Jets, Giants or other teams that could be in play as well.    Would mostly likely still have to move, style could be toxic, and will need to win quick.

He is going to get paid either way and Michigan will need an "on the record" or "off the record" decision soon.

Get some popcorn, this is going to be a wild ride.   He could change his mind daily or even hourly.

I think the Florida HC hire announced today is very telling on the limited nature of available high-profile, killer head coaching candidates this off season. Florida tested the waters on many of the coaching candidates that Umich would also consider, and those coaches all said “thanks, but no thanks.” Guys like Butch Jones, Gary Patterson, David Shaw, Bret Beilema = no, no, no, no... Dan Mullen was likely not on Florida’s list because he and Florida kind of have the same complicated dynamic as Les Miles has with the Michigan administration. I highly doubt Jim Harbaugh moves his family to Michigan for a college job. He is an NFL guy. I like everybody’s spirit and your hopes and dreams are tempting, but my brain tells me NO, even though my heart keeps telling me YES. So assuming I am correct on Jim, if we wiff on Dan Mullen, I predict we end up with either Shiano or a up-comer coordinator. Folks, just prepare yourselves for the disappointment of no dockers walking our sideline next season.

It was extremely important for Florida to move fast. The state of Florida (obviously) is a hot bed for recruiting. Taking a while to find a coach would be more detrimental to the Gators than most situations.

I think it's pretty much for sure going to be Jimmy H or Miles. I don't think there's any other scenario here.....

In respect to Miles, what other coach do you know that tweets about the Wolverines? LOL He's come for next to free! LOL

Big Game Bob... averaged 10-3 record for 16 years in the Big 12, averaged a conference championship every other year.

would he leave OK? He started out as a Big 10 guy at Iowa?

Rumors are swirling.

Well.....at least we can't blow it any worse than Nebraska did....LOL They get rid of the guy who won 9 games for the coach who won 5 games and never really had any notable success at any stop in his career for any length of time.

Bob, what candidates with Michigan ties that fit what Cowherd describes as a "Oh, that's a great candidate, I never thought of that one!"

I think Les Miles is perfect, I agree with Bob, he wants the job, and Cam Cameron can be the succession plan.

Please don't hire les miles unless you are happy going 8-4 year after year. He can't out coach Meyer. Or . Dantanio .
