Michigan Thursday: You Maybe Right, I Maybe Crazy

Photo
Someone wake up Gil Brandt, Michigan has made a job offer.

The position battle between NFL Insiders and Michigan Insiders took a positive turn towards the Michigan insiders yesterday.   Just to recap, here are their stances:

NFL Insiders:  Jimmy is staying in the league and has zero interest in Michigan.   Has already told the Maize and Blue to pound sand.

Michigan Insiders:  Jimmy is very much in play and is seriously considering coming back to Ann Arbor.  He eventually might not end up at Michigan but he will seriously consider rebuilding his Alma Mater.

Last night it was made public that Michigan made a 6 year $48M or $49M offer to Jimmy.   This has played out exactly how the Michigan Insiders said it would.   They have targeted one guy from the beginning, the search firm has been working the Plan B list.  As soon as the 49'ers were out of the playoffs, the negotiation between Michigan and Jimmy would begin.  No promises but Michigan would take their best shot and it certainly has.   No Sailboats, No Brandon ego, just a smart strategy to get the guy you want.   Well Done, Hackett.  If Jimmy stays in the NFL now, it will because that is where he feels the most comfortable, not because Michigan didn't give it's best effort to land him.   I'm very proud how Michigan has handled this situation with everyone and their brother saying they were crazy for waiting or even trying.

I would say the Michigan Insiders have already won that battle, now it will be interesting to see who wins the War.

A question you might be wondering is: Who is Plan B if The Bears offer Jimmy the head coaching and GM job for $15M a year?

Your guess is as good as mine.  I'm still very confident that Les would take the job if Hackett put a contract in front of him.   His removal from the process on Monday was a clear sign that Jimmy got offered and for recruiting purposes.   This is still Les dream job and would probably take a pay cut to take it.   I'm just don't know if the "haters" in the athletic department would ever let him be hired.

The question on my mind is, how long is this Michigan offer valid?  Hackett will not want to compete with NFL teams, so I'm guessing he will need at least a private decision before the end of the NFL season which is a week 1/2 away.

This is going to be a long 10 days.

  • Michigan removed one of the last Brandon crazy hires when AD CMO Hunter Lochman resigned yesterday.  Athletic Departments don't need a CMO and Hunter didn't seem like he was doing a very good job with two cokes for ticket, etc.

Neither Miles or Mullen would get offered a contract anywhere close to what Harbaugh has allegedly been offered... BUT, I assure you both their ears perked up last night when details began to leak and $8 or $8.17 million a year hit the street.

My guess is, if Jim doesn't come back home, Mullen will get the biggest pay raise of his life.

I am probably looking at this with maize colored glasses, but outside of his first year at SF he has not done anything special in NFL.

As Bob has stated over and over his strengths seem to fit better in college than NFL.

Would it be a good move for Chicago to offer him GM and coach? Or even the head coach at $8 million?

Two things that need to be done to cement the offer:

- Promise him a statue next to Bo with strings attached (Big Ten Championship).

- Send Lloyd on a sailboat trip - He hired Loeffler over Harbaugh as QB coach in 2002 (His ego wouldn't allow anyone like Harbaugh to be around), not that loeffler didn't work out pretty well.

More on Lloyd; http://gregghenson.typepad.com/gregg_hensoncom/2011/01/nobody-knows-anything-about-harbaugh-and-his-next-move.html

Jim W. Jim took SF to three straight NFC Championships...

Harbaugh is competitive and no doubt wants to win Super Bowls. He is also a smart guy...... Three consecutive trips to the NFC Championship game, one bad season and he's on the chopping block... That's the NFL Jimmy.... ( Not For Long)

The NFL writers keep spewing all the 'why go back to college and deal with recruiting, ncaa compliance, etc'...
I would be Jim enjoys recruiting young athletes much more than battling overpaid, under achieving professional players. Compliance? This is Harbaugh, not tressel, meyer, sabin, bowden... If u aren't trying to skirt the rules, i doubt they're a lot of trouble.

I'm sayin'.

Good call Scott. I always appreciate your feedback. I guess I am trying to find reasons for Jim to choose AA over Windy City.

The funny thing is, this article makes the case for Jim to come to Michigan... although I don't think that was his intention.

Like all of u I'm a huge Michigan honk....was in a great mood cause everybody had Michigan on the brain....but this afternoon I've heard the same thing from all the "insiders"...2011 Michigan offered Jimmy more money but used the Michigan offer to get more from 49ers....every insider I've listen to today all say the same thing I thought yesterday...Jimmy and his agent using Michigan to get more from NFL teams....I can't say that's a bad play from Jim and his agent...it's the business thing to do...but I remmember mike Ditka talking about Jimmy onhow money didn't matter....

Justvwatched Jim's presser live. If you ate Michigan with an epic unanswered offer on the table it went as good as you could hope for. He refused to comment on the offer, Michigan, or even give them any sound bites about how much Michigan might mean to him. He gave the 49er media NOTHING.

This whole story has taken such a life of its own at this point, its hard to know what are actual "leaked facts" and what is speculation and conjuncture.
IF there has been an offer made, and Jim is letting this go on the way it has, without giving Michigan a straight "Yes, I'll come but not until the season is over" or a "no, i'm not coming" he's got to be the world's biggest douche.
I realize

Agree with Scott K. For this to make any freakin sense there has to be a whole lot going on behind the scenes that we do not know about. Otherwise either (a) Michigan and Hackett are dumb asses; or (b) Jimmy is an evil mad man. I refuse to believe either one of those scenarios is the case unless I have uncontroverted facts to the contrary. Aside from some additional tweaking, this deal is in the books. It has to be.
