Big Commit Weekend!

Update: Michigan got it's third commitment of the weekend today, as OL and UConn commit Nolan Ulizio has flipped to the Wolverines

Michigan landed two commits on Saturday:

  • 4 star and #4 rated Pro Style QB in the country and #105 player overall (Rivals) in Zach Gentry.   Zach was a long time Texas commit and Jimmy worked his magic by visiting him on Wednesday, getting him to visit this weekend and Zach committing during half time of the Michigan basketball game.   Zach had turned down the likes of Alabama, TCU, Nebraska, Tennessee, OK State, Louisville and others.  Zach is 6'6 and 230 pounds and is Michigan's 2nd QB in this class, Alex Malzone is already enrolled.

  • Did I mention Nebraska?  Michigan flipped former Nebraska commit and 3 star DE Ruben Jones from Florida on Saturday as well.  Ruben is 6'4 and 225 pounds which is small for DE (he is smaller then the QB commit on Saturday!).  He will be a speed guy WDE in DJ's defense and maybe even a OLB.   He is also ticketed it for a redshirt as he needs a year in the weight room and training table.
I love both of these commits, the Michigan defense need speed guys and that is exactly what Ruben is.   Jimmy also wanted more competition at the QB position and now he has two 4 star QB's coming in.

BTW: Chris Clark is at UCLA this weekend, who some insiders feel might have a slight lead over the Wolverines right now.   Having two big gun slingers in this class now has to be a positive in his recruitment.  While that push the pendulum towards the Wolverines?  We will find out on signing day.

If Michigan is really only going to take 12 players in this class only 4 spots 3 spots remain in the next week and a half.

Gentry's ratings fluctuate a great deal depending on the service:

ESPN: 4-star, 83 grade, #9 pocket quarterback, #118 overall

Rivals: 4-star, #4 pro-style quarterback, #105 overall

Scout: 4-star, #19 quarterback, #278 overall

247 Sports: 3-star, 88 grade, #16 pro-style quarterback

Some are saying that there will be up to 17 in this class. There may be some attrition that is not yet known.

I have heard the coaches are telling the recruits there are 12 spots in this class. One thing I just thought about is: Does that count the two guys that enrolled early? Those scholarships can be used with any extra ones from the past season.

I think the coaches would find room for the Marshalls, Clarks and Weber's of the world.

2 3 stars and a 4 star. Please pardon me if I'm not exactly "excited" just yet.....bring home Marshall and I'll be IMPRESSED. Clark is coming here. I'm not even worried about him. LA is a looooooong way from his home. Plus, he knows the TE is a huge part of JH's offensive scheme.

The star system of rating players, I look at it as a "best guess scenario". When you think of the number of high school athletes and trying to rate all of them, its impossible to get it
right.
I think Harbaugh its looking at many things (including the stars), can not speak for him, but believe Jimmy is looking at development possibility. I would rate Gentry it the top 50 of all recruits because Jimmy sees something (Alabama wanted him too) Also you can't teach 6'7" or 6'8", it's there or not.
Look at Jake Long, Hart both 3's. How about once and awhile a walk on makes All-American. The pro draft is also very mistake prone (CLASSIC Michigan bRADY GOING IN THE 6TH ROUND.)
I rest my case, and Go Jimmy, and Blue too!

I'll take a coaches opinion over a rating agency any day of the week.

Mike Hart was a 3 star RB I don't think Kovacs was even rated...

boubucar cissoco was a 5 star

It feels good to be excited about Michigan football, without reservations, again!!!!

GO BLUE!!
