Michigan Friday: This is Becoming One Unbelievable Staff

chatsports
John U Bacon is tweeting that Ty Wheatley as RB coach is a done deal.   Ty's good friend and Michigan Insider Sam Webb has not confirmed the hire yet but does expect Ty to take the role.

This is great news for many reasons:

1: Ty is a legendary RB coming home to be a coach.   He gets to coach under one of the top football coaches in the country and comes with college and NFL experience.

2: Ty's son is a 4 star TE and DE and #1 player in NY State that currently doesn't have Michigan on the radar or planning to take an official visit to.  Having dad on staff has to be a huge factor in his recruitment.

3: Ty grew up in Detroit and will for sure be recruiting that area hard.  He is well known and should have an instant impact from his status as a former Michigan and NFL RB, home grown talent, and being a recent coach in the NFL.

4: Mike Weber - who was a Michigan commit and then de-committed while Michigan was imploding and committed to OSU.   Mike is expected to drive down to Ann Arbor sometime this month and speak to the coaches, he says he is happy at OSU but you never know.  Having Wheat on staff has to help this recruitment a lot.

Great hire and I hope it becomes official soon.

Can Michigan really have 3 OC's on staff?

Reports started late yesterday afternoon that Michigan might offer a job to former Jaguars OC Jeff Fisch as the passing game coordinator.   This guy has worked everywhere from Miami (The U) to Minnesota and was even a GA under Spurrier at Florida. He was just fired from the Jags after trying to get a rookie QB not to throw it to the other team.   This seems like a strange hire if Michigan is also hiring Jimmie Dougherty.   I wonder if one of these reports are wrong, it seems San Jose had already moved on and is hiring Big Al.     24/7 Sports is reporting that Jedd Fisch has been hired.

There is also a rumor brewing that Jimmy might hire Marcus Ray has a DB Analyst - my understanding is this is a paid position but not a coaching position.  Mostly this role is used to watch tape on recruits, practice, etc.  This role has interaction with the coaching staff but not the players.

Bob, Where are we at now with the staff?

This thing seems to change daily.  Don't forget Michigan has only confirmed Durkin.

OC = Drevno
Passing Game Coordinator/WR = Fisch
RB = Wheat
OL= Drevno
TE= Jimmie Dougherty? (Do you leave an OC/Asst. Head Coach role to coach TE's at Mich?)

DC = Durkin
DL = Mattison
LB = Durkin or Mattison
DB = Greg Jackson
DE = Manning?  (I keep hearing he is interviewing but no results)
ST = Baxter

S&C Kevin Tolbert

Michigan can have 9 assistant coaches plus the S&C guy who is not considered an on the field coach.   The big questions remain: on confirming the Wheat hire, is Dougherty still coming here? and will Manning stick?

Also a side note:  Per Sam Webb it sounds like Michigan only has 6 open spots right now for the 2015 class.   That is what the new staff is telling recruits.  I expected more to the 8-10 number.

I'm pretty confident Michigan can find 6 quality players this month.

  • 5 Star (Scouts) WR from Texas and UA AA DaMarkus Lodge now has interest in Michigan that Harbaugh is in town.  He has a Michigan offer and I'm betting someone from the staff gives him a call.
