Michigan Friday: Feels Bad For GR3

Tim Hardaway is getting a ton of minutes for the downtrodden New York Knickerbockers.  Mitch McGary is probably the second player off the bench right now for the Thunder without KD in the line-up.   Nick Stauskas is getting some minutes for the Kings but is averaging under 4 points per game.   The NBA game is much different then college basketball.   Pure shooters have had a hard time breaking an NBA lineup.   Recent examples of famous college shooters that can't get on the floor in the NBA are Adam Morrison, Jimmer and Doug McDermott.  Let's hope Nick can still develop his game off the bounce and get more minutes next year.

Now comes word that Glenn Robinson Jr. III has been released by the Minnesota Timberwolves.  He played in 25 games and mostly in a mop role in losses.   As you might remember, he was taken as the 40th overall pick in the second round by the Timberwolves last year.   I had hope for Glenn on this team as the Timberwolves are clearly re-building and looking for young players to contribute.  Glenn was waived to make room for Justin Hamilton a big guy that was involved in the Heat - Suns trade for Goran Dragic.  As one NBA person said, "they waived one guy off the end of the bench for another".   That really doesn't sound good for GR3's game.

This of course leads to the question: Should have GR3 stayed for another year at Michigan?  I think the clear answer is Yes.   I don't think you leave early to be pick 40.  I really don't question Nick or even Mitch's decision.  Nick was a top 10 pick and Mitch had his hands tied by the NCAA.    So why did GR3 turn pro?  He has NBA athleticism and body,  he is much closer to his ground floor then his ceiling as a player.   The problem is, the NBA is a now business and if your not ready to play, you should either stay in college, play in Europe or join the D-League.

So what's next for GR3?  He is only 21 and has any of those above options.  I'm sure he will try to find a roster spot on an NBA team before the end of the season.   He will then have to really improve his game in the NBA summer league, with the goal of being signed by a team for next season.   If that doesn't happen, he will have to play overseas or in the D-League.    I wish him the best of luck but I really wish he was leading the Maize and Blue to the NCAA Tournament.

30 NBA teams x 2 rounds = 60 selections. Robinson was drafted 40th not 140th.

GR III needs a stint in D league. My guess is he gets a chance. Our team sucks, maybe orlando will pick him up and send him to Erie... he can play beside payton siva and seth curry.

I think he and his family were influenced by Hardaway. I thought Tim should have stayed as well, but his somewhat unexpected success likely influenced GR3. I do think he really developed in Beileins offense, but he still needs to be able to create his own shot. Good luck to GR3 !

You've been on Stauskas' jock for years now. His departure is right behind GR3's. He's a HUGE defensive liability that can't create his own shot. 3 year career at the max and that's only because the NBA is shooter-deficient.
