Michigan Monday: The Roster Shake Up Continues

Many of us had wondered where the attrition would come from after signing such a large 2016 recruiting class.   The news had been slipping out slowly as guys moved on and then we got hit by a tidal wave of news this weekend.

Jimmy announced that Jaron Dukes and Reon Dawson are retiring due to medical issues.  Which means they will stay on scholarship but will never be able to play football again as a Wolverine.

Freddy Canteen who has been a WR and sometimes a DB, recently had shoulder surgery and they are waiting to see if he will join Dukes and Dawson on a medical redshirt.

If all 3 go on a medical that would get Michigan under the 85 limit.   From my understanding, Alabama recruit Dytarious Johnson has until Friday to sign his LOI.  If he is not able to sign Friday, he can still come to Michigan and sign directly for his scholarship.

  • Sam Webb reported that Dave Dawson, Jehu Chesson, Shelton Johnson, Kingston Davis and Karan Higdon were out of practice and in street clothes for the Ford Field practice.

  • Alabama Safety J'Marick Woods is expected to make his announcement on Tuesday.  Michigan is the presumed leader for this 6'4 DB.

  • Michigan Basketball announced that Caris LeVert had another foot surgery this time in NYC.

  • 2018 DE Aidan Hutchinson got offered from Michigan. this weekend.  He is Chris Hutchinson's son.

So those guys listed on medical would remain scholarship but not play football and their scholi's would not count towards the 85, correct?

Is this what happened with Pipkins but he opted to leave and play elsewhere?

Correct. If you take a medical, you can stay in school but even if you feel 100% healthy again, you can't play football at Michigan. Pipkins disagreed with that and left for Texas Tech.
