Michigan Monday: Starting To Pick Up the Pieces and Rutgers

Michigan got blown out last Saturday night which is now history.   It's time to start putting back the pieces of the puzzle for this season and looking at pieces for next as well.

The Rutgers game is the time to do that and the hope is Jimmy gives Brandon Peters some time or even a start. Many fans have wanted that very thing since the Spring Game.

Rutgers is 3-3 and on a 2 game win streak against Illinois and Purdue

They pass for 133 yards a game (122 in the country)
They run of 167 (63)

Defense gives up 23 points (53) a game

They score 26 (84th) points.

ESPN Big Ten Rank: 12 ahead of Maryland and Illinois.

This is not the Rutgers team from last year and they are getting better.   Chris Ash has them playing better defense and being .500 at this point of the season is a win for the program and the new coach.

They did lose to OSU 56-0 three weeks ago and Michigan should still hold an advantage in talent and coaching.  We saw a ton of freshman play against Penn State and I expect to see more this week.  Would love to see more Nico Collins and Kwity Paye.

Time to start building what the team will look like next year.  Let's see if the coaches agree.

Let's hope they can make some changes and close the season strong.

What is hardest for me is that Jimmy & staff seem determined to run their offense the way they want regardless of personnel. I see the Saban's, Meyer's, Peter Carroll at USC, Stoops at OK - heck even James Franklin at Penn State - adjust their offense to fit their guys.

Maybe I am really missing something, but I don't see that at Michigan.

And I have no clue what they are doing with RB's. Last year it seemed Isaac was better but we continued to slam Smith tackle to tackle for 1.8 yards. This year, early, is appeared Isaac was going to break out. He had one fumble and then benched for almost entire game and now he is trying to claw out of dog house.

Maybe I am over analyzing and maybe I am too concerned because under Hoke and RR - for years - we kept running the same ineffective offense and couldn't compete against top tier B10 teams. And I am concerned that will happen again because I have seen it before at MI.

Here’s another perspective. I looked at the 247 Composite for 2108 incoming players. Ohio State has 11 verbal commits out the top 100. Eleven!!! Penn State has 5. Michigan 0. A big goose egg.

Everyone knows these ratings can be off. Shane Morris being a good example. But generally speaking, they provide a pretty good idea of a player’s ability and potential impact. Personally, I think the Harbaugh antics have begun to wear a little thin.

Good analysis by renegade.. but does little for my moral! Yikes!! Maybe something is going on here, what about all the stupid costly penalties, all season? Gad-zooks!
Maybe, I need to find new hobby, like picking my rear!

FWIW I remember Coach Bill Parcells was giving his philosophy about building a team, and he said in essence that a coach needs to know what he's looking for from a player in a particular position and then go get THAT player. He stated it's a big mistake to get someone who doesn't fit what you've decided to do at that position even though it may be an outstanding player because that player may not be able to execute those things that YOU NEED him to do. So always know what you want regardless of what others think and go get THAT player.

That is true for Coach Harbaugh who doesn't star gaze like most of us. That is likely the reason why he runs so many football camps around the country, he's looking for those players that are the best fit. He knows what he wants in a player according to his schemes and he gets those players. You'll find that to be true for all successful coaches. We can see that principle clearly with Coach B with our basketball program. He knows what he wants and he gets them, that is why he's successful.

My point is simply that we shouldn't get the hives if Alabama and OSU get more 5-star players as long as Harbaugh gets the players that he wants. Just a thought. IMHO!!!

I understand your reasoning VoR. Perhaps we should look at the records of Alabama and OSU over the last few years and compare those with Michigan.

I'm not saying Michigan should "out 5 star" those teams, but none in the top 100 as of right now. That says something to me.
