Michigan Monday: Did Michigan Find It's 2015 QB?

Update:  Yes, they did.  Alex Malzone has committed to Michigan.

"I'm very honored and blessed to say that I have committed to play football at the University of Michigan," tweeted Malzone.

Alex Malzone threw for Coach Nuss a couple weeks ago and the reports were he had an excellent work out.  Alex is currently on an un-official visit right and the rumor mill is spinning he could get offered and then commit.

Alex plays at Brother Rice and is listed as 3 star QB from Rivals/ 4 star to Scouts.   He is 6'2 and 166 pounds (6'2 200 on Scouts) with a strong arm.  His offer list includes MAC schools, Wake Forrest and Pitt.

More news could come  came today or Tuesday.

  • Jeremy Gallon gets picked up by New England  in the 7th round.   I'm betting Tom Brady might of had something to do with this pick.   I love this opportunity for Jeremy and hope he stays healthy.   I think he has a great shot of making the roster as a slot WR and a returner.

  • Michael Schofield also landed with Broncos in the 3rd round.  I also liked this pick as Michael  will get to block for Payton Manning.   “It gives us a lot of different options," he said. "With the offensive line there we’re depending on what we do with [OL] Orlando [Franklin] and if he can stay there, but we’re going to look at all of the different options. With his versatility he’ll start at tackle and move inside and play some guard also. We’re going to be playing with a bunch of different combinations, and by the end, I’m sure we’ll come out with the best combination.”

  • MSU won the Big Ten and Rose Bowl and had one player drafted.

Other Free Agent signings:

  • Thomas Gordon to the Giants
  • Fitz is invited to tryout at the Ravens Rookie Camp
  • Jibreel Black will get a tryout with the Steelers
  • Cam Gordon got signed by the Patriots
  • Q Washington will get a tryout at the Raiders Rookie Camp
  • Long Snapper Jareth Glanda will get a tryout with the Saints
  • Former Wolverine Marvin Robinson signed with the Cowboys

Michigan Friday: Taylor To Tennessee

As you know, in somewhat of a surprise move the Tennessee Titans took Taylor Lewan with the 11th pick in the first round.   Tennessee seemed to be locked up at the tackle position with 9 year starter Micheal Roos and newly signed and former "Blindside" tackle from the Ravens Michael Oher.

"I know they have two established offensive tackles," said Lewan of the Titans. "My job is to bring competition ... and at the same time learn from these guys. I want to understand how they made it so long and how I can be one of those guys who can play for a long time as well."

Most mock drafts had Taylor going to 6 to the Falcons who ended up taking NFL Legacy player Jake Matthews.

  •  Aubrey Dawkins signed his LOI to Michigan today.

  • In a head scratching move, Jim Tressel has been named the next president of Youngstown State University.

Enjoy the draft tonight and this weekend.  I think Schofield will get drafted and hopefully someone is going to take a chance on Jeremy Gallon in the late rounds.

Michigan Thursday: Big Night For Taylor Lewan

Is Taylor Lewan Rich Rod's top recruit that played at Michigan?   I think many could argue Denard, but Denard really didn't have an NFL position and is still struggling to find one.   (I think there could be a joke in there somewhere about Taylor and Denard being the only two Rich Rod recruits that didn't transfer) Taylor tonight will go somewhere in the top 10 of the draft and will be Michigan's highest draft pick since Jake Long in 2008.  Brandon Graham was taken 13th in the 2010 draft.

Good luck to Taylor tonight and for his future NFL career.

  •  Local boy OL prospect David Moorman has committed to Wisconsin.  David had visited Ann Arbor a couple times but did not have an offer.  David did not have an offer from MSU either.

  • Many mock drafts have the Lions taking Darqueze Dennard the DB from MSU tonight.

  • West Virginia transfer Eron Harris finally got his release yesterday.   ESPN is reporting Coach B has already contacted him.  The flood gates then opened and Butler, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan State, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Ohio State and UCLA all called him.   “We respected (West Virginia coach Bob Huggins') coaching style but it probably wasn't the best fit,” Eric Harris  (Eron's father) said. “Looking for that right fit as far as a coach goes is probably the biggest thing."----“The fit is more important that the location (of the school),” Harris said. “Eron is used to seeing his brothers and family more than he has the past couple years. But if he has to go to New York or California to find the right fit, then that's what he'll do.”

Michigan Monday: Tries To Recover From a Blowout

Life in the Big Ten is a tough for any basketball team.  Michigan found out on Saturday afternoon just how bad it could get in a blowout loss to Iowa.   What's even harder for John Beilein's team is they have to travel to CBus and take on a talented Ohio State team tomorrow at 9:00.

The new strategy to shutdown Nik seems to be to put a smaller guard him and try to lock up his quickness and contest his shot.   Coach B need a find a way to get Nik some more touches and a way to take advantage of his size difference.   I actually would like to see Nik run a little point for time to time.  He is a very good passer and could even get a pick and shoot a 3.

Either way, Michigan's defense has to get better (mostly on the road) if they are going to win or share the Big Ten title.    Tuesday is going to be another tough game.

  • Time if flying for Shane Morris.  He can't believe he has 3 years left.  (unless they redshirt him this year).

  • 5 star LB Mike Mitchell is transferring from Ohio State to be closer to home in Texas, where his father is sick.  Mike also has a younger brother who plays basketball and is committed to OSU.

  • Quick question:  How many former head coaches are the Pistons still paying?   I really don't know, but it must be a few.

  • Taylor Lewan is in the mix for being the top tackle taken in the NFL Draft.

  • Would you be surprised to learn that Spring Practice starts in two weeks?   I was.  It stars 2/25 and the Spring Game is April 5th.

Michigan Friday: It's Quiet After a Busy Week

Malik is not coming to Ann Arbor and most of  these type of situations get ironed out and the player gets to go to the school he wants to attend.  Since it's the only drama in the area, here is a quick update:

Malik told friend and teammate Lawrence Marshall that he was going to big Michigan before his announcement and Lawrence was shocked when he heard his choice of Michigan State.  Maybe he forgot to mention the word "state" when speaking to Lawrence.

Here is Rivals Mike Farrell's take:

“The mom is the issue,” Farrell said. “She hates Michigan State. The father wants Ohio State. The mother wants Ohio State or Florida State. Malik wants Michigan State. He’s upset how public his mom has made it -- on radio, social media and elsewhere.

“They’ve got to get it resolved. They’ve had months to talk about this. But I don’t see her as the giving-in type of person.”

To Mike's point this recruitment has been going on about 2 years.  These issues should have been brought up early in the process and resolved by now.   Either way I wish him good luck on his choice.

I'm sure OSU would find room for him but they stole a DE from MSU on signing day, so they are probably full at that position now.   There always seems to be room for a 5 star.

------------

The Michigan Basketball Team takes the floor again on Saturday against a good Iowa team at Iowa.  This game and their trip to Columbus next week will be a good test to see if the Wolverines truly has a chance to win the regular season Big Ten title.

  • Michigan players invited to the NFL combine in Indy include:  Taylor Lewan, Mike Schofield and Jeremy Gallon.

  • Taylor is 11 and 12 in separate ESPN Mock Drafts.

Michigan Friday: Recuriting Updates and A Trip To East Lansing

MSU is banged up and might be with out injured big men Adriean Payne and now Branden Dawson who broke his hand on a table after watching film.  Those two guys are/were a big advantage for Sparty over the smaller Michigan lineup.  If Michigan shoots well they should stay in this game.

  • Darn It Dad!  Nik backed off his dad's comment on the NBA“I apologize for my father’s comments,” he said Wednesday. “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I haven’t really thought anything about that yet. We’ll just address it after the season.”

  • Damien Harris mom's weighs in on his de-commitment (from Scouts through Mgoblog): “The reason he came to this decision is he felt like when he committed, at the time, we felt like it was the right decision even though it was early,” she explained.  “Months later he has been thinking and thinking, ‘I didn’t really go and look at other places probably like I should have.  I didn’t consider other places like I should have.’   Even though Michigan is #1, and that hasn’t changed, he just wants to make sure he doesn’t have any regrets when he gets ready to enroll.  He just wants to make sure that he didn’t leave any stone unturned and wants to make sure he didn’t miss out on anything, even though he knows Michigan is still his #1.  That’s all.  He is just making sure that if he was to visit other places, he wasn’t going to regret not taking the full experience.”  I guess there have been some "so called" Michigan fans giving him the business on Twitter.  I know every fan base has some crazies, but it's never a good idea to tweet at a high school player or any amateur athlete.

  • Michael Schofield has played much better at Right Tackle then Right Guard at the Senior Bowl.  It seems he is much more comfortable at Tackle.

  • Michigan seems very focused on Cass Tech RB Mike Weber now that Harris has checked out of the class.  His top 5 are MSU, Tenn, Michigan, OSU and Wisconsin.  The Wolverines might have some catch up to do in his recruitment but I think Mike is very interested in U of M.  I like how involved Coach Nuss is in recruiting.  Big Al didn't hit the road too often even though he was the key recruiter for Damien Harris.

  • I don't have a good feeling on the McDowell recruitment.  He is heading up to MSU for an official visit this weekend after saying he wouldn't do an instate official.   He still may visit to LSU and cancel Ohio State.  Could he be visiting MSU this weekend to support the Wolverines in the basketball game?

  • BHB Loyal Reader Augusta J wanted an update on RB Jeff Jones and Michigan.  I honestly don't know, it seems the Michigan coaches knew Harris was "jumping ship" when they decided to stop recruiting RB's in the 2014 class.   Is Jeff still visiting?  I doubt it.

Michigan MLK Day Holiday Edition

Happy MLK Today to all Michigan Fans!  I hope you get a chance to have the day off and enjoy some time with family and friends.

There is something about this Michigan Wolverine Basketball team.  It's not always pretty and sometimes it looks they are doing it with mirrors but they get it done.   On Saturday night, they had a season defining win against the #3 ranked team in the nation the Wisconsin Badgers.   To be fair, Wisconsin was coming off a loss to IU in Bloomington where they got a bit exposed against the pick and roll.   It seem John Beilein and staff watched that film and went in to the Kohl Center with a similar strategy.

Michigan hadn't beaten a top 5 team on the road since 1964.  Which doesn't seem possible with all the good teams that have rolled through Ann Arbor but it just shows you how hard it is to win on the road in college basketball.   Michigan also had another nasty streak broken on Saturday, they were 0-10 in the Kohl Center, never winning in Wisconsin's new arena.  They pushed back both slumps and left Wisconsin with a 77-70 win.

The one thing that is very clear is that Nik Stauskas is Trey Burke 2014.  Michigan was looking for Derrick Walton or others to step up but this is Stauskas team now.  He scored the last 11 points and was on the bench for a rest during most of Wisconsin's comeback.   That step back, bounce through the legs, 3 pointer was just cold blooded and the shot of the game.   This team is far from perfect but they sure are fun to watch.   When they shoot well and play a bit of defense they are hard to beat.

They have a really tough road ahead with a very hot Iowa team in Crisler and a trip to East Lansing (ESPN Game Day) this week.

  • Speaking of ESPN it sounds like they are trying to move Brett Musburger to the SEC Network and replacing him on Saturday Night Football.

  • Michigan's 2014 RB recruiting is getting quite interesting.   Michigan seems very much in play for Jeff Jones who is visiting on 1/31 and Florida RB Marlon Mack who de-committed from UCLA the same day he was offered by the Wolverines.    This could be interesting as Signing Day approaches.   The same goes with the quiet Malik McDowell, who just visited FSU and it seemed to go very well.  Now I'm hearing he will visit MSU next week instead of LSU, with OSU the following week.   I believe he is also planning a day trip to Ann Arbor to talk to the coaches at some point.   Nobody really knows anything at this point but most believe he will stay close to home and go to OSU, MSU or Michigan.   I hope the Michigan coaches have a back up plan.   Update:  Rumors are starting to fly that Michigan might take a pass on both RB's they have offers to out to right now.   Since interest seemingly continues to be there, it sound like it could be a transcript issue or maybe they want to show a commitment to Damien Harris.   Both are guesses, but if true that leaves only Malik on the table for the 2014 close.

  • A record 98 under classman entered this years draft.  Last year it was 73 and the year before it was 65.

  • Gallon was the East's leading receiver in the East West Shrine Game on Saturday.  He had 4 catches for 55 yards with a long of 25.

Michigan Monday: U of M Basketball and College Football Stuff!

The Michigan Basketball team moved to 2-0 in the Big Ten with a home win over Northwestern on Sunday afternoon.   The Wolverines started slowly but got it into gear half way through the first half and never looked back.  It was clear the Wildcats did not have the talent to match-up with the Wolverines.

I have been impressed with Jon Horford now that McGary is out, he is really stepping up and playing some nice defense.   Even Jordan Morgan got it going in the low post on Sunday.  Michigan will need both guys to play well if they are going to compete with the elite teams in the Big Ten.    GR3 was back and seemed healthy, the ankle didn't seem to bother him at all with some nice dunks and solid defense on Crawford, Northwestern' s best player (btw how long has Crawford been there?  It seems like 10 years).   Nik lead the team with 18 points with most of them coming from the line.

The Wolverines travel to Nebraska on Thursday, their only game next week.

  • Texas makes a Strong hire in getting Charlie Strong from Louisville.  I always thought he was a good coach and a great recruiter in Florida.  I'm sure he will be do a great job at Texas.

  • Penn State continues it's search and it interviewed Al Golden and the recently fired Mike Munchak.  Al says he is staying at Miami, so it seems it might be Mike or bust.   Vandy coach James Franklin's name also continues to be mentioned.

  • Former Michigan recruits Sammy Watkins is going pro and OSU's Braxton Miller is staying in Columbus.  Sammy had Michigan #1 after his trip up for the Spring Game, what might have been Sammy!  He is rated the #1 WR in he draft.

  • Even though Kansas City lost to Indy this weekend, it was great to see Junior Hemingway get so much playing time.  He finished the year with 13 catches and two TD's for 125 yards but played a lot the last two weeks.

  • RR is reportedly the #1 candidate on Louisville's short list for a new head coach.   I'm not sure Rita is going to move from the desert to Louisville.  RR does seem to like cowboys and might want a horse farm. Pat Narduzzi's name has also been mentioned.

Enjoy the BCS Championship game tonight.  I have it FSU 38 Auburn 28.

Michigan Tuesday: The Drake Is Sold Out

I hate to lead a post with injury news but we heard yesterday that RB Drake Johnson from Ann Arbor Pioneer who beat out highly touted freshman Green and Smith tore his ACL in the Central game and will miss the entire season.  My guess is he will get an injury redshirt and still have 4 more years in A2 if he wants it.

From Coach Hoke's presser Joe Reynolds is day to day and Avery is close to being ready to play.  I hope when he says close he means Saturday night at 8:00.   Funchess just had a cramp if you were worried.

  • Derrick Green is now the #2 RB behind Fitz.

  • More Drake news:  Drake Harris visited A2 on Saturday, he is out a couple weeks with a hamstring issue.   RB Mike Weber was also on the sideline.

  • Congrats to the new Wolverines in the NFL:  Kovacs made the Dolphins practice team,  Roh made the practice team for Panthers,  Omameh made the 49'ers practice squad,  Demens made Arizona's practice squad and Denard and Big Will made the 53 man roster for the Jags and Jets.   Mike Cox made the Giants and Junior Hemmingway made KC's 53!

  • These guys did not make the team: WR Roy Roundtree (Cincinnati), OG Elliott Mealer (New Orleans), WR Steve Breaston (New Orleans), OL David Molk and Steve Schilling (San Diego), P Zoltan Mesko (New England), WR Braylon Edwards (New York Jets).

  • Zoltan has already signed with the Steelers and look for Molk & Schilling to get picked up as well.

  • These guys are good:  Malik McDowell had 5 TFL's in his first game after transferring to Southfield and Damien Harris 2nd game: 13 carries, 352 yards, 5 TDs, out of game 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter.

Michigan Monday: Fall Practice Day 1

So today is the start of practice for the 2013 season.   Today, some questions start to get answered.

  • Is Derrick Green, ready for the Big Stage?
  • Is Fitz healthy?
  • Will Devin Gardner be practicing in bubble wrap to keep him healthy?
  • How will the defense respond to losing it's best player to injury?
  • Which other freshman will step up?
  • Which veterans will step up?
Today there are more questions then answers and that is the way it should be on day 1.  If Michigan can keep Devin healthy, I think this could be a fun year.

  • Da'Shawn Hand has set an announcement date of 11/14 at his school.   He is still planning to make his official visit to Ann Arbor for the UTL2 game against ND.

  • The #5 rated player in the 2015 class (24/7) 2015 VA DT Tim Settle will also be joining Mr. Hand at UTL2.

  • All the Wangler's belong in Ann Arbor! We all know John was a QB, his son Jack is walking on this year, his daughter will be playing basketball at Michigan and now Michigan has offered 2014 LB Jared who is currently committed to play at Penn State and has an LSU offer.   I believe John and Les are close friends.  Jared is a 3 star prospect to Scouts.

  • I didn't see the game but I guess Kovcs got a good amount of snaps in the Hall of Fame Game last night against Dallas.

Wolverine Wednesday: Denard Inks Deal and Burke Continues to Struggle

Denard Robinson signed his first NFL contract on Tuesday and NCAA Football 14 was released with his photo on the cover.   I would call that a good day! According the league's rookie slotting system, Robinson gets a signing bonus around $210,000 and counts about $450,000 against the salary cap.  No other terms were released.

Trey Burke who just signed on Sunday struggled again in his second NBA Summer League Game.  He went 5-for-15 outing for 11 points.   "He's going to be a good player," Lowe said. "There's no need to worry about Trey Burke right now."

  • By now many of you have heard about the Columbus boy that is fighting cancer that he called "Michigan".  My first reaction was "how disrespectful to the University and the State".   Then I realized it doesn't matter what the boy called his disease, just that he beat it and hopefully won't have to deal with it again.   Many people in Ohio take this rivalry way too personal and this is another example, but the important thing is this 12 year-old continues to beat cancer and can live a normal life.

  • Speaking of Wolverines signing their first professional contracts: Tim Hardaway Jr. and the Knicks have agreed to terms on a four-year deal for $6.1 million.  Tim will play his first summer league game on Friday.

Michigan Thursday: Brady on Mike and Mike & Some Recruiting

Brady Hoke is a good sport and went on ESPN's radio's Mike and Mike this morning.   He was joking around with Mike Golic on the "Chickening Out" comment.   It's was pretty funny and it's good to have a coach with a personality and one that doesn't cry at the drop of a hat.   I wish Brady dropped the fact that Michigan stopped by South Bend on their way to the West Coast sometime in the 1800's and taught ND how to play football.

  • 2014 DB Parrker Westphal is visiting Arizona State this weekend and then will have a top 8 list after that.  Parrker has been to A2 a few times now and said the Wolverines were the standard he would measure all his trips by.   Look like his recruitment will go well into the summer and maybe even into the season.

  • Future Michigan QB Wilton Speight will participate in Elite 11 QB competition on May 18th.  If he does well, look for his ranking to sky rocket.   It seems the Michigan coaches see something the recruiting services don't at this point.

  • Denard has been taking shotgun snaps at QB in Jacksonville.   It would be crazy not to use him in certain wildcat situations.   A surprise throw now and then wouldn't hurt either.   Jacksonville is a perfect place for Denard:  his home state and with a team that has been struggling on offense and needs playmakers.

  • Michigan top targets right now are the following recruits:  Jabrill Peppers, Alex Bars, Chase Winovich, Da'Shawn Hand, Artavis Scott and Malik McDowell.

Wolverine Wednesday: Life is Like a Punt - It Has It's Up and Downs

I'm sure that is what Michigan punter Will Hagerup is thinking today.  Yesterday, he got good news and bad news.  He is re-instated to the Michigan Football program and will sit out the entire 2013-2014 season.  This is the Darryl Stonum punishment if you are looking for a reference.

This is Will's third and last chance as a Wolverine.  He was suspended back in the Rich Rod days and now has been away from the Michigan Football program since last season.   If he is a good student athlete and a good teammate the next 12 months he will complete his eligibility in Ann Arbor.

Let's hope Will has solved his problems and can move forward.

  • There has been talk from the Jaguars organization that Denard will get 10-15 touches a game, which includes kick off returns.

  • 2014 RB Jonathan Hilliman announced a top 7 of: Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Rutgers, Stanford, Boston College and Vanderbilt.  He is ranked 3 stars by Rivals but has a 4 star offer sheet.

  • Lawrence Marshall will be back in Ann Arbor this weekend.  WOTS is he is a MSU lean.  This weekend might be the tipping point for the Wolverines.

  •  Chris Webber's disassociation from U of M is officially over.  Let's hope this story has a positive ending.

  • Kaleb Ringer has moved to Big Rapids to live and work out with his brother.  He hasn't made a decision on his next school yet.

  • A great profile of Jordan Kovacs on Miami Dolphins web site.  They say he has a great shot at making the team.   Having the owner as a big fan doesn't hurt either.   Remember when I joked that Stephen Ross probably wanted to sign Kovas?  Well, I was right.  Ross called Kovacs and asked him to sign a free agent contract with the Dolphins.

Michigan Monday: Draft Dodgers

The NFL Draft came and went with only two Wolverines being selected and a number of other guys getting free agents contracts.  When the Draft started on Thursday night, I had really two goals for the former Wolverines:

  1. Denard to get drafted on Friday and not by the Oakland Raiders:  That didn't happen and he had to wait until the 5th round to get selected by the Jaguars.   I think Jacksonville is a good fit for a number of reasons; they need a ton of offense, Denard gets to go back to Florida and he seems to play better in warmer environments.   The downside is that Denard might have played his worst game as a Wolverine in Jacksonville's home stadium or the home of the Gator Bowl.
  2. Big Will gets drafted.   This happened and he is going to the Jets.  Not sure on the fit but we will see.

The interesting thing for both Denard and Big Will is it seems neither will be playing the positions they thought they would be.  Denard was a QB in college but was in the draft as a WR.  Jacksonville tweeted they drafted Denard Robinson a running back.  The buzz from the media out of NY was the Jets drafted Big Will to be an offensive lineman.   Many colleges were recruiting Big Will as an offensive lineman when he was a senior in high school.

Here is a list of Wolverines and where they signed free agent contracts:

  • Craig Roh - Carolina Panther
  • Roy Roundtree - going home and playing for the Cincinnati Bengals
  • Elliott Mealer - New Orleans Saints
  • Jordan Kovacs- Miami Dolphins (I'm betting Stephen Ross watched a few Michigan games the last couple of years and made sure they signed Kovacs)
  • Patrick Omameh- San Francisco 49ers
  • Ricky Barnum- Washington Redskins
  • Kenny Demens- Houston Texans
  • Brandin Hawthorne- St. Louis Rams

How about the former Wolverines?

  • Surprisingly Mike Cox got drafted in the second to last pick in the 7th round.   Talk about a turn around.  He goes from the bottom of the depth chart, to transferring, to NFL Draft pick.
  • Darryl Stonum- Kansas City Chiefs
  • Dann O'Neill- Houston Texans
  • Update:  Sam McGuffie to the Raiders

Michigan Thursday: Does Anyone Feel A Draft?

Tonight starts the first round of the NFL Draft.  We won't see any Wolverines go in the first round tonight, but I expect Denard to go in the second round on Friday night.   Denard might be the only Wolverine drafted.   I think someone might pick up Kenny Demens, Big Will and Kovacs late in the draft but I expect most of the guys to be free agents.

I think Craig Roh could be a player with a nice upside as a free agent.  It seems he played pretty much every position on Michigan's defense in his 4 years.  Good Luck to all the Wolverines on Draft Weekend!

Here is my $.02 on the NFL Draft this year.  Don't draft a QB in the first round!  Don't do it!

Memo to Lions:  Please draft offense lineman and a bunch DB's.

  • Michigan is in really nice position for Paramus (N.J.) Catholic teammates Jabrill Peppers and Juwann Bushell-Beatty.  Peppers is rated the #2 player in the nation at CB by ESPN and JBB is a 6'7 OL and a top 150 player .  Peppers is saying he will visit Stanford in July and will know which school he is going to attend after that visit.   JBB would like to make a decision this summer as well.  I think Michigan has a great shot at this pair.

  • Michael Ferns has accepted an invitation to play in the UA All American Game joining Wilton Speight and Drake Harris.

  • 4 star CB Jalen Tabor is taking a mid-week visit to Ann Arbor and might be on campus right now.  He might wait until signing day to make a decision and I willing to bet, Michigan's small class will be filled by then.

  • Barry Sanders is on the cover of Madden next year and Denard is on NCAA Football 14.

Michigan Thursday: Playing Catch Up on Some News

Tim Hardaway, Jr. decided to throw his name into the NBA draft ring yesterday.   ESPN has him rated the #55 player in the draft which is a middle second round player.   So we will see if he made the right decision or not.   I have a feeling the Hardaway camp felt the risk was worth it, because being a senior is all most a negative now for the NBA Draft.    I don't know if you agree or not, but this has a Darius Morris/Manny Harris feel to me.  Now we will see what happens with GR3 and MM.

  • Zack Irvin was given his 5th star as being Gatorade's Indiana Player of the year.   He is rated the 24th player in the nation by Rivals. This might help the loss of THJ.

  • Walk-On Alert: Gregory Froelich 6'3 275 pounds from N.J., here are his highlights.

  • Denard made up for his terrible first pitch at the Tigers game, by throwing a strike at Michigan's Jackie Robinson Day game.

  • Did you know we are a week away from Round 1 of the NFL Draft?

  • Big Will and Kenny Demens recently worked out for the Lions.   Big Will is estimated as a late round pick and Kenny a free agent.

  • 2015 Recruit Update:  Garrett Taylor and his teammate Ricky DeBerry sounds like they might visit A2 this weekend.  Some folks are speculating Ricky could be the #1 recruit in the nation next year.

  • I hope Kevin Koger gets a shot at making an NFL team.  He was expected to be a mid round draft pick last year before tearing his Achilles right before the draft.

  • If you have heard, Michigan has a pretty good baseball team this year, lead by a bunch of freshman including a Ann Arbor Pioneer Alum.

Michigan Monday: Visit Reactions and Auburn Hills

I didn't see a 4 seed coming, I was thinking a 2 or 3 a week ago. With the loss to Wisconsin and how Michigan has played of late a 4 seed seems about right.   They are lucky to be staying home and playing in Auburn Hills.   I don't know if they will be staying out there or sleeping in their own beds but either way its nice for the Wolverines to be close to home.   I don't know much about the Jackrabbits but I'm sure they will be ready to play and looking to beat Michigan in their backyard.

Now on to Recruiting:

  • Hand had a "great visit" in his words.  He enjoyed hanging out with the players the most.   He will be back up for the ND game for his official visit.

  • Berger enjoyed the visit and his highlight was watching practice and how the coaches were flying around in practice.   He mentioned new coach Roy Manning and he and his dad got to spend some time 1 on 1 with Roy after practice.  Still planning an early summer decision and looking to visit OSU and Tennessee next.

  • Doles was similar to Berger in his reaction, he enjoyed seeing practice and the how the coaches interact with the players.  There wasn't a commit and he could be very close to a decision.  I wonder if he is waiting on another offer or something.  It seems he has the highest probability to be Michigan's next commit but we will see.

  • Weishar is excited about Michigan and enjoyed talking with the coaches and the school overall.  He is clearly a guy that is high on academics.   He will visit ND next in a couple weeks.  Most believe this to be a Michigan - ND race with ND the slight leader out of the gate.

Here are some of the number for the early enrollees for Spring Ball:

Butt = 88
Douglas = 7
LTT = 72
Bosch = 65

Here is an article on Denard's impressive Pro Day and how Big Will might be moving up from a un-drafted free agent to being drafted.   Kovas is still 50/50 if he will be a drafted vs. a free agent but he helped his cause with a strong Pro Day.

Michigan Friday: Lends a Hand

Updated Clap 12:30 PM: Greg Mattison contract extended until 2016.   Which is huge.  You could argue that Mattison is the most important coach on staff.  Now he is locked into 4 more years!!!

The first Hand goes to the Michigan Basketball team that struggled early against a team that has given them trouble twice this year.  They started to focus in the second half and put Penn State away for the year.  Well done!  Now they need to redeem themselves against the Hail Mary win Wisconsin had earlier this year.   Tip time is 2:30 again ESPN.

Second Hand goes to:  Jordan Kovas who had a very nice Pro Day on Thursday.  He had a bet with Denard and Shoelaces will be buying dinner.   Kovacs ran a 4.6 40, 20 yard shuffle in 4.19,  and a 6.62 in the three-cone drill.   Denard didn't run the 40 and just did WR and Returner drills.   There are highlights on Mgoblue of his drills and some guys running the 40.  Big Will ran with his shirt off and looked pretty good.  There were rumors that the Patriots gave Kovacs a private workout.

Third hand waves good bye to 3 Wolverines:  TE Nate Allspach, S Drew Offerdahl, and DL Kenny Wilkins.  None of them were expected to contribute and we wish them well in life or at their next football spot.  Kenny was the only scholarship player.

Fourth Hand continues to lay flat for Will Hagerup who is still suspended.

The Fifth Hand goes to the #1 Recruit in the Nation!:  DE Da'Shawn Hand who is expected to be in Ann Arbor this weekend for the start of Spring Practice.   "Da'Shawn Hand is one of the most physically impressive junior prospects that I have ever seen," said Scout.com East Coast recruiting analyst, Michael Clark. "He looks like he should be a junior in college, not high school. Hand is one of those rare prospects who have the total package."

The Sixth Hand claps for a classy former Wolverine, Jeff Backus who called it a career yesterday.  He had spent 12 years in the NFL.

A high five goes to all the 2014 visitors this weekend which also include:  2014 TE Nic Weishar, 2014 LB commit Michael Ferns, 2014 LB Kyle Berger and new news 2014 OL Tommy Doles.

Thumbs down for the uniforms Michigan is going to wear today.  There were reports Michigan was not going to wear these Adidas jerseys.

Go Blue!  Play hard this weekend in Chicago!

Michigan Thursday: Wishes Good Luck to the Wolverines on Pro Day

Today is Pro Day for the Wolverines, I hope everyone does well.

Here is Denard's Pro Day Interview from the NFL Network from earlier this week.

  • Dan Wetzel from Yahoo does a nice article on Denard's Pro Day and graduating in May.  Denard did not elect to go to leave school and train in Florida or Arizona.  He decided to stay in school and graduate.   Classic Denard.

  • Mason Cole's teammate Artavis Scott will be visiting again for the Spring Game.  Mason is coming as well.   Many are expecting that Michigan might not be leading for Artavis, but he keeps things pretty quiet.   George Campbell a 2015 WR from the same school is also very high on the Wolverines.  George tweeted this picture of him and Mason on Tuesday.

  • 2014 LB Kyle Berger from Cleveland is also making his second visit this weekend.  He is going to take in a Spring Practice on Saturday.  His buddy Michael Ferns will also be in Ann Arbor.

Michigan plays at 2:30 EST against Penn State.  Be careful here, Michigan needs to show up.  Game is on BTN.

Wolverine Wednesday: Pro Day and Saturday Practice

Tomorrow is Pro Day for the former Wolverine seniors looking to take the next step to the NFL.   Guys like Roy Roundtree, Craig Roh, JT Floyd, Big Will, Kovacs and Kenny Demens will get a chance to showcase their skills to NFL scouts.   Denard Robinson of course got to show his stuff at the NFL Combine and at the Senior Bowl.   The rumor is Denard will throw passes on Thursday.

“I’m pretty focused on all of the drills because that’s what I’ve been working on since the Outback Bowl,” Roundtree said. “Also been working on my 40. Everybody wants to see if you run fast or run slow.  The biggest thing is the 40.”

“I’m in a position where I have a lot to prove,” cornerback J.T. Floyd said. “Scouts want to know how fast I am, so I have to prove that. My ball skills, I didn’t have any interceptions my senior year and that was the first time, every year I had an interception except my redshirt freshman year and senior year in college.

“High school, multiple interceptions. I am anxious to show my ball skills and movement. That’s critical for a corner.”

Spring practice starts on Saturday and there is a new ESPN interview with Brady Hoke up.   Nothing ground breaking but he did confirm Norfleet is back on offense.

Brady on RB situation this Spring:

BH: You know, Fitz has come along pretty well. I don't think he'll do a lot of contact or anything like that, but I think he'll be cleared for a lot more drill work. That's gone real well. We've moved [Dennis] Norfleet back to running back and we're going to give him an opportunity. Dennis, he's a smaller guy, but he's a very competitive, very tough young man. Drake Johnson is a guy we redshirted a year ago, and we really liked the way he competed in scout situations. In the bowl practices, we did some scrimmages and gave him a lot of carries, and we're very excited about what he has to offer. Thomas Rawls is coming back, and I think he learned a lot last year about the vision he needs to play with, and I like how he's competed through the [winter]. And Justice Hayes is a guy who gives you a little bit different look because of how he can get on the perimeter. He did some things in a couple of games last year, but now I think he'll have a big stage to prove himself more this spring. And he's a bigger guy now, he's 190-something pounds, so he's a little bigger.

There are more updates on the offensive lines and pretty much all the positions in the article.
