Wolverine Wednesday: Conley Decommits & Lewan Looks at the NFL

Recruiting 18 year old kids must be an equally rewarding and frustrating experience.   Gareon Conley who said on Sunday he was fully committed to Michigan, de-committed to Greg Mattison when he visited his school on Tuesday.   This is a situation where a kid gets a Michigan offer and jumps on it this past summer.  He has a nice senior year and he starts getting offers from other big schools, figures he might have put all his eggs in one basket and wants to take some visit.  So he de-commits to see if the grass is greener in Columbus or as an Oregon Duck.

Could he still be a Wolverine at the end of the process?  He could but the two other players that have done it (under Hoke at Michigan) have not become a Wolverine (David Dawson could but it's highly unlikely).  I would guess that Ohio State is the team to beat at this point.

What does this mean for the rest of the class?  Michigan has plenty of CB's on the roster but 6'2 corners are hard to find and the reason the Michigan coaches wanted him.  I expect Michigan to look around and some of the top CB's and try to replace him.  Leon McQuay of course is still out there and he seems to be seriously considering coming to Ann Arbor, even though he projects to Safety.

Taylor Lewan will submit his name to the NFL Advisory Committee to see where he might project in next years draft.  From what I have seen, most draft experts consider him to be a first round draft  pick and even as high as the #5 pick in the entire draft.   Right now it's about 85/15 that he leaves.  You never know how a senior year will go and that money is hard to pass up even though there is a rookie cap now.   Could he use another year of college? yes but passing up a top 5 pick is hard to do.  I thought he had a good but not great junior year.  Taylor was named the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the year, yesterday.   If Taylor leaves, Michael Schofield will be the only offense line starter returning.

  • The Michigan Basketball team had a nice win over NC State at Crisler last night.   I love that they have 4 guys that could go for 20+ any night.   I also like seeing 3 guys that are down on the post banging on defense and getting some boards.

  • Speaking of recruiting and the offensive line:  Michigan has just offered UCLA Commit Kenny Lacy.  Kenny is a 4 star tackle to Rivals from Phoenix.   He is listed at 6'6 and 270 pounds.  Lewan is from the Phoenix area and now they have offered another Arizona offensive lineman.  Kenny is a 2013 class recruit.
