Michigan Monday: What I Learned This Weekend

The Big Ten Championship was clearly played a week ago in Columbus.  Ok, maybe not so much but that was a terrible showing by Wisconsin.    I wonder if that was more of OSU being great or Wisconsin being pretty poor.  Not sure I understood the Wisconsin game plan, lets run our best player and if they take it away, lose by a hundred.

The state of the Big Ten is another reason why Michigan's decline has been so depressing.   Last point,  how in the hell can OSU have 3 QB's better then any of Michigan's QB's currently on the roster?   Is it the system, is it the coaching, is it the talent?  Maybe all of the above.  Jimmy come save us!

  • 49'ers lost to Oakland last night and Woodson got the final pick to put a nail in the coffin.  The NFL insiders are keeping to their story that Jimmy is staying in the NFL.  The Michigan insiders are feeling like Michigan has a great shot of getting him after the season.  Until Jimmy says publically that he isn't coming to Ann Arbor, he is in play.   Would love to have known if Jimmy and Woodson had a discussion after the game.  There clearly could be a good discussion on Michigan and the Raiders.   Seattle and Arizona also both won games and put the 49'ers on the outside of the playoffs right now.

  • Reports are that Jimmy is getting a ton of pressure from former players to come to Ann Arbor.  Anthony Carter is one guy of those guys that has spoken to him about coming home.   The former players are convinced he will at least consider the job.  This is probably where a lot of the information is coming from.

  • There are also reports floating around that Hackett was out to meet with Jimmy this weekend and left with the impression he wants to stay in the NFL.   First off it's great they are meeting, second if Jimmy did say that it would be good for Michigan to know where he stands.  Michigan insiders believe that was not the final result of the meeting and he is still considering Michigan.   Someone is going to be really wrong in this whole deal.   I really don't see Jimmy keeping Michigan on the line for another 3 weeks while he considers other opportunities.

  • With the Oakland lost, some speculate the 49'ers might fire Jimmy this week.  I highly doubt this will happen.  They want to trade him after the season for a bag full of draft picks.

  • There are reports floating around that Mullen is available and would take the Michigan job in a second.   He wants out and MSU who will try to keep him with a raise and a extension.  If Jimmy says no and Les is just too much trouble, Hackett should close this deal.

  • Miles has said he hasn't been contacted about the Michigan job, which is probably accurate. Michigan hopefully has only contacted Jimmy and everyone else has been through their agents.

  • Sam Webb said this weekend that Greg Schiano and BC's Steve Addazio are climbing up the list.  If there are 20 guys on the list, this should be #19 and #20.   Schiano is clearly politicking for the job and Addazio just doesn't have the track record to be  the Michigan's coach.  Gil Brandt even sent out a tweet about Schiano and Michigan.   Saying there are high powered NFL coaches that support the move.  Of course they do, Schiano doesn't have any friends in the NFL.

  • An SI.com and Michigan alum Bob Estes even tweeted that Sean Payton would be interested in the Michigan job if approached.  I think Sean is the highest paid coach in the NFL with his new contract.   This seems like a huge reach.

  • The where will Jimmy end up bet in Vegas went from 8-1 to 2-1 to being pulled off the board. The max bet was only $2K and all the action was on Michigan.  So Vegas thought they might not be in the loop and pulled the bet.

  • Michigan dropped a basketball game on Saturday to a school I had never heard of.   NJIT got hot and beat Michigan at their own game.   I don't worry too much about this loss as its a great teaching moment for this young team that the Michigan coaches can use.   It was a clear let down game after the Syracuse win.

  • Rich Rod is a good offensive football coach.   I think most would agree with that.  He is a prefect fit at a basketball school that hasn't ever done much in football.   He had a good year and beat Oregon in consecutive years.   The two biggest games of his life was when WVU was a 28 point favorite at home and a game away from BCS National Championship game and lost to Pitt and this weekends PAC 12 Championship game where they lost 51-13.

The longer this coaching search plays out and the more games the 49'ers lose, the better it is for Michigan.    Hackett could get on a plane and hire a coach like Nebraska and Florida did, it seems they are willing to wait for the right choice.

I don't see Harbaugh coming home. since he trashed the program in 2007, pissed because he wasn't offered the job and RR was hired, he has never tried to make amends. I believe he holds that grudge yet today. That combined with the desire to make NFL $$, win a Super Bowl and stay in the bay area, will keep him there.

Les is likely not going to get a call, I believe Hackett was ruling Les out with his 'no corner cutting' statement.

Dan Mullen or Big Game Bob Stoops would be my personal top two.

Pinkel, Cameron, Malzahn, Beilema, Shaw would be options that wouldn't be disappointing.

Not sure about Richt, Mora, Whittingham...

That's just my opinion...

Why is Friday significant?

If the job goes to someone other than Miles, Mullen, Stoops or Harbaugh w/o all 4 of these guys turning it down it will be frustrating.

We don't need to find a diamond in the rough or an up and coming coordinator. we are talking about the winningest program in CFB and one of the top revenue producers.

We should not have to settle for a tier 2 coach.

"winningest program in CFB" it's not a selling tool anymore unfortunately. That's in the past and we need to move forward. Michigan football has been irrelevant for past 9 years or so and if this administration doesn't hire the right coach this time and get Michigan football back on right track soon, Michigan won't be the winningest program rather the Mockery program. I remember the glory days of Michigan being dominant but unfortunately this new generation only heard about it but has yet to experience it and if it's not corrected soon we can kiss top recruits goodbye and mediocry will be the norm.

the fact that we can't compete with ohio or msu, the fact that we are a mediocre big ten team, the fact that we've lost more commits than we've kept in the past 7 years... This hire has to be a slam dunk, the next coach needs to be one of the top coaching talents in football.

Rutgers and Maryland were going to weaken the Big Ten's already declining image, people said.... yeah, we get to watch them play in Bowl games while we look for Brady Hoke's replacement. INSANE!!!

It's a damn shame that it's been left to this, but it must stop here.

It would seem to me that there is a process to this hiring of the next coach that we can't overlook. If Hackett is telling the truth, then he has hired a firm to vet Michigan's coaching candidates. That would most likely mean that Michigan's top brass hasn't met with or spoken with anyone yet, it would be the firm.

Usually the process would look something like this...the firm would list candidates and rate them (probably with the input from the Michigan brass) and the firm would be the one to reach out and explore their interest or lack thereof. In some cases the concern about "tempering" with various coaches because they're still under contract and may still be coaching because their season is not over, would more tactfully let the firm do the dirty work.

If there is an interest then there would be phone interviews, and then first found interviews between the candidates with their agents and the firm's representatives. Sometimes, if the coaches are still in their season, the meetings may be between the agent and the firm, therefore, no tampering.

Then the firm would vet those candidates that fit the criteria with the brass and then there would likely be a second round interview with the Michigan brass.

The brass would eventually compare notes, make their decision based upon what they've seen and heard and rate their interviews and candidates and then they would make an offer to their highest rated candidate first and if it works out, great! If not then they go to the next candidate and so forth.

Also keeping in mind the little things that effects a candidates thinking like, the school's history of tolerating struggling seasons, how difficult is it to win at that place, what former coaches say about that place, how the candidate's family feel about the move and if he can get out of his contract with minimal damage, and if there are other offers that are more competitive and attractive and so forth...and of course, the money. IMHO!!!

No way JH comes out and nixes the UM job until he finds out what his NFL chances are. He still wants to coach in the NFL, that is a given, but his reputation might be slipping south. Why would he come out and say NO to UM if that ends up being one of his few options he would take. Maybe there will be a ton of NFL teams that want him...but does he want to go to them over going to UM? He will be a winner at UM, but I doubt he can say the same at every NFL team that might want him.
