Michigan Monday: Getting DPJ To Ann Arbor

The Nike Opening has come and gone now and it's officially down time before the season starts.  Michigan has one big last recruiting weekend which is a RR hold over called the BBQ at the Big House which should take place in a couple of weeks.

One of the guys that made a ton of noise early at the Opening was 6'2 and 195 pound Michigan WR Donovan Peoples-Jones who is only a Junior at Cass Tech.   He was crowned the Openings best athlete with a SPAQ score of 149.49.

DPJ has a good shot at being a 5 star recruit when everything is said and done with the 2017 class.  Exactly what Michigan needs right?  A 6'2 athletic WR that goes to a strong Michigan HS at Cass Tech.

So does Michigan have a real shot at landing this talented WR?
The answer is yes, but Donovan's recruitment is far from over.   He has been in Ann Arbor a number of times already and in East Lansing as well.   He has taken a couple trips to C-Bus and was just out in LA to see USC.   He also has a trip scheduled to visit Florida later this month.  Some insiders feel he is Buckeye lean at the moment.

So what will it take to get Donovan committed to Michigan?

Here is my best guess:

  • A strong passing game next year
  • Convinced Michigan's system and coaching staff will get him to the NFL
  • Close to home doesn't hurt for family and friends coming to games
  • A future Wolverine QB he connects with
I believe many WR's want to see how what Michigan's system will look like under Jimmy before jumping on board.  For a 2017 recruit he has the luxury of time to see the Wolverines in action for a year and maybe two.

Let's hope Jimmy has laid some strong groundwork here and continues to get him in Ann Arbor for games this fall.

  • Speaking of future QB's:  I was a bit surprised to learn that that John O'Korn was invited to participate as a coach at the Manning Passing Academy this past weekend.  This is his second year being a coach/counselor at the camp.  As you know, Devin Gardner has also helped out at that camp in the past.  Whispers out of summer player only work outs is John maybe the best QB on the roster right now.   As you know, John is a transfer from Houston and will have to sit out a year before he can play for the Wolverines.
