Michigan Monday: A 2 Commit Weekend

Recruiting is an interesting business.   You could be recruiting and leading for a prospect for two years and they pick another program on their announcement date.  There are other prospects that you recruit for a couple of weeks, they realize the opportunity and jump at the offer.

The latter happened this weekend when Tennessee Slot WR Nate Johnson committed to Michigan.   Nate is a 5'11 175 pound slot WR who Michigan has only been recruiting for a couple of weeks.   Nate was a Purdue commit and mostly had offers from FCS schools.    Then he had a very nice senior year with the likes of 87 catches, 1713 yards and 27 touchdowns on the way to a state title.   Those stats got noticed from a number of major programs and the likes of Miami, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vandy, Temple and Northwestern.   You can tell with those offers he is a good student.

When you blow up during your senior year, its hard for recruiting services to catch up.   24/7 has him ranked as a 4 star all the other services has him as a 3 (minus Scouts which don't have him ranked at all).    The book on him is he has good hands and really good "football speed" to get open.   He of course is not 6'4 and never will be.

This probably ends Michigan's recruitment of Pie Young from Florida and will leave maybe one open spot for the likes of Corley, Crawford or Stewart.

  • LaVert Hill took his official to A2 this weekend.   I think Michigan's lead with him is in flux still due to the loss of DJ Durkin.  He will take UCLA and USC visit.

  • Jean Delance a big OL prospect from Texas who also visited this weekend tweeted out to the Michigan fans that "we will see you soon"

Michigan also received a 2017 commit from Jeremiah Holloman a WR from GA.  He is 6'3 and 200 pounds and ranked 3 stars from Rivals, he is also a teammate for 2017 commitment RB Kurt Taylor.
Holloman's early offer list included the likes of Vandy, Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana and Cincinnati.

The reason we don't have clarity yet on Michigan's DC offer to Stanford's Lance Anderson is because he is a candidate for BYU's head coaching job.   Navy's head coach is also a candidate.  I'm sure Lance is waiting to find out if he got that job before giving Jimmy as answer.

Nate Johnson's WR senior season highlight film is the best WR film I've seen since Treadwell was in High School. I came away VERY impressed.
