Michigan Tuesday: Mr. Washington Goes Elsewhere

I have always been pulling for Keith Washington.   He was one of Jimmy's first recruits and a guy out of Alabama.  I remember a story that Jimmy visited his school and asked him if he was really was that fast as his 40 time stated?  Keith responded, I am coach and will run it right now in the parking lot if you like.   I'm sure Jimmy loved that and Keith signed with the Wolverines as a CB.

Keith has made it known he intends to transfer from Michigan.  I thought he had a great chance to play this fall and also looked good in the Spring Game.    The CB positon is still up for grabs and their position coach Mike Zordich seems a bit worried:

How are those young corners coming along?
“Not fast enough.” [/laughs] “Not fast enough. They show flashes. I’ll say this: Lavert has, since his injury, he’s been pretty consistent and you can see him increasing every day and getting better. The other guys, they’ve shown flashes. They just need to grab it. Somebody’s got to grab it and run with it and take it. It’s just not happening. Hopefully somebody will in the next five to seven days because we’ve got to get ready for a game in less than two weeks.”

Is anyone closer? Do you feel like anyone’s making more flashes than someone else?
“No.”

He even mentions Keith:

Is Keith [Washington] still working just at corner?
“He’s been corner, playing corner mostly, but in other packages you could see him in different spots.”

I wonder if the "other packages" were the ones that pushed Keith to transfer.

The timing on this transfer seems a bit off.  We are less then two weeks from start of the season and the CB situation seems fluid at best.   I think Keith would of gotten some playing time and could even had been a starter in a couple games.   Even though Michigan has a ton of young corners, this has to be seen has a hit to the depth chart.   I saw Keith at CB, Nickel or maybe even Safety in a year or two.  Jimmy's first two recruits from Alabama have transferred out of the program in less then two years (Kingston Davis and Keith Washington).

  • Jean Delance who announced he was transferring from Texas earlier this month, will play at Florida for the rest of the college career.  Jean was down to Michigan and Texas out of high school.

  • Peppers played well in the return game last night in Cleveland.  Seems like he is a lock to start the year at safety and do punt and kick off returns.

  • Michigan is ranked #11 in the preseason AP poll.
