Michigan Friday: Jimmy Pens Open Letter

When I think of Jimmy, I think of this verse from an old Billy Joel song:

♪ You may be right
I may be crazy
But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for
Turn out the light
Don't try to save me
You may be wrong for all I know
But you may be right ♪

Hell yes I wish Michigan would win more football games and beat Ohio State once every 5 years (at least!) or so but the late Lee Iacocca might have said it the best, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way".   Jimmy is trying to lead and it's making an impact.

Jimmy did something similar a year ago, saying that all kids should have one transfer available to them without penalty.   The NCAA is now reviewing that and that might take effect later this summer.

To summarize Jimmy's latest letter:

  • Players can go pro if they are ready after 1 year of playing college football.   For example why is Trevor Lawrence still at Clemson?
  • Players should have greater access to the NFL, agents, and lawyers to determine their Pro potential.
  • Players not drafted with eligibility left can return to the college football
  • Players entering the draft early, can still have scholarship options at the school he left
  • He also continues to support the 5 year rule and getting rid of redshirting

I don't love the one and done rule  and think kids should stay for at least 2 seasons in college football.  Though I do understand Jimmy's point but only a few elite prospects should be affected.  My fear is that too many players would think they are ready, sign with an agent, and close the door on college football way too early.

The rest of the rules make sense to me.  The return if your not drafted is clearly aimed at Sean McKeon who left early with a season to play and didn't get drafted.

Got a text from a Columbus area code - says, "I'm busy today with typos and selling penny stocks, please tell Blog 'Fire Jim & Don'. Thanks, and go Bucks, I mean Blue"

Great comment Goblue!

I could be wrong, but the way I ready Jimmy's tweet was that players not drafted came come back to college, finish their degree on schools dime but they cannot play football. That would change the dynamic.

With college players potentially getting paid soon and chasing dollars it would make sense to allow them to enter draft quicker. I agree, Bob, that there is a big risk that many will leave too early and be out of football in a year or two, but if that is what they want to do...I believe stopping them will get harder and harder.

If a kid leaves early that is not suppose to... than him, his parents, the professors, the coaches, and the girls have all failed him terribly and he is most likely a selfish or shallow fool that does not know what hard work is and can accomplish... good day to those that cannot see opportunity and make way for ones that will.... Go Blue!

I was going to respond to an earlier comment about what JH meant in a tweet. But I first have to say;

The BigHouseBlog's resident clown is back and making his usual hysterical demands about the firing of JH. I think he forgot about DB!

>However, if the individual is not drafted within the first 224 picks of the NFL Draft, he would be able to return to college football if he chooses without penalty, provided he remains in academic compliance and does not receive payment from an agent.

IMO, Harbaugh's proposal would allow someone to return to college football (and play!).

Didn't he know we got his text earlier today so there was no need to return. I expect nothing less from bucknutsboy.

BucknutMan, it's not that we're pretending we've won a championship. And of course, none of us are pleased with the results. But the laundry list of coaches you suggest isn't serious. So if you want to have a serious discussion on alternatives, let's start that. But Urban Meyers (OSU 50% acceptance rate) isn't coming. Riley (OU 74%) isn't coming. Edwards (ASU 84%) is old and isn't coming. Coaches that can bring in great athletes to universities that accept almost anyone, will not go to an academically difficult school like Mich (24%). It's a bad business decision, as they won't make more money coming to Michigan, but their job will be harder.

So, by all means, please suggest someone who could replace Harbaugh, who actually will come, and who wouldn't see firing Jim (the favorite son) with his 75% winning record as a huge red flag.

If you don't want to send a serious list, no worries. But just saying "fire Jim" without proposing a solution, means your just a whiner. And that's why guys here make fun of you (that and you're really a buckeye fan).
