Minnesota Post Game: Lack of Adjustments

Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Michigan the last 3 years have been elite in a number or areas.  Halftime adjustments might be the best thing the coaches did every game.  Even when Michigan had a lazy first half, I would know that Michigan was a 2nd half team and the coaches would put the Wolverines in a position to win coming out of the locker room.

Not this year and I'm pretty sure Michigan has gotten out coached in every 2nd half this season.  PJ Fleck did it to them today.  That frankly is embarrassing.  Sherrone has a problem and the problem is his staff not being able to adjust to the game.   It feels very Hokeish.

There are reason for this.  Michigan is very basic on offense and if they don't knock down a defensive lineman and Mullins hits the hole, they are in trouble.    That 3rd down call late in the 4th quarter where Mullins lost yards, was as basic as basic gets.

The jury is still out on Orji in my mind, he threw better but not great, and missed a wide open Donovan Edwards when he threw the pick.  If he is not going to run for more than 12 yards, then what are we doing?

Cheers:
  • Mullins is the offense with 111 yards
  • Michigan increased its passing yards to 86
  • Blocked punt and fumble won the game for the Wolverines
  • Mullins and Edwards backfield
  • 5 sacks
  • Ernie is playing better every game
  • Zvada another solid game
  • Hill with a great pick

Jeers:
  • No Will or Stewart
  • Rain
  • 2nd Half
  • 2 calls that almost cost Michigan the game
    • The Mason hands to the face was a BS call by the refs
    • #5 the transfer WR was a holding and erased a sure TD
  • Edwards had 34 yards
  • Orji pick flipped momentum
  • I just don't understand what Wink is doing sometimes
  • Kenny is held every snap
  • That looked  like a junior set of officials
  • Non-stop Commercials are undefeated
Michigan played in the rain without their top pass rusher and cover corner.  They didn't play "clean" and it almost cost them the game.  The circus at the end with the onside kick and bad snap is by a team that doesn't believe it themselves.  They played with confidence for nearly 3 quarters, Orji throws a pick and the team packed it in.

This won't be a popular statement but Michigan needs to see what Jack Tuttle has.  Michigan has to be able to execute at a higher level on offense to win football games.  Mostly when we know Wink is going to Wink out a few times a game.

A win is a win and I would rather the team work on issues after a win then losing the Little Brown Jug and doing the same.

Sorry Wolverine Nation: Sherrone Moore ain't the guy. This team isn't well coached. The 1st onside kick: too many guys thought they were spectators. And for anyone that wants to use the officiating excuse, we caught a huge break on that offsides call on the onside kick. That was sketchy as hell! Why is Orji snapping the ball with 9 seconds left on the play clock on that final FG drive. Coaching! Moore and his staff are substandard. Hey Warde, wake the F up and start backdoor connecting for our next coach. Oh btw: Wisky 21-10 over SC at the half. Maybe USC just sucks. I already didn't see Michigan standing a chance against Oregon and OSU, but we could lose to Illinois and Indiana as well! If half the team wasn't dead, lil' brother might beat us as well!

And Bob: I'd try the water boy at QB over Orji. He has no decision making ability. To me, it looks like he's predetermined what he's doing with the ball, whether it be in the passing game or read option. Who's the damn QB coach on this team now? Is it still Kirk Campbell or did they give that to someone else when he was made OC. Btw, playing calling is suspect as hell. There's nothing innovative with the play calling. If that's because of Orji, then see my first comment. Moore knew what he had and stayed pat when it come to the portal.

For what it’s worth, many people said Jimmy wasn’t the coach, until he was. I think it’s pretty tough to judge a coach after 4 games. I don’t love the 4th quarter of that game - and that’s 100% on wink. We obviously all know the challenges that our offense presents. I don’t see Michigan getting better until we have a real qb. And that’s st least 1 season away - probably longer. But, I also don’t see how you in reality you run a scheme with Orji as qb.

We win with no real qb so Moore is better than we think. Tuttle is hurt and Davis is not ready. Wink will only last a year if the defense continues to under achieve as a result of his poor game plan and in game assessments.

It saddens me to agree that you are almost 100% right in your assessment. Bob brought up the Hoke comparison, and that are running quarterback was good for 12 yards. I cannot add to any of this except we knew there would be a period of adjustment and bit of a rough patch .... but I did not see the bridge was out and now were headed to the bottom of the abyss.

Stop. He didn't take advantage of the portal. And his team makes too many mental mistakes. Whether its his staff or him its on him
If Indi-fucking-ana can find a QB in the portal so should michigan. Davis Warren is D2 or D3 QB and Orji isn't even a QB

Win against who. Fresno st? Arkansas st? Minnesota? Oh a USC team who was trailing at half time at home against one of the 4 worst teams in the B1G, starting a backup QB cause the regular starter died! He's way over his skis. Just answer this question: did you have this much faith in RichRod

This team doesn't have the same drive, and "kill" instinct as last year. But they're a new OC, with a new OL. Also a new DC, new HC, and new position coaches. Yes, they're sloppy. Yes, the offense looks horrible at times. How there isn't a better overall QB? Blows my mind. But they're team has what they have, and it's been proven at this point. 8-4 was a solid "rebuild" season (thought we shouldn't be rebuilding, as Bama proved tonight.) We saw possible losses to Texas, USC, Oregon and OSU. Got 1 win against that 4, so now 9-3? Is it Playoff worthy? No.
As the team, and coaches, get more comfortable and players are actually healthy that we need? 10-2 isn't out of the picture. RichRod was given shit, and built every year. It was just too slow. Hoke won with RichRod's guys, and collapsed after that. I hope Moore doesn't follow in Hoke's footsteps, cause we were set back for years

"Michigan needs to see what Jack Tuttle has" or bring Warren back, Orji is not the answer in having a running quarterback that's not productive as a runner nor, as everyone can see, a passer. Yes Warren needs to take better control of the ball, has thrown 6 interceptions over 3 games of which half were not his fault, but needless to say without a passing attack any wins this season will all be hard fought with limited (and questionable) play calling, unable to consistently move the chains, leaving a shallow defensive line more time to wear down in the second half, which results in what we've all seen thus far.

A loss to a team not named Oregon or OSU and I'd give Jayden Davis a whirl. What's Tuttle going to do for you? He's not a long
term solution, this has to be his last year eligibility? Think Davis Warren is done after this year too. Give JD some run and see if he's got anything, cause if he doesn't then hit the portal hard for a QB

Play calling won't change if Tuttle is qb. Sherrone will still run student body left and student body right.

I thought Orji played pretty well. His pick hit the receiver in the numbers and was wrestled away by the defender. Orji had a couple good throws dropped, too.

Need better pass protectectuon. Orji was forced to throw quick or scramble often.

Brady that ball needed to be thrown to the outside, not the inside. the coverage was to the inside with no outside help. that's his problem, he can't throw anyone open. and you saw when it came to pucker time, they took the ball out of his hands. it was going to be win or lose on the legs of Mullins. Minnesota should have been a gimme. There's only one more gimme on the schedule and that's Northwestern, maybe MSU if the keep losing players for the season every game. That horse bleep ain't beating Illinois or Indiana. We'll see what this team is made of when the travel to Seattle for a night game. Washington sucks but its Michigan's first road game and not sure if this team can travel!

You're right Bob. They showed Moore at one point in the second half, as Michigan's lead was evaporating, and he looked bewildered. It was a look that i haven't seen on a Michigan coach's face in 11 years. He had the same look that Brady Hoke used to have when things were going bad.
