Michigan Friday: Transfer Portal Updates and the CFP

The more I watch the CFP the angrier I get about Michigan's situation this year.  If the Wolverines had a functional QB from the portal they would've been in the mix.   There is not one team in this year's playoff that Michigan could not have beaten with a functional QB.   I know that sounds like the most "homer" statement ever (which it is), but it's also accurate.  Hell, half those teams don't want to play the Michigan team that showed up at the former Outback this week.

  • ND lost to a bad MAC team at home.  A bad MAC team.
  • PSU got manhandled by Ohio State and Oregon
  • OSU, well we all know what happened there
  • Texas has been inconsistent all year.  Even though they did embarrass the Wolverines at home.
I think Michigan has a case against everyone but probably Texas.  Who proved they were better.
Again the caveat is, Michigan has a competent QB.

I know it's water under the bridge and we must move on.

Side note, great job seeding the tournament Warde.  Your final four is: 7 vs. 6 seeds and 8 vs 5.
  • I know I'm in the minority on this but I think Round 1 should be played indoors or at warmer location.
  • The byes hurt the lower seeds as each team lost and were clearly rusty.
  • Penn State's path to the semifinal is laughable.  Beating SMU and Boise is a decent non-conference schedule.
  • I just hope we see some good football played in a week.  These games have been hard to watch.
Transfer portal updates:
  • There has been a bit of concern that Bama RB transfer Justice Haynes has not been offically signed.  Word is, it was an administrative thing (not admissions) and he is expected to be signed and in Ann Arbor very soon.
  • Seems there is Buzz around UConn WR Bell becoming a Wolverine.   I watched him in the a bowl game and he looks solid.
  • Yale WR David Pantelis is visiting Ann Arbor this weekend.  He had 69 catches for 1018 yards and 11 TD's last season.  Too bad, Danny Wolf is in LA playing USC this weekend.
  • There is some buzz that Michigan is also talking with Clemson WR Troy Stellato.
  • UNLV CB Tony Grimes is off the table for Michigan as he committed to Purdue.  Michigan maybe in on Pitt CB Ryland Gandy.
  • Michigan Freshman DE Owen Wafle has entered the portal.  Word is, he didn't think the Michigan DL Coaches were Wafle makers.  😀
  • Michigan backup DB Kody Jones also entered the portal on Thursday.
  • Michigan Team Captain and long time Michigan Safety, Makari Paige announced he is heading to the NFL Draft.  Good Luck to him!

So I had been pretty harsh on Makari Paige, especially the beginning of the season. Thought he took bad angles and was out of position a lot of the time. He also seem to let up when blitzing. That being said, he looked to turn it around toward the end of the season. There was a time I was very critical of Josh Metellus for a lot of the same reasons. But by the time he left Michigan I thought he had become a very solid safety. Josh has gone on to blossom in the NFL and is a HUGE part of the Minnesota D. Though he hasn't play at a really high level for that long, maybe Makari can have the same type of development when he gets to the league. Good Luck!

Is it bad that I'm kinda over the CFP? The opening round games were ass and the 2nd round games weren't much better. Texas/ASU was entertaining, but it took Texas and Quin Ewers to do their normal sleep walk thru part of the game for ASU to comeback. PSU/Boise St wasn't close as the score indicated, OSU blew Oregon's doors off, and the ND/Georgia game wasn't that good either. Now maybe that's cause I JUST HATE ND, former in-laws golden domers and all! Should of never expanded it past 4 teams

I agree with you in terms of getting angry as Michigan dominated Ohio State and Alabama. Now you say if we had a QB, but I disagree because if we had a competent coach we would be in the playoffs. Davis should have been benched for 3 picks and then you work with him and put a safe game plan together with dinks and dunks and the run game, but you benched him and started Orji - he's not a QB. No, Davis is not a top level QB, but Sherone was and still is in over his head. We blame Campbell, but it's all on the head coach. Against Oregon down by 11 and you have Semaj throw a pass? You continue to bring in Orji on stupid plays? Again, that's called basic coaching. How about a TO to help Alabama who had no TO's left? A trick play in the rain? How about willing Donovan Edwards to be RB1? Get him his carries but Mullins was the #1. Again, these are basic things that anyone can do and yet Sherone couldn't. Does he not want to hurt players feelings? Why was Orji playing against Alabama when he's in the portal? Jadyn Davis doesn't want to hand the ball off? You tell him not to travel with the team! Be a leader not a baby sitter. Sherone will not get fired in 3 years as Michigan is paying and we will be competitive. Hopefully our new OC is good and Sherone can get out of the way. Sorry I am venting and Sherone's a great guy and cutting his teeth on being the head coach at Michigan.

I agree with you on the expansion past four.. It was just crazy to do it this way. However if you find 10 people and ask them to pick the 12 teams they think should be in the playoff they would most likely all be within a few teams of one another. Still though let's go back to the 4 team playoff.

Can you really judge a Ivy league WR, by his stats?

I kinda thought the same thing. But then I thought about Danny Wolf. I know it's a different sport.....
