Michigan Thursday: 2 More Guys Hit The Portal

Before we get started, Hello Friends.  Enjoy the Masters this weekend! The only weekend its ok for  Wolverine fans to wear green.

Michigan had 1 football player and 1 basketball player jump into the portal on Wednesday.

Phat Phat is gone gone - I'm a bit torn on this departure.   The old man in me thinks, this kid is nowhere near developed and he should stay and compete.  The other side says, Michigan has a 5 star guard coming in and a high level point guard.  He is going to be buried on the bench and probably should look for other opportunities.   Either way good luck to him.

I know this is disrespectful to a youngman, but when you hear a Michigan Football Player has entered the draft and your first reaction is, who?  You feel pretty good that player is making the right decision to look for playing time at another school.  Alessandro Lorenzetti is a former 3-star recruit that has been jumping between the offensive and defensive lines and decided to hit the portal.  He clearly has been looking for a path for playing time in Ann Arbor and it just hasn't worked out.   Good luck to Alessandro!

  • Kenny Grant is an interesting prospect for NFL Teams. He is talented and could be a 1st rounder or drop to day 2.  If I'm a GM, I wouldn't sleep on Kenny.

If Grant is there at 28 and the Lions keep the pick I wouldn't hate it if they picked him.

Take Grant in the first round if available, then work out a one year deal with Za'Darius Smith who hasn't signed with anyone yet. Get whatever is higher on the board between IOL or DE in the second round.

I can live with that. But would Z come back? Sometimes pride gets in the way! Afterall, the Lions basically said "we don't think you're worth the money"! I get it, it's a business, nothing personal, but some players don't see it that way!

As far as Phat Phat, he committed to another regime. He stayed to see how things would turned out, and obviously it wasn't what he wanted. Problem with college basketball now, unless you're some sure NBA lottery pick that has to do something for 1 year after HS before you can enter the draft, I think a lot of these lessor players are going to have to prove themselves in smaller programs then hit the portal. I think the blue blood programs and want-to-be blue bloods are going to choose TP players over most HS recruits. Pitino at St Johns has said so much. He's not even recruiting HS kids, he's putting his team together solely from the TP. More of a plug in play arrangement. The days of an Izzo having 4 years to break a kid down so he can build him up are over.

Chowman, I am not an analyst. But the news articles say that Smith has no animosity toward the Lions and does really want a ring. If there is no multi year contract on the table and he continues to go unsigned the odds improve by the day.

Victor, unless someone comes to the table with a big multi-year deal, I see Smith pulling a Suh. Waiting until the season starts and then going to a contender that needs that extra DL, whether due to injury or lack of performance. As long as he stays in shape, there's no need for someone at his age to go thru OTAs or camp and put more mileage on his body!
