Post Game New Mexico OverUnderWood

Jacob Hamilton/mlive.com/TNS

Michigan came out of the tunnel on Saturday night firing on all cylinders.  The Bryce Underwood era took off and so did Michigan's new star RB Justice Hayes.  To top it off, Marlin Klein looks to be the next great Michigan TE.

After a fast start the game did get a little close for comfort until Bryce threw a dime to legacy WR Goodwin to take a comfortable lead to halftime.  New Mexico scored on a very cool trick play and then had a completely replay assisted TD drive that started with a Michigan sack and fumble return for a TD but turned into 7 points for the Lobos.   That type of shenanigans is the reason we do Cheers and Jeers!

Cheers:
  • Bryce is the real deal.  He just turned 18 and was not scared of the game or the situation.  He throws fastballs and seems to make the right reads.  He will make mistakes but tonight was a great start.
  • Justice Hayes is a very good RB and great addition to this team!
  • I thought the WR's played pretty well last night, love seeing Goodwin and Morgan get involved and McCulley is just what Michigan has needed in a big WR.
  • I thought Chip Lindsey called a nice game as an OC.  Spread them out and run the ball is something I have been yelling from my couch for 5 years!
  • Nate Marshall is coming to sack a QB near you!
  • Cole Sullivan had a pick and a Sack!
  • Zvada is so good!
  • Marlin Klein had his breakout game!
Jeers:
  • Return game was pretty bad.  Marsh fumbled one and Morgan muffed one and didn't catch another punt all night.
  • After the Barham QB hit, I thought they were going to rule the QB down and not a fumble.  I did not expect they were going to throw him out of the game.  Terrible call when the hit was face mask to face mask.
  • That same drive, a New Mexico WR clearly drops the ball out of bounds and replay didn't stop the play.  New Mexico got an entire TD drive on bad ref calls.
  • I thought the Offensive Line was just OK.  Sprague struggled a bit at tackle.
  • The defense let NM stay around way too long and that was due to playing the entire defensive roster.
  • Freddie Moore had a bad drop
  • Marsh had a tough game for a freshman, fumbled a kickoff and wasn't watching as Bryce targeted him.  He will be better!

Michigan didn't cover and the defense gave up way too many yards and points to the Lobo's.   With all that said, Michigan's future offense looks bright.    The officials need to be better.  First thing I thought after the targeting call, was Michigan needs to appeal that to the Big Ten office.  Sherrone thought the same thing and mentioned that in his press conference.

It was pretty and wasn't pretty at times during the game.  New Mexico is not bad and ran some innovated trick plays.  The Lobo's head coach is going places and that team will win some games this year.  I understand playing guys on defense to see what you have, but damn there was a ton of people out there on defense.  Too many.

It's a W and on to Norman next weekend, when this team will have to step up another notch.  I expect they will!

So- first, apologies to Bob for joking about the IA score! They are a scoring machine!

Targeting call has to/must be reversed. That was a terrible call. So was the obv drop non-call. But, wink can’t let these kids get in their heads and allow a TD. That spiral of a series is on Wink.

The TD before half was crucial to avoid a bigger spiral. Bryce will make mistakes, but he’s a composed and solid young man.

First, I'm the last person to complain about officiating. I just feel that stuff has a tendency to balance out. But the Barham hit was a travesty. If that's effing targeting, then let's just end the sport. it shouldn't of even been roughing the passer. Barham was going to make a play and Lane was falling back to try and make a play. The fact that we have to play the 1st half against Oklahoma without Barham is bullshit.

As for the rest of the game. I thought Bryce was up and down. he made some really good throws and he also made some bad throws, i.e. throwing balls where he shouldn't of tried to throw them. it's hard to tell watching TV, but I thought on the one throw to Kline, Morgan was open for a bigger play, but that's getting nit picky. All in all, this probably what we're going to see from a true freshman QB. Some holy shit throws and some WTF throws.

It's really hard to gauge from one game, especially since New Mexico brought in 75 new players. Is New Mexico any good or are they going to be dog bleep? For the defense, it looks to me if the front 7 can get pressure on the QB, the secondary will be fine, if not, it could make for a long afternoon or evening. That TE for New Mexico seem to be open all night long.

Special teams, i.e. punt and kick returns are concerning. The muff and the fumble can't happen. I was at a point I was hoping either Morgan or Marsh didn't even try to return kicks. Just make the fair catch or the touch back. Is it just me or does it seem like ages ago when Michigan had a good return game?

Very disappointed in the defense I expected a better performance. I think the secondary needs work they seem to be playing way too much zone
