Michigan Friday: Legacy Recruits - It's Important

With the long recruiting "dead period" over coaches from every program in the US hit the streets yesterday to talk to recruits.   The Wolverines coaches mostly focused their efforts on players from the 2015 class.

The first player Coach Nuss visited is 5 star Michigan verbal commit RB Damien Harris in Kentucky.   Damien is currently Michigan's top recruit in the class and there have been some "rumblings" he is considering other schools.   Let's hope Coach Nuss helped Damien stay Blue.

Greg Mattison was also out and about in the Detroit area on Thursday.  He stopped by MLK High School and offered 2015 LB Tyriq Thompson.  (Get ready to feel old alert!!)  Tyriq is the son of former Wolverine Clarence Thompson and is currently a 3 star prospect to Rivals.  Tyriq has offers from MSU, IU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, NC State and Pitt.

Most had believe Tyriq was close to committing to MSU before GMatt stopped by on Thursday and gave him his Michigan offer.   The Wolverines have offered him at Will LB.  Michigan still has ground to make up in Tyriq's recruitment but has to be considered a favorite with his Dad's love for the Wolverines:

"I think it’s great that he has the opportunity to continue the legacy. Tyriq knows that I’m Maize and Blue through and through, but ultimately he has to make a decision that’s best for him for the following four years.” I also took the opportunity to ask Clarence what stuck with him as a former student-athlete at Michigan that he would promote to any recruit, his son included. “First and foremost the tradition and respect that comes along with being a Michigan football player. The family atmosphere and supportive community is unmatched"

If Tyriq ultimately decides to join the Wolverines 2015 class he would join legacy commit Jon Runyan Jr.  Michigan is also recruiting Tyrone Wheatley's son, who is a 4 star TE or DE out of Buffalo.

  • Manny being Manny alert!  Manny Harris is averaging over 30 points a game this year in the D League.  He was signed to a 10 day contract to the Lakers and will make $52,000.

  • Minnesota's starting QB Phillip Nelson is transferring.

  • Jeremy Gallon is playing in in the draft.

  • Marlon Mack 3 star RB from Florida who the Wolverines have recently contacted, de-committed from UCLA on Thursday.  He is visiting Louisville this weekend.  Michigan hasn't offered yet.  Update Twitter Oops!:   2014 RB Marlon Mack RT YESTERDAY WAS A GOOD DAY, GOT OFFERED FROM MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY 💙💛
Just when I thought U of M had a good shot, MU beat us in his recruitment! :)
