Michigan Tuesday: A RB Recruiting Reverse

It seemed Michigan was set on taking RB in the 2014 class.   As the Wolverines sit right now, they really don't need a RB with two high profile freshman becoming sophomores and Drake Johnson probably getting a medical redshirt from last year which would make him a year 3 freshman next year.

Running Back is similar to Quarterback in you probably want at least one in every recruiting class.   Michigan had recently offered two new guys in Jones and Mack and was even trying to re-recruit Ballage when it seemed the Michigan staff made a decision to not take a RB in this class.

So what happened?

We don't know but here are a few educated guesses:

  • There has been a ton of smoke that Damien Harris was about to de-commit from Michigan.  It started when George Campbell jumped and then when Big Al was fired.  Big Al didn't recruit a ton but had a close relationship with Damien.  Coach Nuss used his first visit on Damien as soon as the dead period ended.  Michigan is also expected to be in Damien's school again next week.  Is this Michigan showing their commitment to Damien by not taking a RB in this class? Harris is staying quiet at the moment and not talking to the media.   Update:  Damien Harris has de-committed from Michigan this morning.  His mom says Michigan is still #1 but he wants to go through the recruiting process.  So not taking a RB in 2014 doesn't make much sense at all.

  • The Michigan staff feels there is a need for the scholarship at an another position.

  • The Michigan coaches want to bank it for the small 2015 class.

  • We will never know but there could have been some transcript issues.

I'm not a big fan of banking scholarships because I think that could hurt your overall depth (even though it's nice to reward a walk-on).   If this is true, Michigan's only person on the board right now is Malik McDowell and we know that recruitment is anything but a done deal.   I imagine that the Michigan coaches have a few Plan B's in the works for signing day.  Tomorrow marks 2 weeks before signing day (the highest traffic day here at BHB every year)

  • OSU has lost 4 games in a row, last night to Nebraska.

  • Coach Nuss just offered 2015 QB Jarrett Stidham and 2015 RB Johnny Frasier.

  • Mike Hart will be WMU's RB coach this year.

  • Sounds like Coach Nuss has also brought a young coach with him from Alabama:  John Van Dam will be Michigan's new offensive quality control assistant.

Harris de-committed today. A little while back we were sitting pretty with the best WR & RB committed for 2015. Now we have nothing. Seems like recently we can get in on the top recruits but we can't seem to close. Treadwell, Hand, Garnett, Isaac, now Harris & Campbell. Thank god that Peppers appears to be staying.

As a guy who blogs about Michigan, could you please do a little research.

Since Drake Johnson VOLUNTARILY RS last year, he won't be able to get a medical RS this year.

The only way he will get another RS year is if he gets injured again or he RS freshmen year cause he was injured and they have documented proof of that.

It would be kinda nice to see Mike Hart gain a few seasons experience in Kalamazoo and get a chance to come home to A2!!

Eric you seem like a pretty smart guy, so I'm surprised you didn't know that a player could ask for a medical redshirt even though he already took a redshirt year, when he is injured so early in the year. He redshirted in 2012 got injured in 2013. That would make one red shirt year and if he applies for it a sure medical redshirt year.
