Michigan Friday: Mitch Goes To NBA and Other Bad Things

I love being a Michigan fan but there are days, weeks, and moments it's really to hard hang in there.  Today is another one of those days.

Mitch McGary is going to the NBA.   The reason is not because he is ready or he is healed from his back injury, it's because he has been suspended from the NCAA for one year for testing positive for marijuana.

One night in mid-March, with the NCAA tournament about to begin without him, McGary was hanging out with a group of friends at Michigan. He had a few drinks. Someone offered some marijuana – a common occurrence, he said, on campus.

"I always turned it down," McGary told Yahoo Sports. "But that night I didn't."

Mitch didn't fail a U of M drug test he failed a random test during the NCAA Tournament, which requires a year long suspension.   Talk about making a decision for you.

"It's just with the NCAA and their strict rules, they don't show any mercy," McGary said. "They take their things seriously."

"[That's why] this was a surprise," Beilein told Yahoo Sports on Thursday evening. "This is not Mitch McGary. Not the one I know

If Mitch had failed a U of M test he would have been suspended for probably 3 games.   He failed an NCAA test and that requires him to sit out a full year.   (which they just changed to a half season)

So he is off the NBA, a kid with a back problem and now a year long suspension for testing positive for a recreational drug.    I'm really at a loss for words.   This seems like lose - lose - lose (Mitch - NBA - U of M) for everyone involved.

NCAA having a year long ban, but wait they just made it a half a year for a drug that is completely legal in two states and medically legal in many more, is crazy.    I'm not saying Mitch, should of done it but the crime doesn't seem to fit the punishment (a year or a 1/2 a year).

Next year is now a complete mess down low, with nothing but freshman.   Jon Horford really must have not like Coach Beilein's offense.  I don't see any reason why he should have transferred, he could have played 40 minutes a game as a 5th year senior.
