Wolverine Wednesday: Jedd Fisch Weighs In On QB Battle

Were all excited about what Michigan Football will become next year.   We are very confident in the defense with the experience on the field and leadership of Durkin and Mattison.   The biggest question that needs to be answered this Spring and Fall Camps is, who will be behind center this Fall?

Michigan has only had 4 spring practices but the early buzz was Malzone was leading.  Let's see if we can make anything out of Fisch's comments yesterday:

On Speight: "Wilton is a very large man, he's a big guy (at 6-foot-6). He can see everything. He's a pretty good athlete and he throws the ball well. He doesn't seem to have had a ton of experience, I know Shane took more reps last year because he was the No. 2. So he's had more reps than Wilt, but Wilt makes a lot of nice throws and he's a good-sized kid.

On Morris: "Shane has a very strong arm, as everybody knows, he spins it well and he just has to understand that, really, that's not the most important thing. If you have a really strong arm, then you have a really strong arm. That's what you have. Now, it's a matter of 'what can you do with it?' How do you utilize it? His skill set and his arm strength are tremendous and he's very comfortable. It's fun to watch him in the huddle, he has a really good command of what we're asking him to do."

On Malzone: "He should be a senior in high school right now. I remember my senior spring, I wasn't in college. He's got a lot going on. But he's handled it unbelievably well. He's unbelievable in terms of his ability to not let things bother him. To be consistent and play the game. If a play doesn't go right, he's right back in there for the next one. A short-term memory is phenomenal for a quarterback."

Shane has always had a rocket arm but I'm wondering if having mono his senior year in high school and not having competent QB coaching under Hoke has hurt his ability to be a well rounded QB.    He was a guy that really could have used a red-shirt year and probably still could use one!!

Wilton Speight always reminded me of John Navarre and power forward playing QB.   I don't know much about Malzone but I like what I hear.   He always seems to want to compete.

Speaking of Jedd Fisch, since he is still getting paid by Jacksonville it seems we are getting a good deal: (from 247 board with a HT to Mgoblog)

Since Fisch was fired with a year remaining on his Jaguars contract, Michigan found themselves in an odd position with him. It’s somewhat uncommon to see a coach simultaneously drop in both level of sport and title, but Fisch went from the NFL to college and from OC to a position coach. Thus, even if Michigan were to make Fisch the highest-paid position coach in college football, it’s unlikely he’d even approach his NFL salary. From a financial standpoint, it pretty much doesn’t matter to Fisch what his Michigan salary is – in 2015, he’ll be getting the Jacksonville money either way. From Michigan’s side, Michigan now has motivation to pay Fisch as little as possible, since they still get the full benefit of Fisch’s services, while the Jaguars have to pick up the tab. Fisch doesn’t care, so the only real obstacle to Michigan paying Fisch $1 for the year would be the Jaguars.

He is making $200K a year at Michigan.   Must be nice cashing two checks!
