Wolverine Wednesday: QB Plan For the 2022 Class

It's hard to recruit a QB after signing a 5 star the year prior.  The problem is, you still need to take one, as its important to have at least 1 QB in every class.  We all know JJ signed and enrolled early and it seems he will have some limited snaps if Cade plays well and stays healthy.   Which means Michigan might want to redshirt the young 5 star.

Not a great selling point for a 4 or 5 star QB looking to start in a year or two.   So you start to look at guys that are good athletes as they are a QB.  Which means, you can move them if QB doesn't work out.  Michigan is very high on 3 star CA QB Nate Johnson that is also a track star.   The kid can fly and his coach reported he ran at 10.49 in the 100 meters.  Both Sam Webb and EJ Holland are predicting Nate to pick the Wolverines.  So who is Nate Johnson?

He is a 6'2 185 pound dual threat QB out of Clovis, California.  Rated the # 943rd player in the country and 23rd dual threat QB to 24/7 composite.  His top offers are from Michigan, ASU, Utah, Oregon State, and Brady Hoke.

Nate is planning an official visit to Ann Arbor on 6/11 and should be considered on commit watch.

While reading this, your first thought might be: How is a guy barley in the top 1000 going to be an option at QB?  That is a fair ask and I think all options will be open for him in some different roles.

Other QB options include:

  • Texas 3 star QB Alex Orji who recently committed to Va Tech
  • CA 4 star QB Justyn Martin who is a Cal commit
That is not a deep pool of prospects and its clear the Michigan staff is considering other positions the priority in the 22 class.   I'm wondering if the new transfer rule/portal makes taking a QB in this class a luxury only.

943rd rated player. That's crazy. I have him rated at 926...

No thanks. How about a good walk-on instead?

They're recruiting him as a QB???? Why not as an RB or WR or DB?
