Michigan Monday and Tuesday: A Wink and a Prayer

Sorry BHB Inmates, I was a late entry into a golf tournament across the state and between driving and playing in  the event it was a full day.  The game is very rusty!

Michigan Football made the a very controversial hire official on Monday announcing the hiring of former NFL DC Wink Martindale.  Wink in my mind has two comps, he could be Don Brown 2 or use this opportunity like Jedd Fisch did.   We will see which one we get.

Wink of course is getting his friends on board, as 24/7 is reporting that Kevin Wilkins a former defensive assistant for  the Giants under Wink will be joining Michigan's staff as an analyst.

  • Josh Gattis is a clown, that is all.
  • Xavier Worthy if fast and proved it at the NFL Combine.  Turns out we didn't need him to win a National Championship.  Good luck to him.
  • Braylon Edwards stops a fight over loud music in the locker room between a 20 year-old and a 80 year-old man.  The police are praising the former Michigan WR for saving the 80 year-old mans life.
  • Juwan Howard has had a terrible season in every way.  Even losing his well known S&C Coach whose son is a top high school player in Michigan.  All expectation is that he will be back for a Warde Make it or Break it year.   Juwan better do some work in the portal.
  • Seems JJ had a good experience at the combine and now some insiders are predicating him inside the top 10 picks.
  • Sources are saying that Michigan stars got nearly $2M offers to leave Ann Arbor.

Thank goodness we dodged that Josh Gattis bullet... if he stayed, he might have been the HC vs. Sherronne. Much happier where we landed.

A bidding war for Michigan starters for up to 2 million is legal? The NCAA is just a shell of its former self. They are impotent and need Viagra!!
This bidding war goes on, but their main concern is a couple of cheeseburgers for recruits (hard to believe unbelievable things)

I am not the praying kind, but I pray to Jesus that the Big Ten/SEC split from NCAA and break it so it's no longer serviceable. What would Bo think about the money flying around and Woody and Keith Jackson? I admit I am a fair weather Michigan fan, the last three seasons were gratifying, but it they never won A game the next three years, I would just turn to something else, like working out!

Michigan football has also officially hires Greg Scruggs as there defensive line coach, a top recruiter having Ohio inroads.

Scruggs was Wisconsin's lead recruiter in bringing in Jamel Howard, a late riser in HS who Michigan went after in 23. In having a close relationship with Scruggs, would love to see him poach him away from Wisconsin, looking as a player who would fit the mode of interior linemen now being recruited at Michigan.

Scotty- I agree, Bo would be disgusted at how the NIL is being abused. I don't like it either. Its everything I don't like about the NFL, now even more so in college. There are no rails for this train to even go off from.

I saw how Alabama got Keon Saab. Picture of Keon getting the windows tinted on his new Mercedes SUV. Freaking red necks. That's ok, we got the Natty.

Josh Gattis isn't even a has-been. He's a never was. He rode the coat tails of Jimmy knowing darn well Harbaugh was calling the shots here. Just a low class scum bag. Don't think he's going to get any respect, or job offerings, from around the league. As we all know, its a 'Good ole boys' network.

I'm worried about Juwan turning things around. I think he has a big man's view of the game and that's not what wins now. Its about shooters and slashers.

Bob, Hank Haney recommends at least 3 weeks on the driving range to develop muscle memory in your swing before hitting the course. And as we know, what ever your swing is like, that's what you bring to the course. Welcome back, Big Kahuna!

Regarding Gattis, Michigan usually has a confidentiality agreement (N.D.A.) that former players and coaches sign when they leave. I'm surprised Gattis spouted off like that without some sort of recourse from Michigan. Hopefully karma gets his ass.

Whenever someone wants to value signal and say they are taking the high road, they are about to take the low road. Gattis went low. Warde and Juwan need to chat and come up with a win/win that allows Juwan to punch on his own terms. Go get Dutcher back, he wins.

Huh? Martindale invented the system Michigan has been using for the past three years. I guess you have to write about something.

Rudy- I like that idea. Getting Brian Dutcher back would be awesome.

Cormac, Wink was run out of Baltimore and his results with the G-men wasn't anything to crow about. Add to that NO ONE came calling for his services in the NFL, even one of his former proteges, Mike MacDonald didn't tab him for his defensive staff! The word on Wink is he's become blitz happy. Last year in NY his defense blitzed the 2nd most in the league, yet was middle of the pack or below in most defense categories. Look, many want to say it was a personnel issues both in Baltimore his last year and in NY. His last season in Baltimore, just about the whole secondary died, but that where the criticism came, even though he didn't have the horses, he kept blitzing and leaving his back up DBs on islands. Sound familiar? Sound a little like Donnie Brown? Going to do it his way, whether it works or not?

Chowman- I think Sharrone was looking for continuation when he hired Martindale. Wink's defenses were top in the NFL his first 3 years in Baltimore, so his scheme can work. He's flawed, sometimes puts his backs on an island, but his philosophy is to make the QB throw the ball as quick as possible and cause turnovers. Lots of disguised defenses. It's what we've been doing for the last 3 years.
