Michigan Friday: Did Michigan Find Its Transfer QB?

SI.com

Michigan has been a bit quiet in the transfer portal so far and it makes a number of fans (including myself) nervous that they are again not taking the portal seriously.   The insiders are saying, don't let the lack of noise mean they are not active.   Which ok, we will trust the process for a week or so before we pull the alarm.

The latest is Maryland QB Billy Edwards Jr. has entered the transfer portal.  Reports are he is expected to visit Wisconsin this weekend.  Then On3 Wiltfong and Nokas both put in predictions for Michigan to land Edwards in the portal.

So who is Billy Edwards?

He has been at Maryland for 3 years after a redshirt year at Wake Forest.

2021 - Redshirt

2022: 28-46 passes for 313 yards with 3 TDs

2023:  10-30 for 128 yards with 1 TD and 1 Pick

2024: 274-420 for 2,881 with 15 TD's and 9 picks.

Billy is also a runner and gained 136 yards with 1 TD in 2022, 91 in 2023 with 7 TD's, and 148 with 5 TD's in 24.

Looks like a productive dual-threat QB with two years of eligibility left.  Maryland had a terrible offensive line this year which probably didn't help the picks.

Is this Michigan's future QB?  We will soon find out and whether he makes a trip to Madison or not.

  • Thank goodness Dan Mullen is heading to UNLV instead of being the OC at Michigan.  Never thought he would be good fit in Ann Arbor.
  • Warde is making $1.9M a year in his new contract.  No comment.
  • Loveland did not win the Mackey, it went to the Penn State TE
  • Mason Graham wins some new award/promotion from Arby's.  Love me some Arby's

I think the Mackey is a factor of 2 things. First, Loveland didn't have guady stats as the Michigan offense struggled to throw a forward pass at the beginning of the season and once they settled on Davis Warren, Loveland was hurt. Second, the PSU guy does everything. Wildcat, throws the ball, he's a swiss army knife

II agree with you Cman....PSU guy Warren had more touches than Loveland. A deeper dig into the rankings shows that out of the 464 prospects rated 4-stars or higher, just 10 of those haven't signed on the dotted line. So, there is still a large group of programs around the nation trying to catch the attention of a select few guys. Can Michigan land some of them. We need DL!!

Bob, not sure your angst against Dan Mullen or how close you follow college football in general. Guy was head coach over two National Championship teams, two SEC Championships, and league leading offenses. What exactly don't you like about that? Smh

DL will come thru the portal. The available late signees are usually due to admissions red tape.

Alex Orji has entered the portal. Alex, you are not a D1 quarterback. Get your Michigan degree, and switch to running back. Dont throw your future away for a cheap NIL bonus.

Brady, I totally agree with you on Orji, he's not a division one quarterback he can't throw the ball with any consistency.. switch to running back and definitely get a Michigan degree

well, one of Mullen's issues is he doesn't like to recruit. You already have a DC that doesn't recruit.

there are FBS programs that run an offensive scheme that features QB run. It's easy to say switch to RB, but if being a QB is in his heart, it could be near impossible to dissuade him. Also, just because he's a running QB doesn't me its an easy transition to RB. Its a different style of running and he may not succeed at it. 6'3" is a giant RB, and as a QB he has more of an upright running style. I just don't see him as a D1 football player.

Chowman- At some point, Alex is going to stop living the dream. He may become a starting Div 2 QB somewhere for 2 years. Maybe even get an award or two. (Long odds on that) Then what? He's taking your order at the local McDonalds drive thru. Too many kids are pushed to follow their dream in hope they get to ride their coat tails $$$. 95% of these dreams end up in ashes. I wish Alex the best though. He played a vital role here getting us a Natty. Forever grateful.

Mateen Cleaves would walk around my former company doing absolutely nothing. His job title was 'Ambassador'. Everyone there that worked their tail off for 10 hrs a day laughed at Cleaves. He's basically dancing for the man (Ishbea).

I'm not saying its a great plan, but its his plan. End of the day he gets to live his life the way he wants

Chowman- Yes. Mullen would also cause a power imbalance. I dont think he and Sherrone would co-exist well.

QB Billy Edwards visiting A.A. on Monday. Yes please.

Props to Bob, his sources were correct on this one. Let's hope he commits.

Coaches now don't want to recruit,,,, I don't damn blame them, I wouldn't....

Brady2017 said...

They say Dieon hasn't left Boulder once. Smh

Chowman said...

No he relies on his name to get recruits. Also heard he puts more emphasis on the portal than recruiting HS players.

Rich Rod is as wishy washy as ever. His quotes- "Gosh, this sure is nice." "I should have never left". "Going to Michigan was a mistake". Cmon, man, grow a pair and own your decisions. Say you learned from them, and they were a necessary part of growth. Same ole Rich Rod. I see plenty of .500 seasons ahead.

Yeah that was kind of cheesy and he shouldn't have said it, but he's probably right...

Szanreno- I was watching his presser waiting for Josh Grobin to come on. Lol Nice guy, but softer than Cryin Ryan.
