Michigan Tuesday: The QB Room Gets Depth

There is something going on in Michigan's QB Room and for some reason we are in the dark about it.  Michigan has the #1 player in the nation and future star in Bryce Underwood, the job is his in future years for sure.  But he has zero college playing experience and Michigan needs a QB with experience, so that Bryce can follow the JJ rules and allow him to get snaps in year 1 without having the entire team on his shoulders.

Michigan went out and got Fresno State QB Mikey Keene who has played college football for like 15 years and knows Chip's system.  He has a mystery injury and did not participate in Spring Football.   The second QB in Spring Ball is former 5 star Jaydn Davis who was put on a shelf last season but has a really bad wind up in his throwing motion.   Davis Warren blew out his ACL in The Outback Bowl (or whatever its called now) after beating Ohio State and Alabama.  A Herbstreit is coming this summer but even though he got a scholarship, he is sort of considered a preferred walk-on.

Michigan grabbed another QB on Monday in former Miami, Missouri, and East Carolina QB in Jake Garcia.  Jake was a former Top 50 recruit in the 2021 class but has had a hard time finding success in college at multiple stops.  He has 2 years of eligibility remaining.  Last season, in six games, Garcia went 109-for-181 for 1,426 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He lost his starting job in October to former Michigan State quarterback Katin Houser.  Which is clearly not good.

My take is the same when Jake visited a couple weeks ago, he is a break glass in case of emergency QB.  Sherrone made a huge mistake last season going into the season with zero options for a starting QB.   He is trying to not make the same mistake twice.  The big un-answered question is, are we at emergency status right now?  Is Mikey's injury serious and he can't play next season?  We don't expect Davis Warren to be healthy to play and Jaydn Davis needs at least another year of development before he sees any live action.

If any of the above is accurate, Michigan needed a healthy QB to back-up Bryce and the JJ rules are out the window.

What's the old saying? If you have two starters you don't have any.
