Michigan Football Can't.............

So I was in attendance for that monstrosity on Saturday. In my preview, I was worried about this game being like the Purdue game last year, I was right except for the fact Michigan laid down after the double touchdown video reversals. (I haven't seen the video but being at the game and seeing both on the big screen, I thought both calls were Horse Sh*t).

Michigan will be lucky to be 6-6 this year and after going 4-0 that will be a nice 2-6 finish. Talk about a "hot" team, huh? Even if Michigan does beat Purdue and gets to 6 wins, I'm not sure they deserve an invite to a bowl game.

After walking out of the stadium a Michigan fan who was walking in front of us was asked by a guy smoking where he was going? He said, "both teams suck and mine sucks worse". So I have been going back and forth on what to write and that statement starting me thinking about all the things these Wolverines lack to do. So here is my list of what the current 2009 Wolverines Can't D0:

Michigan Football Can't:

  • Win on the road
  • Play in the rain
  • Play in the cold
  • Game plan on either side of the ball
  • Keep a lead
  • Catch a break from the video referee
  • Beat teams worse then them in the Big Ten (mostly on the road)
  • Play consistent offense after the 1st drive
  • Stop giving up big plays on defense
  • Tackle from the safety position
  • Stop fumbling from the QB position
  • Pass protect
  • Catch the ball to keep a drive going
  • Find anyone on scholarship to play safety

How is any football team able to win with all those "cant's"? It's not possible. I blame Lloyd Carr for his past recruiting classes and I blame Rich Rodriguez and Greg Robinson. Michigan needs to win these type of games. Nobody is expecting a 11 win year but we do expect to beat a team that would have trouble scoring 38 points by themselves in practice.

The state of the Wolverines is not very good and Brandon Graham, Carlos Brown, Brandon Minor, and Zoltan Mesko deserve better. Michigan has 3 games to save this season and really only 1 is winnable. This story hasn't ended but the fat lady is moving towards the microphone.

This season has gotten to be like having a tooth pulled with no anesthesia.

A positive: The pain from a tooth extraction only lasts for a couple of days. This year's terrible performance will last years.

Not true, next year, whether good or bad, this year, like last year, will be forgotten. What do you really remember about the past 25 seasons on a regular basis? 1997, 2006, & Appalachian State. So, just like my root canal, I knew it hurt at one time but now everything is just fine.

Sometimes we forget that this year is the normal "next step" in Michigan's progression. Keep in mind that Tate and Denard are still freshman, and in spite of signs of brilliance, they are still freshman. Now against better quality teams they are showing that they are truly freshman.

We also have to keep in mind that yes we've seen the offensive line make a big improvement over last year when they stunk. However, next year they will be that much better and more stable. Also Tate and Denard will be another year older within this system with actual game experience which helps more than you know.

We should keep in mind that we didn't really expect the defense to be world stoppers this year because the bulk of the so called talent left last year. Coach Robinson is new with a new system and he has done a good job working with what he has, which many considered to be a big drop off. This years recruiting class should help build some much needed depth, and the defense will be in the system for a second year which will be the first time in how many years that will be the case? So we should expect more improvement from the defense next year just like we've seen from the offense this year. They may not be leading the BT but they won't continue to be a sieve either.

Next year, Michigan should "challenge" for or be in the "hunt" for the Big Ten title, with a more serious challenge the following years to come. So don't fret or sweat this year, it's apart of Michigan's growing pains.

IMO

You are DREAMING if you think we are going to challenge for anything next year. Let me tell you why: 1.) we are going to be on probation for a Major Violation, 2.) even if RR survives the NCAA inquiry, we are recruiting mostly average to slightly above average recruits to fill our holes. Unlike Ohio State and others… This would be okay if RR and Team could coach up like Brian Kelly and company, 3.) it won’t matter because RR won’t be here because he will be fired after we are dinged with the Major Violation and put on probation and 4.) given the loss of scholarships and bowl restrictions resulting from the violation, it is going to take his replacement 3 or 4 years to turn things around.

Even if we manage to escape with a minor violation, we still keep RR for one more year and then he goes because we only win 5 or 6 games next year. Then his replacement takes 4 or 5 years to undo what he has done. Either way, our beloved Wolverines are screwed for the next 4 or 5 years.

There is alot of gray area in the work out rules. Similar programs that been found guilty have only gotten a slap on the wrist.

The wildcard here is the new AD. What will he or she do if RR continues to struggle?

Well Jason, it appears there are two camps in the blog world, the first one believes that because about 70% of the current Michigan team is made up of freshman and sophomores, that they will be fine in the long run. While the other camp believes there is nothing but gloom and doom (gd) predicted for Michigan. It looks like you're in the (gd) camp. That's okay, I don't see it that way.

I also don't see RR being fired at this point because Michigan's AD and President made a big investment in hiring RR. To fire him now would set the program back another three years IMO. I also don't believe there will be a probation for the school. I'm not convinced, that there is enough to convict the school, but it's okay to agree to disagree. Go in peace!
