Rich Rodriguez 1st Day of Practice Press Conference

RR met with the media tonight on practice today:

  • Weather was cool today for practice - maybe not as hot as he expected.
  • Some guys are not ready for division one football - conditioning wise
  • Offense and Defensive lineman look to be in good shape
  • Friday is the first full day practice - Sunday first two a days
  • RR wants to do less scheming in practice and wants the team to play faster and not have to "think" and play slower.  He will adjust with the coaches tonight.
  • All 3 QB's took snaps
  • Need to limit contact on QB's but at the same time get them ready to play
  • Seniors taking leadership with the team
  • Tate has a lot of work to do on and off the field but had a good practice today.
  • Smith, Martin, and Molk all where 100% today after injuries last year
  • Michael Shaw still in summer school and has not been approved to practice yet
  • Another week and half of summer school left
  • Going to have more players on defensive that can contribute
  • Wants offensive line is big guys that can move only had one bad snap today
  • The seniors want to pick 2 permanent captains and 2 game captains.  They voted on it and will tell the team tonight.
  • Won't really have an idea on starters until first scrimmage two weeks in
  • The freshman are fast and likes the speed on day one
  • Will Hagerup has a powerful leg and if he continues to progress should be the starter
  • Safety and Corner have the best shots for the freshman to earn playing time
  • Michigan and Bama conversations are on-going
  • Not too concerned at RB experience - feels they have a talented group
  • Kelvin Grady will play in the slot and at running back and says he is a full time football player
  • He would prefer his players don't Tweet or be on Facebook, has educated them on it and there isn't a ban.
  • Doesn't want to focus on Tate and the summer workouts
  • Proud of Brock Mealer as any kid that he has coached, he had a 1% chance to walk and he thinks he will do it
