Michigan Monday: Coaching News

The Harbaugh coaching tree got pruned yesterday as Florida State decided to move on from Willie Taggart after less than two seasons.   FSU raised $20 Million from donors to pay off his $17M buy out, what a great use of money to pay a coach to not coach at your University.  I wonder if 2019 Michigan recruit and 4 star LB Kalen DeLoach who signed with FSU is having second thoughts?  Kalen's top two schools where Michigan and FSU before deciding on the Seminoles.

Don't be surprised if Willie ends up on Jimmy's staff or as a coach (if he loses one) next season. There is a lot of respect between the two coaches and Willie is known as a great recruiter.   He also would be a cheap hire with FSU sending monthly checks.   Some expect Penn State's James Franklin is a top candidate for FSU and USC if that job comes open.  I expect Urban to take the USC job, he would never go to a Florida rival.

I'm a little surprised this hasn't happened earlier but it seems Rutgers is now moving forward to hire former coach Greg Schiano, who some suspect has been in the works for nearly a year.   Rutgers did interview former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones on Friday.  Not sure what Rutgers is waiting for as Greg isn't working and Rutgers could use some news in this dreadful season.  Expectation is that Rutgers could make an announcement as early as Wednesday.   I assume they want to give Greg a clean slate starting next season, though the first signing day is roughly a month away.  Rutgers has the 90th ranked class with 10 verbal's in the 2020 class (24/7).

  • Michigan is ranked #14 in the AP, which will become irreverent on Tuesday when the first playoff rankings come out.

  • Duncan Robinson dropped 23 last night for the Heat.  I have to say, he is the most surprising former Michigan basketball player to make it in the NBA.  I'm very happy for him and hope he continues his great shooting!

  • Last night was not all bad for the Harbaugh's as John beat Captain America in Baltimore.  I sort of expected to see Jimmy on the sideline since this is a bye week and he was in the area rolling Maryland on Saturday.

  • Juwan's team had an impressive performance in a scrimmage against D2 Saginaw Valley State on Friday.  Tomorrow it starts for real against App. State.  (Never schedule App. State! :-))

On a side note, I can't remember so many teams taking byes during the first two weekends of November.   I guess this is a symptom of the season going longer and conference championship games.   All top 3 teams were off last week and there are really only a couple good games this weekend, including Bama - LSU and Minnesota - PSU.   It will be interesting to see if PJ Fleck actually has a team or not.

Because of the early Labor Day and the late Thanksgiving there are two bye weeks this year instead of one and so this does make some sense.
