Michigan Friday: Hey Jay - What Do you Say?

Michigan was always in the recruitment of California 6'2 315 pound DT Jay Toia. Michigan offered Jay back in February 2020 but he decided to go to USC and enrolled in January. Well, something has changed and before even playing his first college game and just going through Spring Practice, Jay has entered the Transfer Portal and looking for a new home. Below is what Coach Helton had to say about him after Spring Ball:

"The other guy that really stood out to me was Jay Toia and just how far he has come from day one. I wish everybody could have seen him day one, when he stepped on campus compared to where he is at right now. It is literally night and day," said USC head coach Clay Helton during camp. "But he is somebody that you know, when he is put in a competitive drill or live drill, you're talking about off the field is the sweetest human being you'll ever meet. I don't know who he becomes, when it's a competitive situation. He is a different person and it's been really neat to see how talented he is but also the unbelievable sense of urgency that guy has to help this team next year."

"I love his coachability and the plays that he's making on the field. You're talking about a 330-pound man that you have to double team," he added. "If you single him, it's a hard day so we're very fortunate to have Jay here. It was a great competitive battle in recruiting to get him here and he has a very bright future at USC."

Jay was heavily recruited but Michigan always maintained he was their top DT on the board. Is he interested in coming to Ann Arbor? A bit too early to tell but something to keep an eye on. We know its hard to get kids from the West Coast, but getting him to visit would be a big plus. Close him Coach Nua!
