Wolverine Wednesday: Let's Discuss Minter

As I had hoped, Jimmy picked Vandy's DC Jesse Minter as Michigan next Defensive Coordinator.   This is a great hire for many reasons and will get into that in a few.   Let's bullet out his experience first:

  • He is 38 years young
  • Son of former Cincy head coach and longtime ND DC Rick Minter
  • 2007 Grad Assistant with Mike Elston at Cincinnati
  • 2009 LB Coach at Indiana State
  • 2011 named Indiana State DC at the age of 26
  • 2013 left with his head coach to Georgia State as DC
  • 2015 finalist for the Broyles Award
  • 2017-2020 Ravens Secondary Coach
  • 2021 Vanderbilt DC
How can you call this a great hire, Vandy's defense sucked last year dude?

Jesse has 8 years' experience being a college coordinator.    He also knows the Raven's defense like the back of his hand.  Michigan didn't need another defensive scheme change and this keeps things consistent as he and Coach Mac are very similar.   He knows how to recruit (which Coach Mac hated) and runs the same system.  Yes, please!

Jimmy tried to hire him last year, but Mo Linguist became available and then quickly jumped to the head coaching job at Buffalo when Les Miles flamed out at Kansas.  By that time Jesse was already at Vandy.

To recap:
  • Young with a ton of experience in college
  • Runs the same Ravens system
  • Has experience leading an SEC defense
He might not be a big name, but this is a homerun hire.  Even if Michigan did hire Michigan Man Larry Foote, there would be transition costs.  I do expect Jesse will be the Co-DC with Coach Clink when everything is announced.

Ok Bob, what should we expect next season?

We lost Hutch, DO, and Dax to the NFL.  Those were not just our 3 best players those are 3 of the best defenders in the country.  Those guys just don't grow on trees, but Michigan does have young talent all over the place.  RJ Moten, Rod Moore, DJ Turner, Will Johnson hopefully can lock down the secondary.  Junior Colston is a future All American at LB and I believe guys like Mazi Smith, and Braidan McGregor are ready to explode as college players.  If Michigan next season can get a pass rush, I like the upside for this defense.

  • RIP Al Glick, a huge Wolverine supporter at games and with his wallet.  If you don't know who Al was, he was the older gentlemen always seating near Juwan on the Michigan floor seats.
  • I don't expect Michigan to hire anymore "outside" coaches as long as they take care of Mike Hart.

I'm a wee bit concerned about the edge rushers. Nobody not named Hutchinson or Ojabo jumped out during last season. Minter is probably going to have to get creative and blitz more to get pressure on the QB.

I'm looking at this year's team to go into Columbus with a chance to come out as East Division Champions. Favorable Schedule ... Dynamic Offense ... Great Special Teams ...Strong Defense.

Also looking for this kid Cole Cabana to end-up his career as being something special here at Michigan.
