Wolverine Wednesday: 2 Big Guys with Decisions to Make

There are two big men that will have a large effect on both lines next season and future seasons to come.

Let's talk about the 5 star first:

Josh Conerly is a 5-star OT from Seattle.  He is a 2022 recruit, that's right he has passed both signing days and still on the market as he takes recruiting on his own timeline.  24/7 ranks him as the #2 OT in the class and is still available.   His final list of 6 schools is: Michigan, Washington, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC and Miami.

Michigan was thought to be the leader early in his recruitment, but he didn't commit or sign and now others could've replaced the Wolverines.   He visited Oregon recently and will visit USC before he makes a final decision.  Josh will have visited all the schools on his list and many of them a few times (including Michigan).

Josh doesn't talk much, so the recruiting insiders have hesitated to make a prediction. So, his announced April 8th announcement might be a surprise to all 6 schools.   Hat tip to the young man for making an educated and thoughtful decision on his own timeline.

Now let's discuss help on the Defensive Line:

It's not a secret that Michigan has depth issues on the defensive line now and entering next season.  Yes, the younger guys are stepping up and reports out of Spring Practice are Mazi Smith, Kris Jenkins, Rayshaun Benny, and George Rooks are playing well.

Still Michigan needs help at the position as injuries happen and every DC loves to rotate defensive lineman on the regular.   Michigan will entertain UCF DL transfer Cam Goode at some point for a visit, but is there another answer?  Maybe.

Donovan Jeter still has one year of eligibility left.   Many thought he might head to the NFL or jump into the portal.  Michigan needs him but he hasn't participated in Spring Practice, and it was assumed he had left the program.

New update from Rivals is that Donovan was at Spring Practice on Monday and might have changed his mind on leaving.  Let's hope that report is accurate, as the Wolverines need him badly next season.   I also believe if Jeter comes back, the door is still open for Goode to join the program as well (if he picks Ann Arbor).

  • Michigan Basketball has reached out to PSU PG Transfer Sam Sessions.  Michigan seems to have good depth at PG next season with Frankie, Kobe, and Dug coming in.   Though they could use some shooting and Sam shot 42% from 3 and averaged 11 points per game last season.  Sam has played 4 years and is transferring as a Super Senior.

I'm a little worried about Bufkin at the point. I know he's made a few big 3's, but he seems more comfortable as a 2 guard than PG.

Perhaps the ghost of legend Derek whispered into Donavan's ear, "Do the right thing".
