Breaking News: NCAA Opens New Investigation on Michigan Football

Early reports are that the NCAA has alerted the Big Ten that they are investigating Michigan Football for in-person scouting of opponents.

With film and every game on TV, I'm not sure why this would even be a thing or give Michigan an advantage.  I guess a scout could try to chart signals.  With the audio in the helmets, I'm also wondering why that would be effective.    I thought QB helmet communication was allowed in college football like the NFL, it is not allowed.

Yahoo is the first to report this investigation.

Sending scouts to other games was outlawed in 1994 to save college money.

There are plenty of old stories of Woody sending scouts to watch Michigan's practice on Stadium's bridge.

Per the Yahoo Story:

Two of Michigan's opponents this season told Yahoo Sports they became aware that Michigan knew their play signs. Sign stealing does not violate NCAA rules unless the team uses in-game, electronic equipment to relay the information to players on the field or amongst coaches. The 2023 NCAA football rule book addresses sign stealing in a general way under a section titled Prohibited Field Equipment. It states that “any attempt to record, either through audio or video means, any signals given by an opposing player, coach or other team personnel is prohibited.” No corresponding penalty is listed.

It's Rutgers and who else?  Another question, why would Michigan need to steal signs to beat the teams on their schedule this year?  Also, there is a reason why most teams have large cardboard signs or multiple guys doing signs so they "don't have their mail read".

Bottom line: Jimmy has pissed off the NCAA and they are going to double click on everything Michigan Football.

If you're not cheating, you not trying to win. I get there's limits, but teams always pushing the limits. Also, I wondered why college football, especially power 5 schools don't utilize the helmet communication to signal in plays? It's like when Houston got busted for stealing signs, and look I didn't think it was a big deal then either, my first thought was why can't baseball use something like the NFL. well, wah-lah, the do now, thanks to the Houston Astros. Stealing signs is as old as sports. Hell, we tried to steal signs when I coached travel softball. Its why the better teams utilized the arm bands

I don't get it either chowman. When the other team is signaling in plays are you supposed to look the other way. As long as you're not tapping into the headsets I say steal away if you're able...

It's chicken bleep. NCAA has a hard on for Harbaugh and Michigan, especially Harbaugh cause he more blatantly than others reminded the NCAA they are toothless.

Definitely that P.O.S. Greg Schiano, who hasn't won squat as head coach. He will learn it's best not to piss Jimmy off. He wouldn't like him when he's angry. I hope Jimmy runs up the score against those scrubs next year and really burn Schiano's ass. Jim is competetive. His fire has now been stoked. Lets take it out on that other jackass James Franklin. Wouldn't be surprised if his winey ass was the other that complained. GO BLUE! TAKE NO PRISONERS! EXECUTE AND DESTROY!!

Probably Schiano and Day. They were coordinators together at Ohio.
