Michigan Thursday: Future QB Decommits from Michigan

Last night FL QB Carter Smith decided to de-commit from Michigan in the 2025 class.   The buzz around Michigan going all in on trying to flip the #1 player in the country Bryce Underwood must of rubbed Carter the wrong way.

My reaction.  Michigan's QB for next season is not on the roster or was currently committed.  Don't forget that Brady Hart is a 2026 QB commit.  Which means Michigan has two options.  Pull in Bryce or hit the portal.  I love how hard Michigan is going at Bryce to try to change his mind, but I still consider that bit of a longshot.  Carter would have been a nice developmental QB but he was at least 2-3 years away from playing at best.

This is also the difference of being 6-6 vs. 12-0 with a National Championship run.  Michigan will be able to work the portal early and often this December vs. what happened last season.

I'm also going to put this take out here.  I don't believe Michigan should accept a Bowl Bid if there are enough qualifiers from the Big Ten conference to fill all the spots.   Michigan's NFL draftable players will all opt out and it will be nothing but a bad exhibition game.  It's not the end of the world if Michigan plays in a bad bowl, I just don't see a ton of upside other then two more weeks of practice.

Next years starting QB better be coming from the TP or its going to be another long year. No true freshman is coming to AA and turning the program around, and that includes Bryce Underwood. Its a big jump from HS to college, especially at QB. Only generational talents can make the jump seemlessly.

Unless things are brought under control, will there be "feeding frenzy" bidding wars in the future? If so, for ammunition for NIL bidding wars > are universities going to increase ticket prices to pay for some of this?
Are they going to apply "Traffic will bear policy" ... that is raise ticket prices high enough before it affects attendance? Thought popped into my head while was on the Head!

Any player that runs from competition is not worth a dime.

Take the Bowl bid. Again, you never shy from competition. Play and develop the 2nd and 3rd string.

Spot on. There have been a handful of Freshman QBs to start, but you're going to take some lumps w them. Chad Henne started. Tate Forcier and Denard both started. J.J. played some and could have started if Cade got injured. Someone like Underwood might have to start and get baptism under fire.

That's an ugly rabbit hole. UM has big time boosters and untapped revenue from advertising to cover escelating costs. Cross your fingers it doesn't get to a cooperate takeover.

Coach has to limit a young QBs options. Have scripted plays ready. Run safe flanker slants. RB screen. Deep post. Then you cut the QB read in half. Instead of having 4 WR routes to choose from, narrow it to 2, and based off the coverage, the QB should know exaxtly where he is going to throw before the ball is even snapped. And always know your hot route for a blitz. Then you slowly add plays as the season goes on.

Brady: Lumps for sure. RichRod had no choice, and once Michigan got into the heart of the schedule Tate didn't looks so sweet and there went his September Heisman!

I thought the Universities couldn't directly pay for players. It's the boosters, the Dave Portnoy's that pay the NIL freight. If there isn't any institutional control, I can see this self correcting eventually. A 5 star grade doesn't guarantee anything. Can you say Spencer Rattler?

Drew Henson started some, too.

Right! 'May the Forcier Be With You' was fun while it lasted. Lol

Chowman- They just passed something in the courts last month that would allow revenue sharing with athletes. Basically contracts.

Brady, I have to say, I couldn't stand Tate Forcier. I know I was in the minority back then, but he just rubbed me the wrong way. Even with all those scrambles early in the season, he put himself in bad spots to have to scramble. I remember screaming at the TV "throw the damn ball away!"

Typical Michigan thinking....Put all your eggs in one basket, (Undewood), and when he stays at LSU Michigan has egg all over their face again and no 2025 QB.

and Thom, if I'm Underwood, I'm not coming to Michigan, not for the same money. Who wants to sign up to be posterized as the savior of the program. Going to LSU would be a lot less pressure. Michigan would have to significantly beat LSU's offer, and after getting the bag, I'd be in the portal the next offseason, aka a Quinn Ewers.

Ya, when Rich Rod made Tate wear a plain blue helmet in practice with no Maize wings, kinda signaled he had a problem.

Chowman- Depends on what Underwood wants to do. He might be a one and done kind of guy, and want to go to the league asap. Have you seen that kid? I mean he is ripped. He's physically ready for the league now.

If I'm recruiting Underwood, I'm telling him we are going to build our offense around your strengths, not molding you to our offense.

there's no 1 and done in the college football. You have be 3 years out of HS.

2nd, the most important thing to a 5 star is getting to the league and the best way to do that is to win. Even with Bryce Underwood, I don't see next years team being much better. Your going lose 4 of you top defenders in Graham, Grant, Johnson, and Stewart.
