Wolverine Wednesday: Dusty Blows Through LA

It's not a secret to the regular readers of BHB what I think of Warde as the AD at Michigan.  I'm sure he is a nice guy but that guy would not be running a McDonalds for me.   That doesn't mean all his decisions are bad decisions.  He went out and got the best head basketball coach in the country in my mind in Dusty May.  As you know, my son attended FAU and graduated a year ago.  He got to watch Dusty work every winter on turning a nothing basketball program into a Final 4 school.  The man can flat out coach and develop talent.  Well done Warde.

Dusty promised a competitive team and that is what we got.  Michigan just went out to LA for little under a week to play both USC and UCLA on the road.  He beat them both.  Last night Vlad went for 36 point in what turned out to be a blowout win over UCLA. The Bruins were ranked #20 and had the 4th best defense in the country.   I wondered when a Michigan player had scored so many points, the answer is 2006 when Daniel Horton went for 39 against Illinois.   It's a good day when you get a Daniel Horton reference on the blog!

If Michigan can protect leads and stop turning the ball over, they will be in great shape for the rest of the Big Ten season and March Madness.

Pretty special game with Jalen Rose on the call!

  • Mick Cronin calls his team soft after the Michigan loss and said he is toughest person in practice.  I don't know his team but I would say this is 100% accurate.
  • Michigan has offered New Mexico State 6'8 OT Shiyazh Pete from the portal
  • A year ago today, Michigan was crowned National Champions! One of the best days of my life!

Yes please: Shiyazh Pete (6-8, 320) is a long left tackle with good movement skills. The veteran shows good feet allowing him to climb to the next level in the run game and mirror speed rusher in pass protection.

Hattar and Norton don't move the needle! They're alright, but both were considered tier 2 OL prospects in the portal.

Don't know what you have against Norton. He could be a pleasant surprise given who our OL coach is,

Thank you John Beilein in convincing Dusty May that Michigan was the right place to set his roots, Warde may take the credit because he's a jerk, but ask Dusty why he came to Michigan and John Beiliein name will pop up.

Agree Chowman, Shiyazh Pete would be a good to very good addition in filling a much needed tackle position, and the kid has his priorities in order.

Just reading scouting reports. Yeah Norton had a high PFF grade but who was Cal Poly's competition? He going to grade out that high against B1G and power 4 competition? Both he and Hattar were consider tier 2 prospects and most likely back ups/special teamers. Not going to lie and say I watched any Cal Poly or Ferris St games, if you did, PROPS! If you didn't what are you basing your assessment on?

Going back and re-reading some of the ratings, Norton was considered a 3 star recruit out of the portal. His measurables also leave a lot to be desired: 6'-3" 275lbs doesn't move the needle especially in the B1G. Now you want to tell me after a full year of weight training at Michigan he can be a bigger contributor? Ok, but not expecting much next season.

Chowman...give the kid a chance before you knock him. Ok, so he is not Reggie McKenzie. McKenzie wasn't much coming out of high school till his junior year at Michigan. Lets see if he develops. Don't think Michigan would have offered if there wasn't something that intrigued them.

He's small when it comes to Michigan OL. The OL this past season was substandard for Michigan standards but they ALL averaged 300+. I'm just going on what I'm reading on other sites. Right now we seem to be set at OT with Link and Sprague. Is there room to upgrade? Sure, but if they start the season with both those guys I think the coaching staff would be ok with it. Similarly El Hadid was solid at G and think the staff is ok with him. C was a mess, with them bouncing back and forth (during games.........) with Guidice and Crippen. Guidice is gone and I think the staff would like to upgrade from Crippen. Priebe is leaving for the NFL and there's no immediate player that standouts to replace him. There's hope that somebody that's currently on the roster seizes the opportunity. None of the articles I read projected Norton as in the mix to start. I'm not saying he'll never play at Michigan, just not counting on him for next season. He's GOT to put on muscle mass if he's playing OL for UofM. As for Hattar, the scouting wasn't as kind. Reason he was at Ferris state is he's unathletic with slow feet and relies on leaning on guys instead of moving them with good footwork. His projected contribution would be FG/EP protection.
