Michigan Monday: Big Ten Coaches Check

College football is interesting these days.  NIL and the transfer portal has separated the talent from a handful of schools and spread it out across the country.  Indiana's program has turned the corner into a solid program like I have never seen before.  They embarrassed Illinois last weekend.

I have a philosophy that certain coaches in the Big Ten are stuck in their ways and will never adapt to win a national championship.  I think Harbaugh was that way until he saw the light and had to change the way he approached the game.  If you remember, the 49'ers hated him as he was leaving because he was stuck in his "old football ways". What do you think of this list?

1. Kirk Ferentz - The game has passed him by.  His teams will always play he same way, always a borderline bowl team every year, because he won't change.

2. Brett Bielema - I'm not sure I've witnessed a worst out coaching then he got handed on Saturday night on national TV.  Keep wearing those jackets in 90 degree heat and not changing.

3. Luke Fickell - Is new to this list, but I feel like he should be there.  I thought this was a solid hire for Wisconsin, but he hasn't done anything to get anyone excited about Wisconsin football.  Maryland just rolled them at home.

4. James Franklin - The guy is an elite recruiter, but one of the worst in-game coaches I've seen.  His talent will win games on talent alone but does anyone expect them to beat Oregon this weekend or Ohio State ever?

5. PJ Fleck - At some point PJ has to try to win at a place where he can recruit to.  He will never have the talent in Minnesota and they are just happy making it to a bowl game every year.  PJ on the other hand is not for every school.

I don't know what to make of Matt Rhule, Barry Odom, Jonathan Smith, and David Braun yet.  I know Greg Schiano, Mike Lockley, and Jedd Fisch all can coach but do they have the resources to compete in this environment?  I know UCLA doesn't.

Look at a program like Clemson and Dabo.  They have had incredible success there.  At the start of the year many had predicted Clemson to challenge for a National Championship, they lost to Syracuse at home this weekend and are now 1-3.  As Dabo has never been a fan of the transfer portal.

College Football has become a professional minor league to the NFL.  Curt Cignetti, a no name coach comes out of nowhere and takes Indiana to the playoffs last year.   Then just rolls the #9 team in the nation like they were playing Indiana State.  He reloaded his offense with CAL's QB and they are off again with an easy non-conference and limited exposure Big Ten schedule.  They have Iowa this weekend but will have to travel to Oregon and Penn State later this Fall.   Curt seems to be a very arrogant head coach like that guy at your golf club that says he has the talent to be on the PGA Tour if he just had two good knees.   With all that said, he took Indiana to the playoff last year.   Which is just insane.

  • I think Biff should do all the press conferences and interviews from here on out.

Interesting comment by Bob that the "NIL" has spread the talent pool from a few "big time" college programs to many more participating schools. If so, this is quite a positive for the "NIL". My thinking was opposite (but I believe Bob is correct because of the results. Also, the Big Ten is at least on par now with the SEC > whereas payments to players was rampant rumors for decades. The NCAA should of addressed this payment problem in the 80's or 90's instead of college football changing over-night and not becoming the pandemonium and chaos that we are experiencing now.

I hate NIL and everything about it. I myself lost interest in college football like bowl of corn flakes. I wish we can go back to it was at least somewhat. NCAA committee needs to some limits on NIL and the whole transfer portal....that is a joke...
