Wolverine Wednesday: Wonders if Big AL Watches TV

Football coaches live and breathe football 24/7.  They spend all day thinking about game plans and how to teach their kids how to be better football players.   During the off season they will visit other programs or NFL teams to pick up coaching tips or ways to make their own program better.

During the season these coaches are heads down on their own program and really only study their teams current or future opponents.   That's why the coaches poll is so funny.  They don't watch other teams outside their league, which means they have no business ranking other football teams.

This got me thinking about Big Al Borges and how he has managed the Michigan offense the last two seasons.  He has done some good things with Denard and he has done some dumb things.   There have been 4 or 5 game plans that really make no sense at all.    I think Big Al is a pretty good football guy and has more football knowledge then I ever will, but is he watching TV?

One of the things that fans have over football coaches is perspective from watching football across the country.   We see what Oregon is doing, does Big Al know?   We see how the Redskins are using RG3 in the NFL, does Big AL have the Red Zone channel?  These are the things that drive fans crazy.   Michigan has one of the most electric QB's in the history of our 900 win program for 6 or 7 more games and we watch the same handful of plays over and over.

I understand Denard's strength and weakness but there has to be more.   There has to be better options other then throwing a bomb to our second string QB once a game and pulling the ball from Fitz 50 times a game.   MSU had pretty much everyone in the box and we continued to try to run the ball.

My last point is the redzone offense.  Big Al needs to figure out a way to score touchdowns against strong defenses.  We have two touchdowns (outside the redzone) against Alabama and none against ND and MSU.   Big Al, you might think watching other programs is hurting your program by taking away the time you work on the Michigan offense.  It actually might be the exact thing you need to be a bit more creative in the next 7 games.

  • Green has been very quiet since his visit.  I don't know if that is a good or bad sign.

  • Treadwell didn't make it up on Saturday but said he is not doing anymore official visits during football season but Michigan will get one after his season is finished.  He was scheduled to be in Oklahoma this weekend but has cancelled it.

  • Fitz got 10 months probation for his OWI.

  • Tim McCormick tweets from Michigan B-Ball practice:  First impression @umichbball most talent since the Fab Five - 5 legit NBA prospects 11 deep tremendous size loaded with athletes on the wing.  That sounds good!

Agreed! Our offense is anemic at times, but brillant at others -- the 1 back set with Tousant running east/west cuts isn't working and is easy to predict..run N/S and run hard with a two back set! I still can't beleive we lost to ND, and almost lost to MSU? Killing me, Denard went from Heisman candiate to non-mention, our offense was great/defense sucked under RR to just the opposite now? What gives...seems every team knows to bum rush Denard, and it's killing our momentum; go with two tight ends if needed. Go BLUE!

i'm back.... lionman, hey coach.

It starts with defense and we have that. AB has been DR kryptonite. For the last 2 years he has done things to make DR look bad. AB knows what he's doing.

The 1st few series in a game you see what the defense is doing and you take what they are giving you. AB seems to go against the grain, which has hurt DR as a great qb. I don't trust his play calling and Hoke should step in. Everyone can see whats going on and we know that we are better than that and we, MICHIGAN, are a top 10 team. AB has made a deal with someone to keep us in a hole, I call it conspiracy. (pissed at this point)

To finish....... last year we should have been undefeated, but thanks to bad play calling by AB we dropped to. Actually i believe we could have played in the NC game, no thanks to AB. This year, the 1st game shouldn't have been so bad of a lost. The 2nd lost, was on AB as well with the play call. The close win was AB wanting to run, when it wasn't there and the pass was.

Dear AB, take what the defense is giving you and let Denard be denard aka a great MICHIGAN WOLVERINE.

Hey MAAB...we are all tracking to the same scent here -- bad play calling. I've always felt Denard would win the Heisman, and he deserves it -- he's gotten the holy crap kicked out of him as our QB and he keeps fighting and smiling; it's almost a shame with what he's had to deal with in his time at Michigan. Does everyone remember being so very grateful when he announced his decsion to stay on when Hoke was hired. I pray he goes off on Nebraska this week, and sets a few more records with the remaining 6 games. Go Blue!

Agreed! As I stand by my thoughts of AB is pulling the strings he knows DR strengths and weaknesses, so play to the strengths and take what defenses give you.

To Mr. Mattison, thank you for coming home!!!!!

Don't see the brilliance in Big Al's play-calling. Any brilliance seems to emanate from the usual source -- Denard -- DESPITE the play-calling. (Maybe Borges SHOULD watch more TV!)

Toussant should not be playing as much. Game-time performance should matter -- not just how hard he practices. Big time players make big time plays. Give someone else a chance.

This goes for Borges as well. Let's face it, Mattison has outperformed Borges by a large margin. He's done a great job. Borges, not so much.
