Much Too Hard

Brady Hoke must think he is still in the MAC because his Michigan teams seem to play like Ball State when a MAC opponent comes into town.   Miami University has the longest loss streak in the nation at 18 games coming into the Big House this afternoon.   Michigan made them look like Minnesota or something, playing them close for nearly 3 quarters.

A win is a win, but does anyone feel like nothing has changed since last season?  I'm looking for progress each time this team takes the field, I can't say I saw a ton of it today.  Let's get right to the cheers and jeers:

Cheers

  • Welcome back Jake Butt, Why in the world doesn't DG look for him more?
  • Darboh had a nice game, minus the fumble
  • The defense only allowed points on Michigan turnovers when Miami had field position
  • Green ran hard and got over 100 yards
  • The Michigan offense seems much more effective out of the shotgun
  • The Oline played pretty well, not great but not terrible
  • Garnder ran well today, but looked a bit tentative in the passing game like he was "aiming" his throws
  • Michigan won the game
Jeers
  • Michigan's safety depth now seems like a big issue
  • Funchess ankle still looks bad
  • The drive at the end of half time was a complete coaching cluster f***.  Getting a delay of game was bad enough.  Then you punt? What does punting get you?  Nothing.  Be aggressive and play to win Hoke.  Terrible decision.
  • What happened to the Gardner 3 step drop and quick throws we saw against App. State?
  • Michigan lost the turnover battle 3-1.  Miami turned the ball over 6 times last weekend.
  • Michigan seems very vanilla on offense right now
A win is a win but this was much too difficult for the Wolverines today.  A good Utah team is coming in next week and if Michigan doesn't improve in the next 6 days they will have a hard time winning that game.   Michigan kept one of the worst teams in D1 in the game today with 3 turnovers and an offense that wasn't consistent.

Brother I'm a fan....enjoy your daily blogs...let me start off by saying I'm happy we won...my biggest fear is that we become...TENNESSEE, MIAMI, FLORIDA,TEXAS....totally irrelevant in collage football....are we sure Brady can make us relevant???? I worry our high school recruits....the life blood of football teams will stay....I just want us a Big 10 power...I know this year it means so little..but as a hardcore fan... This is quickly entering RICH FRAWD territory

Positives today:
*The defense.
*Peppers looks like a lockdown corner. He's fearless.
*Green actually ran with some BURST today for the 1st time. I thought he played really well.
*Butt's return. He's a difference maker.
*Did anyone else notice Hurst at FB on goal-line O?
*Morris looked pretty good in his short stint.
*Ryan played another good game in the middle.
*Darboh will be a solid compliment to Funch.
*Lewis got a pick.

Negatives:
*Countess got beat on the slant again today. he didn't learn from last week.
*Turnovers (again).
*All RBs not named Green looked like crap.
*Chesson is not going to ever be a solid player for us.
*Hollaway got beat for the TD AGAIN. He's atrocious.

I know everyone is down on Hoke. He's bringing in talent. I just think that the OLine recruits that are now starting to be upperclassmen were a bit overrated in HS. Funk needs to go. I said it here before, if the OLine gets fixed, then a lot of our problems go away. We HAVE skill players. We HAVE a defense. ND didn't impress me as they routinely picked on our 4th & 5th string CB's. Hoke will turn this thing around as the OLine continues to improve.

The cheers are things Michigan is supposed to do against much inferior talent. I am not going to get excited until they can replicate these performances against real FBS talent for consecutive games, especially on the road.

Michigan needs to increase the intensity, focus, and competitiveness in their game. I believe it all starts at the top. The current coaching staff, specifically Hoke, hasn’t shown it. They need a coach that is extremely competitive. There is also obsession with perfection that great coaches have. They demand it and if expectations aren’t met there is accountability.

They need somebody that has the same mentality as Saban, Harbaugh, or the laid back Pete Carroll. Who that is, I am not sure yet. I have some coaches in mind, but I have to see how the season plays out. Whoever that is will give Michigan the swagger and confidence it lacks and that the elite teams have because right now I don’t see a lot of emotion right now. They come across as weak and nice. They need to get a mean streak, especially in the trenches.

I couldn't agree more.... I can't help but admit that i feel exactly the same way, right now, as i did at the end of last season.

After the disappointing conclusion to the last two seasons... to see the team come out NOT ready to play against ND, to see the team come out and not dominate Miami of Oh..... the Brady train is not on the tracks here... and his vanilla coach talk has outstayed its welcome.
Brady might be enough of a coach to have taken over a program from Carr, and continued to operate... but he is proving week in and week out that he doesn't have what it takes to lift up a fallen program.
When Michigan isn't seen as a program that can come out and compete against any team, any Saturday, that isn't Michigan football.

I believe this season will not be any easier to watch than last season was, sadly. I hope I'm wrong, but then again I would like to have something change that for me.

The bright spot was Shane Morris, making two great passes, on the run.. unfortunately they were both dropped, but he looked confident, threw a rope.. I think he needs to be handed the keys.

Wow....What a great halftime performance - Whomever orchestrated the entire halftime with many different groups working so well together did one hell of a job!!! In contrast the football team seems to have many different groups working totally independently with nobody running the show...I would assume that Hoke plays this role, but there seems to be a void. Clock management is abysmal and the only reason to go to special teams on 2 or 3 occasions this year would be to do a fake (ala our little brothers who's desperate specialties play off of each other. I really think that Hoke needs to go and Mattison or Nussmeier need to be interim for the rest of the year - I'm sure that either could orchestrate the football TEAM better.

And, finally send our O-line to Barwis (voluntary of course) to toughen them up..They were again pushed around at times and couldn't get that yard or two when they should have been able to!
