Michigan Monday: Needs A Bye Week

David Guralnick / Detroit News
The Wolverines will get some rest this week and have a chance to work on some fundamentals on both sides of the ball.   In the NFL going into a bye week is the time to fire your coach.  You just saw another example with the Raiders.   Brady Hoke who doesn't seem to be too nervous about his job, doesn't have to worry about that action until probably the end of the year.   Michigan won on Saturday but all is not well in Ann Arbor.  Michigan still needs 3 wins to even play in a bowl game.   Michigan is not expected to win at MSU or OSU so that leaves 3 wins against IU, (at) NW and Maryland.

Injuries also seem to be a problem:

QB: Shane and Devin both have ankle issues.
RB: Green out for the year
TE: Butt is coming back from an ACL and Khalid Hill tore his ACL in practice this week.

Willie Henry didn't play on Saturday
Pipkins is out with an some type of injury
Peppers has a "leg" injury and continues to miss games
Jehu Chesson the team's second leading WR was not dressed on Saturday
Desmond Morgan and safety Delano Hill are also injured and haven't played in a number of games.

Let's hope Michigan has some of these guys back for the short trip to East Lansing in two weeks.
  • Michigan coaching target Dan Mullen is now coaching the #1 ranked team in the nation.
  • David Molk had a nice game last night for the Eagles.  Great to see him back in the league after sitting out a year.
  • Steve Schilling also started at center for the Seahawks.
  • Taylor Lewan had his first NFL start for the Titans.
  • Thomas Rawls ran for 270 yards on Saturday for Central.  He has had a tough year off the field but a good year on the field.  He rushed for 229 yards the week prior against Ohio.

The disproportionate number of ACL injuries under the Wellman regime vs. Barwis is staggering (16 to 3? based on some quick research) from all of the data that can see. What is it in a good S&C program that prevents ACL injuries? Not sure about ACL's, but definitely give Wellman part of the blame for the O and D lines looking bad against inferior talent. Here is what Barwis is doing now (S&C for New York Mets); http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2014/10/mets_name_mike_barwis_to_run_strength_conditioning_program.html

I am a strength and conditioning coach and there are definitely some stretches and lifts that you want to focus on that strengthen the muscle surrounding the ligaments, but the main concern is using correct form and avoiding the ones that put you at risk. Using correct form is at the greatest importance (for example making sure that a lifters knees are straight while squatting) and avoiding tough high impact lifts that put unnecessary strain on the ligaments. At the end of the day however, I think Michigan is just had some bad luck with injuries. The football Gods have not been nice. Luckily for Michigan, Hoke and staff have built up some depth at each position or believe it or not I think this season would be even worse.
