Michigan Monday: Sometimes Sports Doesn't Make Any Sense

Michigan and Northwestern played one of the worst college football games a week ago that I ever remember watching.   It was a comedy of errors of fumbles, missed field goals and 4th down attempts.   I'm not sure either offense could score 3 touchdowns if they were on the field by themselves.

Dateline:  9/6:  Michigan travels to South Bend and gets shut out 31-0 on the last schedule match-up between the two rivals.

Dateline: this past Saturday:  Northwestern travels to South Bend at 3-6 and with at offense ranked 113th in the country in scoring points.   ND is ranked #18 in the country after losing to Arizona State the week before.  ND is also an 18 point favorite against the lowly Wildcats.  Northwestern wins in OT 43-40.

Explanation?   I don't have one.   I guess that's why they play the games.

Frank Clark had seemed to have turned his life around.   He came to Ann Arbor as a 6-2, 228 pound DE in 2011.  That is pretty skinny for a DE but his talent got him on the field as a freshman.  As a freshman, he even made an interception in the Sugar Bowl which lead to a TD.

He ran into trouble between his freshman and sophomore years when he stole another students laptop.  He agreed to pay just under $1800 for the laptop and got a one year probation.  He was penalized by the team as well.

Fast forward to this year, his senior year.  He is now 277 pounds and considered one of the best DE's in the country.  He has had 4.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss.   He just had a game saving sack against Northwestern last weekend when the Wildcats decided to play for the win and go for a 2 points after a late TD.    This has been by far his best year on the field and was headed for a nice NFL draft pick.

This weekend those plans got blown up on what seemed to be a mini vacation in a hotel in Ohio.  I expect Brady Hoke to address the media on this topic during his Monday press conference.   That is assuming Clark is out of jail and has spoken with coach.

Other News:

  • Michigan - Maryland on BTN 3:30 Kick

  • Ian Rapoport an NFL reported tweeted that Stephen Ross is more interested in having "Jimmy" at Michigan then in Miami.  If this is accurate, that is good news.

  • In a few posts, I have been detailing the best way for Michigan to separate with Coach Hoke.   Almost that exact example is happening at Florida.   If Michigan beats Maryland on Saturday, then Brady should resign the Monday after the OSU game and be allowed to coach the bowl game.   The Florida example happened with a few games left in the season.

A couple thoughts on Florida and Michigan looking for a head coach at the same time.

-It's clear who Michigan's top target is.
-Both programs could compete for candidates if "Jimmy" stays in the NFL.
-Names that might be on both lists probably include:  Dan Mullen and Bob Stoops
-Will Muschamp lost this weekend but was coming off a big win against Georgia the game before.
- Florida has had issues with hiring DC's that haven't had head coaching experience.   Muschamp and Zook.
- There are rumors that RR is on Florida's list.   Be careful hiring an offensive guy after firing your defensive head coach.

It is a shame to see such a talented football player throw away what could have been a very promising future in the NFL.

For me it is Jimmy H, Mullen, Miles, a few unspecified big name coaches (none from the Big 12 where they play basketball on grass), and then Herman.

I think RR would be a good fit for them, especially if Casteel follows him to Gainesville.
