Michigan Thursday: David Never Got Offered

The problem with twitter is, if you have a name people recognize, you can pretty much say anything. Gil Brandt tweeted that Michigan had offered Duke's David Cutcliffe.  Which means it instantly hit Sports Radio and other media outlets that Duke's head coach turned down Michigan and Jimmy must be off the board.    It also made credible insiders to ask Duke and David to find out if it was true or not.   It ended up not being true at all.    Thanks Gil for throwing the Wolverines under the bus.

The big shocker of the day and the best hire of the "season" by far was Oregon State hiring Wisconsin coach Gary Anderson.   So what is going on at Wisconsin that they keep winning but losing coaches left and right.   Is it they don't pay their assistants (this is what Bielema said going out the door two years ago) or is Barry Alvarez really hard to work for?

If your wondering how Michigan ranks in paying assistants?  #9 at about $3.5M a year.   Guess who is #1?  I'm sure many of your already knew that LSU pays their assistants over $5.3 a year.

Now there are questions, which job is a better job?  Please.   These are the names on Wisconsin's list of candidates:  Greg Schiano, Paul Chryst, Dave Clawson, Justin Fuente, Matt Wells and Dave Aranda.    I know two names on the list.   Dave Clawson is the head coach at Wake Forrest,  Justin Fuente is the head coach at Memphis,  Matt Wells is the head coach at Utah State,  Dave Aranda is the DC at Wisconsin (can you get a head coaching gig after that Big Ten Championship performance?).

I would love for Wisconsin to take Greg Schiano off the board, so he can stop being tied to Michigan's search.  I think Paul Chryst, Pitt head man is the clear leader in the clubhouse.   Or Seahawks OC and former Wisconsin QB Darrell Bevell.

  • Mike Weber committed to Ohio State.  Ok, good luck there.  Michigan doesn't have any depth issues at RB right now.   I think the new coaches will be able to get a solid back in this class in January.

  • Scout's Jamie Newberg reports that Jim Mora, Dan Mullen, Bob Stoops, and Butch Jones have all said, no thanks to the search firm.  I would guess that Jim and Bob would be no's.   I think if Michigan came with a big offer Dan and/or Butch would change their minds.   I have a feeling Butch was never a serious candidate.

If there is a silver lining in the idiotic reporting (Dave Cutcliffe was offered the MI job and declined) that is leaking out.... it is that after a few of these totally false reports are leaked, make their rounds and are outed as total fabrications, the drumbeats should quiet down and possibly let the process play out as it should.

Pelini would seem to be a pretty good hire for WS, if he wants to work for B.A. It isn't like he hasn't had success, and WS might need some defensive help, if their last game was any indication.
