Tuck Leaving With an L

Kaytie Boomer | MLive.com

These games are not good for my health for 3-4 hours every year.  I still wouldn't trade it for anything.

Things happen when these two teams get together that seem not to make any sense.  For example, MSU was playing really well on offense early in the first half.  Coleman was making great catches (even though he pushed off for the TD) and it was giving Michigan's coverage a ton of problems.   Then in the 2nd half they decided to go to tempo, which clearly they weren't good enough to run and started to struggle.  Or going for it on 4th down twice and run it directly into Michgian's defensive line.

Michigan had its own head scratchers.  How is it, everyone in the country passes on MSU secondary but Michigan has trouble with it?  Off sides on a punt and a kick-off return?  Or not being aggressive to score TD's when they dominated the game.  I know Jimmy likes this grind it out, wear on the opponent style, but damn get it in the end zone! Our health is at stake! :-)

Lots of good and bad in this game and the reasons we do the famous Cheers and Jeers:

Cheers:

  • Blake Corum is just great, ran it 33 times for 177 yards
  • Michigan's offensive line won this game
  • Jesse Minter's 2nd half adjustments on defense was huge
  • JJ ran for a few important 1st down's
  • Michigan punted once
  • The D-line played well and shut the MSU rush game down
  • Moody = Money
  • Michigan let MSU make the dumb personal foul penalties
  • Defense pitched a 2nd half shut out
  • Schoonmaker had a nice day catching the ball

Jeers:
  • Michigan's offense near the goal line looked confused
  • JJ struggled a bit with a few throws
  • Play calling in the red zone was not great
  • MSU had the lead for a hot minute
  • Cornelius Johnson had a tough game
  • Michigan's pass rush was again too inconsistent
  • Michigan should have scored 40-50 points
  • Game was too close for comfort
  • MSU's offense had -1 yards in the 2nd half, until the late long pass
  • Michigan's secondary gave up 215 yards in the air.  155 just to Coleman

Let's address the fight in the tunnel.  We don't know the entire story yet, but it looks really bad for MSU on the video.  There could even be criminal charges filed.  I hope the Michigan players are ok, reports are there may be a broken nose.  The #1 if the video was not East Lansing native Andrel Anthony but Ja'Den McBurrows.

Mel Tucker may need to check himself a bit.  The "Tuck is coming" meme and saying Michigan can't cover his WR's is just stupid and a great way to motivate the Wolverines.  When you don't have the talent to play against the Wolverines, you don't need to run your mouth.  It also gives your team the mindset that they can assault the other team's players off the field.  He should be suspended by the Big Ten for being the leader of that type of activity.   MSU leadership should be looking for ways to get out of that huge contract.

At the end of the day, Michigan was the better team and everyone knows it.  Game over and Paul is back where he belongs.

To me is what will Tucker do about the assault(s) that took place: Will he immediately condemn the MSU participants and suspend them indefinitely and condemn their actions. Or will Tucker be a coward and try to duck the "oncoming investigation, and even try to defend his players by saying the Michigan player taunted the players. I chose the latter (Tucker is a "chump coward", and the big contract will be like the Charlie Weis contract fiasco at ND (as per Mike).
Also, Michigan man said that Mikes call for a severe beat down was a bit high ... Did Michigan Man earn a guest speaker's spot on the Blog?

We were the better team by far last year, too.

My two biggest worries about this team are passing beyond 10-15 yards, and our secondary. Both need to improve if we are to beat Ohio. I’m no longer thinking/hoping we’ve been holding back on the passing game. Anyone have a stat on how many +20 yard attempts for the year? Seems like should be less than 10…

It was sad what happened to two of our players... I hope they are okay and doing well and those sparty players that were involved I hope NCAA come down hard on them... Win is it win I'll take it even though I was nervous throughout the whole game... We got four more to go guys...good luck...

I'll be heading back to Dubai this week... Should be back in time for Michigan Ohio State game I got the tickets

Scttoy-Doggg yes I did...my prediction and analysis was based on Michigan's average score in Big ten... Knowing that this is a rivalry game and it will be a bit more intense and emotional the score would be relatively closer than either team blowing each other out... I would love for Michigan to blow everybody out cuz that's what a great team does... Or should do... They reached my expectation several years ago I said I will take 8 to 10 wins every year... Anything beyond that is icing and cake

I am no spring chicken myself but look at the "half-hearted, feeble attempt for the aged cop to intervene in the "beat-down" ... totally unacceptable. An old cop is almost useless, there timing is off and are weak > more worried about their upcoming shuffleboard game.

For me, the 2 OC thing isn't working. Sure, we're going to beat most if not all the teams that we have a significant talent advantage. But against equal or more talented teams, its going to bite us in the ass. Don't care if it was GA last year or perhaps it'll be OSU this year. You can't get into the RZ that many times and come away with only FGs. I'd love to see the offense do what Minter is doing on defense. Have a plan going into the game specifically for that opponent and then have the wherewithal to make the appropriate adjustments at halftime. To me, Michigan comes out and runs its offensive playbook, no matter who they are playing, no matter what the opponent does well or doesn't do well. It's the "We're Michigan" thing and it drives me nuts. Part of it is because I'm going to hear from my MSU friends about how it was so close and they coulda and shoulda won. yeah they're delusional but they are MSU fans.

Something is not working however if it's the OC position I can't say because I don't know how their system works. But it does seem to be the play called becomes anemic once we get in the red zone. Go figure.

One thing that's curious to me as far as the assault or so-called assault in the tunnel is that immediately after the game the players and coaches were celebrating with each other and congratulating each other, then they went over and got Paul and paraded him over to the student section and sang the victors a couple of times and celebrated with them, and then hung around on the field for a few minutes doing interviews and such. My question is, why were there so many Michigan State guys still in the tunnel after all that time? What did they have to hang around for? I tried to listen to Tucker after the game during his interview but I couldn't understand through his mumbling. I'm curious what was said in the Detroit papers today about the game and the MSU homers..

It appears that the assault of the two lone Michigan players by the gang of MSU players were as a result of the vitrial that was created by the coaching staff. It was said that with half of the MSU players being from other schools then they needed to "understand the rivalry" so Mel Tucker schooled them on the reason why they should hate Michigan, for example Michigan reportedly voted against admitting MSU into the B1G conference years ago, etc.

It is clear that the team is a reflection of their coaches, even Dantonio was preaching anti-Michigan hatred which resulted in dirty aggressive play. It seems to me that the MSU program has severely crossed the line this time and that Michigan, the players and their families should prosecute MSU to the fullest extent of the law, while suing the MSU coaches administration, players and their families (and if appropriate the B1G if they don't address this severely).

MSU should minimally be suspended by the NCAA with serious consideration of their school receiving the death penalty just like SMU (Southern Methodist University) years ago. Why? because the staff is promoting such hatred that it is causing their players to commit felonious assaults against other players. People have been paralyzed, received severe brain damage (organic brain syndrome) and even killed as a victim of this type of assault. There are people serving time in prison because they've crossed the line like this. So no, it's not overkill because this type of behavior is dangerous and should be addressed once and for all. Tucker should be fired for cause and like Tressel not be encouraged to coach D-1 football. IMHO!!!

I agree, our red zone offense is bad. But I’m not sure who is really calling the plays. If it is really our two headed OC then someone needs to be relieved of duties and have one person.

I kinda wonder if it is Harbaugh. Half our trips in red zone yesterday it’s like we didn’t try to score a touchdown. Very conservative. I am wondering if Jimmy realized the only way we lose is if we beat ourselves. So he was accepting 3 points because that is better than a turnover.

It frustrates the crap out of fans. But he got the W and he doesn’t care about pretty.

If we were trying to score touchdowns and we are really that bad, well, we have some work to do to compete with the elite teams of college football.
