Wolverine Wednesday: An MSU Rumor

The rumor mill is spinning on Urban Meyer having interest in the Michigan State head coach opening.  The report is saying he will be in East Lansing this week, both sides have interest, and he will be interviewing for the position.  Remember when I said, MSU needed a squeaky-clean person as its next head coach after Tucker and Dantonio?  Like the "John Beilein" of college football.  This is not it.  In fact, it's the complete opposite of that.

I believe this is a reporter trying to make a name for himself.  I would be very surprised if Urban even considered East Lansing.  He is not going to a place where Nick Saban failed at.  I also would be shocked if MSU even seriously considered him, as it's a terrible look after the Tuck scandal.  Brady Quinn and Joel Klatt who work with Urban every week, think the report is not accurate.

  • Now we know that Cade has an ACL and clearly out for the year.  "His intention is to come back and play next year again," Ferentz said. "So that’ll be great. It’s a long road in front of him, but it’s a lot better than it was 30 years ago, that’s for sure. A lot more predictable. And he’s got a great attitude and he’ll work hard at it."  Iowa has now lost its best TE and starting QB for the year with injuries.  Which is not good news for one of the worst offenses in college football.

  • The USA Today coaches' salaries report came out again.  Harbaugh is #12 @ $8.2M per.  Saban is #1 with over $11M per year.  Tuck was #5 at $10M.  Time for a new contract for Harbaugh.

You can never rule out the ego factor, but I always take the talk about a coach coming out of the studio and back to the side lines with a grain of salt. It typically doesn't go well: See Sean Peyton! Coaching is a grind, where being a studio personality is easy money. Unkle Urby already took a shot at coming back and it failed miserably! The NFL is a different animal from college and his abrasive style doesn't play well in the league. Problem is college football is quickly becoming NFL lite with the NIL and TP.

Urban to MSU would be an incredibly interesting experiment in mediocrity meets conspicuous sleaze, in a way that few organizations have ever tried. The video of him grabbing that lady's butt would be shown to all recruits moms, I'm sure.

The Cryer wouldn't take the sparty job, in his mind that's beneath him. And other than Lane Kiffin, is there a bigger dbag sleaze they could pick? I don't think Sparty will get a top-shelf coach, their brand is too tarnished and they'll never be #1 even in their own state. As soon as the season is over, the coaching carousel begins so it behooves Spartacus crapacus to try and beat the rush, sign someone before they get a better offer. Will they go ugly early? yep....faster than a parolee in a dive bar.
