Michigan Monday: Searches For Answers

Michigan enters its bye week a broken team.  They are 4-2 at the halfway point of the season and had 15 players on the Out or Questionable list prior to Saturday's game. Michigan's expected very good to elite defense has been average due to Wink's schemes and lack of depth due to injuries.

The offense expected to run wild has struggled to run when it matters behind an inexperienced and injured offensive line.   If that were the only problems, Michigan would be ok.  The number one issue still remains, who the hell is the QB of this team?  The problem that was identified as soon as JJ said, goodbye.   In fact, I'm sure the coaches knew even before that.

What do we do with that information?  Even a person that doesn't follow this team, knows Orji is not a passer, he never has been.  Davis Warren has zero experience and it was clear in the Harbaugh era that he was not an option for a game, since the only time we saw him was in the Spring Game.  The leaves journeyman Jack Tuttle in his 7th year of college football.  Jack has been at Utah, IU, and now Michigan.  Is he a surgeon by now?  I knew Jack could throw and wouldn't be nervous playing, what I also knew was that Jack turns the ball over.  Which he did.  Michigan wouldn't have even been in the game if not for Jack and might have lost it due to Jack.  That is really Jacked up.

So now what? Since the playoffs are not an option and Michigan will only be favored in 2 of the last 6 games they play.  What should Sherrone do?  Did Sherrone cause this problem by not finding a QB in the portal?  Michigan clearly didn't recruit enough QB's and that has been a multiple year issue.

This job doesn't come with a honeymoon period and Sherrone needs one.  He has made some bad mistakes and would probably be fired at the end of the season if he wasn't in his first year at Michigan and his first year as a head coach.  The team is not getting better it fact with the injuries, its getting worse.  Its too early to ask this but, "Is this job too big for Sherrone?"

The coaches have many decisions to make to keep this train on the track this week.
  1. Is it time to play the freshman Jadyn Davis at QB?  Yes, you would be punting on the season but you have to start to consider the future at some point this year.
  2. Wink is not a good fit for this program.  If I were Warde or Sherrone, I would let him go this week and give the interim DC duties to the guy Jesse Minter recommended who is on staff.
  3. Try to keep Will, Kenny, and Mason from making a "business decision".   I hate this but all 3 are looking to go very high in the NFL Draft and if Michigan continues to lose, they will have to consider that option.
  4. Do you bench a captain in Safety Markai Paige?
Ok, I can hear some of you saying at your screens,  Bob you are too negative.  Tell me something good!

Fair enough:
  1. Michigan did make a nice comeback.  This offense has to pass to run.  If Michigan can throw accurate 5-15 yard routes, they could have an effective offense.
  2. I left Ernie off the Cheers by mistake, his pick and play has really improved.
  3. We have an elite field goal kicker, who I believe has one more year of eligibility left.
  4. Michigan did try to get the ball to Edwards in the passing game
  5. Mullins is still a really good RB
  6. Walker had a nice catch!  (its his Birthday today!)
  7. Guy continues to improve
  8. Stewart had another sack!

  • Many Michigan Men were getting hurt yesterday in the NFL.  On the list includes: Dax Hill, Nico Collins, and Jake Moody.
  • Michigan dropped to #24
  • The hits just keep comin:  Peppers arrested on assault and drug charges on Sunday.

Sherrone needs 6-8 years of seasoning to become a qualified head coach. Michigan is not a place for developing head coaches. Warde better have a list of candidates ready, and Urban should be on top of that list.

I had dreams/nightmares of Shane Morris playing with a concussion and Brady Hoke clapping like a seal. Make it stop. Please make it stop!!

Guys I am back from Dubai...I didn't see the game I came back Sunday night...Read everyone's post and there were lot of great thoughts and Ideas....Jayden Davis should get in after 3 or 4 lost...If I was a coach I wait for the 4th one.....

Brady I think you and I are the only two fools think Uncle Urban should be our next head coach.....

Why WOULDN'T you hire Urban? Guy wins Championships.

From the controversial hiring of former Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle -- and his almost immediate resignation -- to the incident in a Columbus, Ohio, restaurant with a woman and run-ins with his staff and players, Meyer's time with the Jaguars was marked by one on- and off-field incident after another. Damn lets get him signed...

The only job Urban Liar is good for would be teaching Lap Dancing

MichiganMan said...

It has nothing to do with his coaching...those are off the field issues...what he does in his personal life has nothing to do with football...if and only if he is hired same fools who are bashing him will praise him at the end....let GO UNCLE MYERS....or other option is Les Miles or Brian Kelly or Linclon Riley...or how about Ryan Day!!

Anyone who would want him shows me their lack of character...

Bob you're the blue bird of happiness compared to me. I know, I know, Scotty will be shocked to hear this. So does anyone else think that if they don't give Moore his walking papers that this is only going to get worse and drive the program back to the dark days of RichRod? Many have said it, this is not a learn on the job gig. You gotta have your shit together to be the HC at the University of Michigan. That's not Moore, not right now.

Hate being the bearer of bad news (not really) but anyone that thinks Jack Tuttle is the savior is going to be disappointed. He's a career back up who's majored in carrying a clipboard. In 7 seasons he's managed to be injured 8 of them.

Chowman said...

Hell yes you give Jadyn Davis a whirl! Gotta see if there's anything there or you hitting the portal hard with the Dave Portnoy money. I think you have to find a least 1 QB in the TP in the offseason. Just a question if its a starter or quality depth guy. Tuttle will be signing up for social security, think Davis Warren is also done. If not, he should be at Michigan. Jayden Denegal has been MIA. He still with the team? Milk carton anyone? And Alex Orji should be introduced to the TEs coach and if he refuses, then show him how the portal works!

Chowman said...

I know this won't be a popular take (hell are any of my takes popular with you mates), but if I'm advising Mason Graham or Kenneth Grant or WJ I'm telling them maybe its time to pull the plug and just work out for your pro day/combine! Why risk a catastrophic injury for this!

Chowman said...

And just when you thought I couldn't bloviate anymore: Wink Martindale. Now do you guys see what Bob and I have been talking about? Why when Baltimore and then NY Giants told him "please leave" that none of the other 30 NFL teams bothered to pick up the phone and kick the tires! The D is good to very good when the front 4 are getting pressure, when Winky needs to blitz, its been a lot of big plays for the opposition. He telegraphs his blitzes. Not only do they know its coming, but they know from where. The guys that show blitz are actually blitzing. No disguising anything.

Chowman said...

Hard no on Unkle Urbs! College football landscape changed since he's been gone, plus I doubt he wants to leave his cush gig as a TV analyst. Easy money, no stress!

Chowman said...

Not just that. His offense had gotten stale toward the end. He had to hand the keys of the offense to Ryan Day to modernize the offense. And like I already said, why leave the analyst studio where the money is easy.

ScottyDoggs said...

Your comments have been spot on, with a little humor sprinkled in ....Tuttle majored in carrying a clip board and show Orji the how the portal works was worth a few laughs .... I can't add to this so I defer to Chowman (you)to post.

It would be interesting to see what Davis has. But it wouldn't raise my expectation level for this team by any amount. How much can he play before he blows the red shirt?

Brady2017 said...

Best take yet. Yes, it WILL get worse. Warde needs to be putting a list together.

I know we have high character standards at UM, but I got news for you guys. If you think these guys coaching around the league are choir boys, you're in for a rude awakening. You don't hear anything because the spotlight isn't there looking. Who knew about the Les Miles issues and feud with Lloyd until he was almost hired? We need a real coach here. Sherrone ain't it.

szanreno said...

Are you kidding? No spotlight?!? What reporter wouldn't love to blow the lid off a major university like UM. OSU and MSU guys would be frothing at the mouth...

Brady2017 said...

If you wonder why Head Coaches usually bring their assistants with them, it's because they know and trust them. The new MSU coach brought almost everyone with him. H.C.s have to be in the heads of all their assistants at all times. If any of them fail, the H.C. fails.

Michigan has new guys coaching everywhere. Newsome was promoted from TEs to O Line, Campbell from QBs to Coordinator, Sherrone is new at H.C. It's a recipe for disaster.

Szanreno- You don't understand how small towns operate. They protect their own. They're not out to get the big scoop.

Brady2017 said...

Szanreno- research the SMU 'Death Penalty' case. The governor of Texas was in on things to boost the SMU program.

szanreno said...

I live in a small town. There are no secrets. C'mon. Hell sign-gate got its own Netflix special. Didn't amount to much, but they tried.

szanreno said...

And SMU got the lid blown off them now didn't they? Ann Arbor ain't no small town...

Chowman said...

Brady its not about his character for me. He just done! Don't see him coming back to college and if he does, Michigan would be the last school he'd come to. I'm good with that too! I just think the game started to pass him by and that pushed him out as much as anything else.

Szanreno: the season is done. I'm past a QB saving the season. I just want to see if Jadyn Davis has anything. The one thing that has always irked me being a fan of this program is the hype that knows no bounds. The media has been off the chain when it comes to hyping this team. I don't take any of that at face value anymore. I need to see with my own peepers if the guy is any good! Who can forget Joe Milton can throw the ball 70 yards from his knees! Great cause that's about how far he overthrew his receivers all the time!

Thom said...

Don't know what your smoking but I don't want any

Thom said...

Who cares if J. Davis blows his red shirt. He will probably be in the portal after the next QB hits Ann Arbor.

Chowman said...

That's a very real possibility!

Aimtubbs said...

no amount of desperation calls for Satan Meyer to be hired. He is human sewage no matter how much he wins on the field. Everywhere he's been he has won and at the same time, destroyed the culture of the program. Exception to Jacksonville where nobody can win.

Aimtubbs said...

If I were Davis, I'd want the opportunity to run the show the second half of the season. Why not? If he waits, he may find himself sitting behind a transfer portal QB next season cuz we know we are about to pay big $$ to get one. Best get in there now and try to win the job. Also, Wink isn't cut out for college sports. Just watching his presser today; he's too thin skinned to be questioned..."i've been at this 40 years"....yep, and you have regressed this defense. Absolutely no excuse for not being in the top 10 defensively with the talent on that squad. Being head coach is also knowing when to cut bait and let a coach go. Martindale and Campbell are not gonna cut it. Not one position coach is sticking out. DBs and Safety's regressed, D line and O line regressed. WR room is non existent. QB room....tumble weed blowing through.

Look I get there's hesitation to turnover the keys to the offense to a true freshman. Cool, then put him in a few series each game. They would put JJ in for a play or 2, which I HATE. If you're going to put someone in like that give him a series.
