Michigan Tuesday: Tuttle Time

I don't listen to Sherrone's radio show and sometimes read what he said during his regular press conference.  He learned from the master on not sharing anything relevant that your next opponent could use to their advantage.  Which means if a player is not seriously injured and out for the year, expect "he is working through something".  Which sounds like someone having a blister treated.

During his radio show on Monday, someone asked him: what the plan is at QB? He replied: "I think right now he (Tuttle) gives us the best chance to win. We'll continue to process that as an offense, as a team, but that looks like the direction we're heading."

He also added this: "The biggest priority for me is to make sure our run and pass game are complementary — formationally, structurally. ... I want to see more down-the-field shots, the play-action game come alive."

My follow up question would have been: What the hell have you been doing all summer?

I'm still at a loss for what the expectation was this summer?
  • Orji all of sudden becomes a passer?
  • An injured Tuttle?
  • Warren has zero experience playing college QB but he could be the answer?
Sherrone is lucky he is in his first year because not addressing this in the off season is a fireable offense.  He knew better then anyone Michigan had whiffed at QB recruiting the last 3 years.

PS: A rich Michigan Alumni needs to buy Wink out of his contract.

  • Peppers believes he is innocent of the situation he got into over the weekend.
  • Dak Hill has an ACL and is out of the year.
  • Detroit Tigers!!!
  • Moody has a high ankle sprain and the 49'ers have to sign a kicker

To me Moore/Campbell have been playing this game that I like to call QB roulette! They just spin the wheel and bet on the QB they think gives them the best chance to win. Problem is, we're on QB#3 who gives us the best chance to win. This just seems so happenstance, no plan. People want to give them a pass cause, wait for it: Tuttle was hurt again to start the season. Cool, what's the longterm plan cause Tuttle's on yr 7 and this is it for him. Jadyn Davis? Great, how about they give him the JJ treatment and give him a series a 2 a game to get his feet wet and so he's not completely green next season?

Someone said: You do not burn a red shirt until after 5 games, go with Davis then "try to have a future .... 2 out of three things can go bad though .... if he is a killer-bee, then he can hang his shingle on the portal and advertise he is battle tested and 4 years of eligibility. But you have to do it .....if he has no loyalty "so be it". He can also stink like the other quarterbacks, but then at least you know, and hit the portal. Is 6-6 look likely without Davis, maybe we get to play a Mac school, or Pioneer high!

I'm sorry, but I am growing tired of the whole "fireable offense" talk over the QB position. I also hate to say it, but usually there is a reason why a person is lower on the depth chart than another, and to merely say "they should have figured it out" as a cop out answer to me.

Do you have examples of QBs that Michigan rejected or should have taken in place of what we currently have? I feel like the biggest problem with the program is whether the university wants to have STUDENT athletes, or ATHLETES that are also students. Not saying you just get terrible academic guys in, but I feel like the University in the past has mainly been, we are an academic institution that would like to compete at sports, but not utilize all the tools that are technically available.

That is to say, looking over where we have been in the recruiting rankings as a team (looking at 247 Composite) - it ain't like we have been finishing top 5. Now with NIL, Michigan doesn't appear to want to play that game, or maybe they slightly do (which I would think is coming from the administration - whether the AD or Pres - b/c what coach doesn't want money for NIL). This leads me to believe that we are probably more development vs. 5 stars ready made freshman. This also leads me to believe that we are weaker in the transfer portal as well for NIL reasons (maybe a little with transfer credits too, but more NIL).

So.....who did Michigan fail to bring in that they could have at QB? I don't follow the ins/outs of recruiting, so just looking at last years QB transfers:
1. Saying: Alabama -> OSU
2. Chiles: Oregon SU -> MSU (same coach)
3. Moore: UCLA -> Oregon
4. Ward: WSU -> Miami
5. Vandagriff: Georgia -> UK (Go Cayuts)
6. Murphy: UT -> Duke
7. Howard: KSU -> OSU
8. Leonard: Duke -> ND
9. Mack: UW -> Alabama (same coach)
10. Rashada: ASU -> Georgia

I took a peak at some of the recruiting classes, Denegal was 19th ranked QB but was a 3 star. I get that stars are not 100% accurate, but I think still have some validity to them. If a kid doesn't want to come here, then what can the staff do about it. So I ask again, do you have specific names of QBs that Michigan rejected one way or another?

What if Jadyn isn't ready though? He was lower ranked than McCarthy - so maybe he isn't ready to play at all (which wouldn't be the craziest thing for a freshman). I do agree, I wonder about "would he really be much worse?" But for fans to talk about "Just put him in and see how it goes"....might be a reason why they haven't.

GBB: why I'm saying a series or 2 and not a whole half or whole game. If we had an adequate QB room, maybe I'd have a different take, but it's looking like our only functional QB is in his last season and frankly has proven to be very brittle!

Chowman said...

Scotty, I think we gotta hit the portal no matter what. QB room is garbage and at the very least you need some depth. But yes, see if he has anything. If he stinks, he stinks. If he's good, then you got the Portnoy money to waive in front of his face to get him to stay.

Chowman said...

GBB: guess that's what the University needs to decide what they want to be and let the fans know. If its about academics, then we can all lower are expectations and for me personally, not pay as much attention. The offset to that, is having a really good football program is a print press for money!!!! And if you come out and say, winnings not important, then some donors are going to say no to writing you checks. My issue is they act like the football program is the heart and soul of the institution, but then they want to dink around with the NIL. That's mixed messaging.

Some people will say what if you give a kid a big NIL and he's a bust? So what! Not my money! If some donors want to donate big money for big time players, that's on them!! You can't tell me a school like Michigan with its huge alumni base can't have a top 5 NIL program. If effing MSU can pay Chiles 7 figures, then there's no excuse for Michigan!

Michigan cannot stop anybody on third down when you have two of the worst cornerback in the country. Zach Berry and Jay Hill.... Defensive coordinator is not the problem. When your when your players don't play up to their standard it's nothing. A defensive coordinator can do bench those two idiots and bring somebody in who can do the job

Chowmain and if you fire Sharon Moore who are you hiring?

Go(Big)Blue said...

Chowman: I personally don't see what a series or two would really make a difference with. If he "balls out" - well.....that would really make me question the coaches ability to evaluate talent. If he stinks....well.....there is usually a reason why someone is lower on the depth chart.

If Portnoy is going to pay that 1-3 mil a year, I am all for it. Take it, and lets go.

I absolutely agree that I also think in the past the University gives mixed messages about how great our football team is, and it drives the university, but then also seems to be more about academics. Unfortunately for me, even if the University tries to take the stance of "we are an academic institution, not athletic factory", I still will want to win and be stuck in that emotional roller coaster.

I am curious to see how NIL keeps going. Do you get a write-off or anything for taxes by donating? or is it strictly just fandom? Portnoy giving 3 mil for a QB, what is the ROI? Maybe it doesn't matter, and he wouldn't look at it as a financial investment so to say.

Overall, its a frustrating year for sure. Absent the last three years, its been frustrating against OSU. I feel like the University handicaps the football team, and we can't compete year in, year out, with the OSUs/Alabamas/Georgias of the world over the course of 5-10 years. Either b/c of transfer credits from other schools not being accepted, or NIL reluctance.

As a build off of MM saying "who are you hiring" - man, I do wish we had the balls to have said Sherrone, you are the interim coach this year. We are gonna look around, but you could coach your way into the job. Along with recruiting, this is another area where I am not in deep with the research. I more just look at what other journalists/articles/people reference in those "top candidates to replace ______ with".

I forgot about Michigan paying to keep Davis ... good point!

Michigan Man: Barring Michigan going after a Dan Lanning or Kalen DeBoer which neither is leaving where they are right now. I thought if Michigan didn't hire Sherrone Moore, I'd of approached Jedd Fisch. Now would he leave Washington to come back to AA? Going to Arizona and winning is not easy! Just need someone that's been able to build a program, preferably at more than one stop. I really liked Indiana's hiring of Curt Cignetti, what I don't like is his age. think he's in his 60s. Like someone that's a little younger.

My no list is more definitive:
Brian Kelly
Lincoln Riley
Urban Meyer
Matt Campbell
PJ Fleck

Look every year there's Jonathan Smith that most people have never heard of that comes out of no where. And that's Jonathan and not John L!...lol Up until last year, I never heard of Smith, yet he was able to win in Corvallis and that's not easy!

I'd have to look back at the games, but how many of those blown 3rd down coverages did Winky blitzed on. I've seen about as much as need to see of Makari Paige. It drives me nuts that he lets up before he gets to the ball carrier. Against Washington, they blitzed him and you could see him slow up prior to getting to Will Rogers. He's just not an effective blitzer. Early in the season he had the QB in his sights and he whiffed and it resulted in a big play. Berry and Hill are not "on an island" CB. You put them in single coverage, no safety help, they're probably getting burned.

Chowman said...

GBB: you get his feet wet and his first game action isn't when he's a new starter, assuming he's the guy. If he balls out, then maybe you got something if not, you gotta hit the portal hard as hell. I'm just not into letting a guy just ride the bench without ever seeing him play. In a normal year, with a decent depth chart, sure sit him, red shirt him and see him in the spring next year.

I'm right there with you on winning. I have no interest seeing a mediocre team play. I'm not a Minnesota fan. 8-4 doesn't cut it, sorry. Not for me. So yeah, if they going to screw around and not take NIL/TP serious, then I'll find other things to do with my Saturday afternoons. I did that for years with the Lions. I won't watch rat ass football.

Chowman said...

GBB: you can't keep a guy cause you're afraid you won't find the right guy for his replacement. Operating your program from a position of fear is a recipe for losing! That's why Warde gets a pay check. If he can't go out and get an above average football coach, then he needs to go too! I was shocked as hell he got Dusty May so maybe there's some hope. Put it this way: When it was obvious that the school was going to fire Brady Hoke, did anyone believe Jim Harbaugh was going to be there? There are always guys that'll be out there. Michigan is a prestigious school with a huge alumni base, i.e. lots of money. Now we'll have to stop being wankers when it comes to NIL and jump in with both feet. If that's something the school doesn't want to do, then I'm out and I'll just watch the best match ups of the day. Bottom line: if Warde's doing his job, backdoor feelers are already being send out.

Chowman said...

OK guys: I hate the old lame ass retort: who we going to get if we fire so and so. Who cares! If the current coach is substandard, you going keep him cause you're afraid to find a new coach? This is Michigan. Hoke turned that into a meme, but you'd be surprised how many guys would walk to AA to wear the block M. It is a prestigious institution, with a HUGE alumni and fan base. why is that important? $$$$$$$$$$ So its time for Warde to get off his ass and act like he's an AD at one of the top Universities for college football in the country and not still at UConn!

Chowman said...

oh boy another bad look! Chris Bryant telling Washington fans to "chill the fck out or you'll get fcked up". Not a good look man. Fans are going to chirp, as long as they aren't throwing shit, you just need to ignore them.

Chowman said...

Robert Saleh is available and Michigan doesn't have Aaron Rodgers on their roster. Very least can we buy out Wink and hire Saleh? The Jets D was good, their offense was just offensive!

I hope John harbaugh gets fired from Baltimore and comes to Michigan

If you think this year is bad wait till next year when half the defense jumps to the NFL. Because what we have out there now is the best we got so the backups can't be all that. It's going to get worse before it gets better. Put a new quarterback in there with what we got coming back doesn't bode well for him or us. I also believe Moore isn't going anywhere this year and probably next. Wink will probably go before he does. He'll be the scapegoat. However I do agree with putting Jayden in there just to see what the hell would happen..

Szanreno: You're scaring me, I was hoping this was a one-off year deal ... did not think about defense ..... "Sleepless in Seattle".
